View Full Version : Some Ultimates Artwork I've done...
The Foreigner

Just finished this one up. Not my best work, but fun to work on as I've never drawn The Ultimates before. I was also experiementing with some new stylistic techniques.
Once I think something looks great, it's always after I ink it when I start noticing problems. Lot's of little anatomy and perspective issues in places (Not to mention the impossible task of capturing Hitch's Iron Man design! I gave up on recreating all of his details and just used the basic design); but practice makes perfect, right?
Anyhoo, I liked the way it turned out and thought I'd share it. I'd love to hear what you think; constructive criticism is always welcome. And if anyone wants to take a crack at coloring it, go for it! Thanks for looking.

Overall it looks great. Hulks forearms/hands seem to go at an impossible angle and the same with Hawkeyes arms/how he is holding the bow. Also Hawkeyes neck is a little long. Thor Iron-man and Cap look absolutely wonderful. The best bit though is how it is the same characters but in a different style, i.e. you haven't just aped Hitch.

You forgot Wasp! Nice drawing though. I can tell you definitely spent some time on it. Like Dingo said though, touch-ups here and there. Wonderful work. Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments!
The Hulk is definately my least favorite element of the image (Partially because his nude, bulging muscles are hard to capture realistically, and partially because he's leaping towards you even though the other characters are standing calmly-- it's like the image is taken about 0.4 seconds before Hulk smashes right past Cap and Hawkeye. I also wish I had made him bigger!)-- which is unfortunate, because he's the center focus of the image. I also wanted Hawkeye to have a leaner build than Cap and Thor, but I would agree that I may have exagerated his proportions a bit too much. I also went through about six different poses with his arms, and I'm still not happy with the way he's holding the bow.
And although I'm glad with the way Iron Man came out, the hardest part is getting the angles of each piece, which was damn tough; I think my mistakes are most noticeable on the forearm which is raised and facing us. I'm amazed Hitch can nail that nail that thing perfectly in every panel!
Anyhoo, I've been doing some other sketches, but in a few weeks I'll probably draw another group image which includes Quicksilver, Wanda, Fury, and Hank as well, and try and focus more on some of the problems I made with this image.
I'd love to hear some more critiques. :)

Reminds me of Steve Dillon's art, which is a plus in my book. Great!

I knew it reminded me of somebody's art but I couldn't figure it out. You're right, it's kinda like Dillon's work.
Anyway, it looks quite cool, it's Hawkeye who doesn't look like Hawkeye at all but one of those African people with rings on their necks... and the arm position looks weird. The Hulk is a little off as well.
But hey, Captain America and Thor are excellent! You did a great work with both of them. The Wasp's okay too, but I've never cared about her no matter who draws her... And Iron Man's good too, just a little failure in the arm, but overall quite good. Some more practice and you'll nail it. :)
I'd love to see Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch!

Thanks for the comments everyone! They're definitely helpful in fishing out some of the kinks in my work. I'd also say some of my artistic inspiration comes from Frank Quitely, Mike Mignola, Leinil Francis Yu, Frank Miller, Mark Bagley and Steve Dillon.
I'll actually point out that my least favorite element of Hawkeye is actually not the arms or the neck-- It's his groin! I could never quite get the leg positioning right, and there's something definitely off. Ah well-- Bring on some more critiques!

to be brutally honest, which is required for improvement, work on the necks, they seem a little long, something seems odd about hawkeyes.. eyes. Or just the eyes in general.
Good picture.
Ironman looks sick though. and good bodies.
oh another thing too many lines on the naked skin of the characters, know what I mean, almost looks rinkled?
Thor's eyes look good, I don't know waht it is but Hawkeye and Cap's eyes just look off to me. I don't think it is their faces, its their eyes.

I wouldn't change too much, man. You have a cool and unique style that shouldn't be radically altered.

Iron Man and Wasp are the only two I like. There's something off in the faces, but that's been said. And Hawkeye, from face to posture to proportion, looks all wrong. My main problem with the other three was the way all of the lines are going the same direction and maybe that skin even has lines that aren't flowing from the arm, like in a sketchy kind of way.
Is there some reason Cap doesn't have a shield?

My response seems to have vanished. I posted earlier, that I liked the illustration. It shows a blend of Quitley & Crumb, which I find very interesting.

Nah, Ontir, there's actually two threads for some odd reason.
