I'm looking for a book that collects superman comics from the 60's. From what I've seen the superman archive books only go up to the 40's, but I could be wrong. Anyone know of any good books from that era?

If you don't mind black and white, the two Showcase: Superman volumes should be right up your alley. I highly recommend them.

I heartily second that.

If you want Supes comics from the 60's you should get The Man Of Tomorrow Archives series. They're beautiful hardcovers and in color.

I believe these are the identical stories in B&W and paperback, in a much more economical package. It's shot from the original art so the B&W reproduction is excellent.

This is easy. Get the Superman in the 60s tradepaperback that was released five or six years ago. It's a selection of stories from 1960-69. This is exactly what you want.

Wow, thanks a lot. I'm more of a marvel fan so I don't know much about superman. I hear DC is better at collecting their old comics though.

Well, they certainly do a more quality job reprinting some of the old stuff than Marvel does. Showcase is essentially DC's answer to Essentials and I see a big difference in quality. Some of the Essentials volumes appear to be photographed from the color printed editions and have a very muddy look. The Showcase volumes are done from original art (I understand) and are fine line drawings that have been inked but not colored.

Btw, when I said that the Showcase volumes covered the same material as the Archives volumes, that isn't quite right. One Showcase volume covers the same number of stories as two Archives volumes. So take your pick, $100 to get them in color, or $16.95 to get them in quality B&W. For me it's a no-brainer.

For a one volume "best of" rather than a complete collection, this would certainly be a good option.
