CHALLENGE 6: CBR FASHION WEEK
Good morning, designers! Welcome to the Runway. The hard part has just begun.
Your challenge for CBR Fashion Week is to design a five-piece line for the Mighty Avengers: Wasp, Giant-Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch. Each piece of your line should reflect the individualitiy of the character for whom you are designing, however the entire line should show a definite cohesion, clearly showing these characters as part of a team.
CBR Fashion Week Submission Requirements
Each character design should be submitted separately -- no group shots.
Artwork may be done in any medium but should be in color. In other words, if you submit a black-and-white drawing the costume must be black and white.
Each piece of artwork may be no larger than 550-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your post, as opposed to attached, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a brief description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc.
You have only twelve days, through Midnight PDT of Sunday, August 27, to post your five designs within this thread. Failure to fully complete this challenge will result in immediate elimination from CBR Project Runway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.
Post any questions, comments, or concerns about this challenge in this thread, however please do not comment on submissions until the voting thread is posted on Monday, August 28.
Designers, make it work!

Can we submit individual illustrations and in addition add a group shot? I was thinking that might show the throughline that ties the designs together.

Good luck, guys.Based on what's been submitted so far during CBRunway I think some of the finalists might have a problem with attempting to submit polished artwork, as opposed to dealing with the time constraints and submitting passsable designs. I'm excited to see all of the redesigns myself.

Good choice on toning down the number of characters in the entry (though I wanted to see redesigned Captain America. Ah well, maybe next season?) I'm most interested in the redesigns for Thor and Hawkeye this round.

You know what Project CBRunway lacks that Project Runway has? The little cutaway interviews when the designers talk about how everything seems to be falling apart around them and their designs have taken on a life of their own and are evil and want to destroy the world.
Just sayin'.

My Scarlet Witch and Wasp designs are drawn and just need scanning and coloring. I finalized my Giant Man look this morning so I'll be drawing that one tonight. I decided against the paisley suit for Hawkeye, so I'll be redoing that one tonight and doing the drawing tomorrow morning before work.
Thor is proving somewhat difficult- but I've got three or four ideas I'm kicking around.
And I still want to do a group shot, but that may fall by the wayside. Depends on how Thursday night goes.

I very nearly added a sixth required design, a wildcard Avenger, yesterday. But figured I'd be very hated for it. That said, designers can feel free to add an extra redesign of any Avenger of their choosing. It's optional and can be used to strengthen their line.

I haven't started yet. I had drama this week.
<drama>I got mugged (kind of) at a Living End concert (took $200 of my birthday money and my brand new moto razr and a bunch of other stuffs) and then I got a flat tire on the freeway and then I got into a fight with my friend and then and then and then... *hyperventilates*
And now I cant even draw on saturday like I was planning cuz my dumb cousin had to go and get engaged and be all happy and stuff and now we are throwing a dumb party for her. </drama>
So I only have friday to do this. I've been thinking about my designs a lot though.

I'm a wimp when it comes to handling real-life situations.
I'll still enter even if it looks like poo. Nobody is gonna vote for me anyway cuz Fabian is not having much luck getting online and my other friend is not speaking to me. They were my sure-things. ;_;

Yeah thanks, I'm fine. The REST of the concert was fun as hell. I just really didn't think such a freak-ass-crazy-kick-you-in-the-face mosh pit would break out at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney! The HOB in L.A. kicks you out if you so much as bump someone too hard.
I was still a dope for bringing all that cash though.
But some people are so mean! I called my cell after the show to beg for my stuff back and this dude goes "Haha! We stole your phone bitch!" and hangs up on me. Drunk or not, that's just mean.
But but but, they were taping the show that night for their tour DVD so I'mma buy it and watch it so I can track the bastards down! It's a long-shot but I am very bitter about this.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present my 2006 Avengers Collection.
The challenge as stated was to create a five-piece line for the Avengers featuring the characters Hawkeye, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Giant Man, and Wasp. Each costume was to reflect not only the character but also their unity as a team.
Before I present the designs I'd like to talk a little bit about what I was going for in this collection.
Team unity was the first aspect of the challenge that I deliberated. I quickly decided against belts or jackets. I wanted something a little subtler. What I decided on was this:
Each Avenger should have a costume that mixes black with one other color. Colors should not be repeated. I chose Red, Purple, Yellow, Blue and Green. I definitely didn't want any orange. The only two colors I felt were locked in were Red for the Scarlet Witch and Purple for Hawkeye. I made my decision on the other colors with what I felt worked best with each costume or with each personality.
There should be an element of assymetry to each costume.
As much as possible, each costume should reflect the same design sense- even when playing homage to other design styles.
Having decided on how I wanted to show team unity I had to find my way into the team. It was an interesting grouping of characters. I tried various and sundry schemes to form them into a team, but none of them really excited me. And then, a weird moment of synchronicity! I was processing holds at work and someone had requested the Fight CLub DVD. I was looking at the insert book and I saw a pciture of Brad Pitt leaning on a counter and BAM! I had my way in. When I present the designs I'll explain how I see the character as part of my team.
Once I started designing I realized I wanted to not only design a collection, I also wanted to homage some of the design styles that have influenced me over the years. I'll also be explaining my influences as I go along.
Matt offered us the chance to have a sixth Avenger as a wild card. I opted not to add a sixth Avenger. I started to try last night, but the stuff I was coming up with didn't add anything to the Collection.
I'd just like to thank everyone who voted for me in the Challenges so far. I am totally thrilled to be part of the Final Three and I had a ton of fun coming up with this stuff!

Hawkeye
Hawkeye is the leader and driving force of my team. His recent experiences during the Disassembled storyline and the House of M storyline have burnt him out. After taking off from the Avengers, Clint scraped around doing some mercenary work. A chance encounter with Thor in a bar- and about eight hours of discussion on what it means to be a warrior and an Avenger- inspired Hawkeye to for his own team of Avengers.
Hawkeye doesn't have a costume as much as he has a distinctive personal style. I wanted to reflect his frustration with the traditional superhero life while still retaining his familiar purple theme. I decided on an assymetrical shirt in black and purple pattern and purple pants. I wanted the design to be sleek, but also playful and sexy. He's pretty much completely influenced by Brad Pitt in Fight Club.
With this design I wanted to use a more fluid, animated style. The lines are simple and a little playful. I've really been influenced by the design style of certain manga artists and I wanted to give a little wink to that.
I actually gave some thought to the backgrounds as well. But I'll explain that in full when we get to the Wasp.
There WAS a bowstring in the original drawing. It disappeared somehow in the coloring process and I couldn't get it back without messing up four other things. So please pretend it is a really thin bowstring designed by Reed Richards or something. :)

Thor
Thor was surprised to find Hawkeye in a somewhat seedy bar. He listened to Hawkeye's tale of woe and, quite frankly, didn't have a lot of sympathy. Thor is a Warrior God. Warrior Gods know there is always good and bad in being a warrior and they accept it and revel in it. Thor spent the last several months traveling around Scandanavia. He wanted to get back in touch with the people who used to worship him. He drank, partied and brawled his way around several countries. He fell in with some death metal afficianados and cut his hair and grew a beard. He wined and dined more women than he can remember. He even had a somewhat interesting night with Hela. Thor has really been God-ding it up. But that changed when he discovered a Thor cult that was practicing a form of murder sacrifice. Thor had to decide between the ways of old and the morality of today. Once he dispatched the cult he headed back to the States to see what was going on. Running into Hawkeye was a happy coincidence. When Hawkeye asked Thor to join his new Avengers, Thor was only too happy to join. He brings a long-term persepctive and a warrior's zeal to the team.
I call Thor's costume my Heavy Metal Kirby design. All black with blue Kirby-esque design patterns. The collar is assymetrical and, even though it doesn't look like it from this angle, so is the shirt. I think this costume reflects where I'd like to see Thor go- serious warrior with a sense of fun.
This was my favorite design to do. I laughed out loud a couple of times while drawing it. It has so much energy for me and is so fun!

http://alyxchance.com/cbrfinal/giantmanfinal.jpg
Giant Man
When Thor and Hawkeye were looking for new members they debated Hank Pym. He wasn't their first choice, but most of their first choices were deeply involved in other things. They went to see Hank and ask him if he wanted to join as Yellowjacket. Pym insisted that, if he were to join, he wanted to join as Giant Man. Thor and Hawkeye reluctantly agreed, but they're keeping their eye on the somewhat unstable Pym.
Hank Pym, to me, has always been the guy who tries hard but somehow always messes up. He never seems to quite fit. I think he's very eager, but that his passions get the best of him. He's once again looking to prove himself, and, as always, he's sure that this time he'll get it right.
The color I chose for Hank was green- the color of envy. I think there's a lot of envy in Hank, a lot of longing to be more like the heroes around him.
With his costume I wanted to pay homage to Keith Giffen's early 80s design sense. Hence the bodysuit with cutaway bits and the like. I wanted the costume to visually represent Giant Man's powers. It's a long design, and the areas of skin give it a feel of being pulled apart by Hank's expansion. I wanted the green to have a heavy, metallic feel.
Edited to add: One of the things I was trying for in this design was to represent the problem Hank has fitting in with the other Avengers. He tries hard, but he's always a bit out of step. So with his costume I wanted that feeling of trying hard but not quite fitting in. It's not supposed to be the best design of the bunch. It's supposed to show how far Hank has to go to reach the state he wants to be. But it's also very gung ho, very daring. So you've got Hank's eagerness and his awkwardness all in one.
This was the design I had the most trouble with. I went through nearly 10 versions of it before I hit on the final design.

http://alyxchance.com/cbrfinal/waspfinal.jpg
Wasp
When Jan found out that Hank was part of Hawkeye's Avengers she was eager to join as well. She'd become somewhat bored with the things she'd been doing and wanted to do some adventuring again. She also wanted to keep an eye on Hank and make sure he didn't fly off the deep end...again.
With the Wasp I wanted to design a costume reminiscent of 80s fashion. The dress/tunic has a kinda Japanese feel. I added the black cloth to bring out the assymetrical design I wanted all the looks to have. The leggings have a Keith Haring-esque patterning on them. I think this design captures the fashionista stylings of the Wasp.
I said I was going to talk about the backgrounds, didn't I? The backgrounds were all made using the Clouds filter in photoshop. I really like the look of it and I think it makes for a fun background. With the other four designs I used black adn the dominant color of the design. This led to darker backgrounds- which fit with the characters. With the Wasp I broke from that. I wanted a lighter feel to the Wasp. She's a much more well-adjusted character and has a purer joy for life than the others. So her costume was bright yellow and her background is the lovely blue and white of a nice spring day.

http://alyxchance.com/cbrfinal/scarletwitchfinal.jpg
The Scarlet Witch
The only problem I had with Wanda was getting her on the team. She's off playing Gypsy in Europe and supposedly doesn't have any powers. But she's got to have kept something- if only to protect her simple Gypsy life from the perils of the real world. Eventually, however, there will be some threat that will force her to take up her powers and her identity again. I'll call that threat Loki.
Wanda is the teammate that nobody trusts. She could go nuts at any moment and wipe them all out. But they'll take the chance to keep an eye on her.
The Scarlet Witch design was the first I did. I knew what I didn't want- I didn't want Stevie Nicks Wanda. No Gypsy bangles and spangles and hoops and baubles. I could have gone that way. God knows I've drawn stuff like that before. But I didn't want that look. I wanted something sleek and simple. I wanted something that looked a little sinister but very sexy without being revealing. Wanda is constantly bruised by the world. She's going to want as much between her and the world as she can get. So I went with more of a Byrne design than a Perez design.
Black and red were the obvious combination. And I am one for not resisting the obvious without reason. I wanted a red jacket over a black bodysuit. All I had to do was find the right design for the jacket. And a moment of pure accident came up with the cut of the jacket. My pencil slipped and the jacket fastened under her boob instead of in the center of the jacket. And that opened up everything. I had my design scheme all at once.
This was the easiest of the designs for me. And it's the design that is most like what was in my head. I love the red and black and I love the flow of the jacket.

Atoning, I like what you're going for, and the art is slamming. You did manage to capture a team unity feel to the designs. I like the choice of going with different colors for each member. I had actually thought about doing that myself had I made it through.
Now personally I prefer my classic superheroes in superhero costumes, but that aside most of these are cool designs with a retro feel modernized. There were a couple I wasn't crazy about. Here's my thoughts on each.
Hawkeye - I always thought of Hawkeye as a down to earth guy with a temper and an ego. So in one sense I can see how this outfit plays into that. On the other hand, it seems a little too flashy for Clint, if not a little feminine.
Thor - Not really crazy about the backstory, but the beard I like. He doesn't exude that sense of power though that Thor is known for. He's lost a bit of the noble superhero persona here. But I do like the lines in the costume and the fact that you kept some of the original elements such as the shape of the boots and the discs on the shirt.
Giant Man - If Hawkeye's outfit looked a bit feminine, Hank is downright cross-dressing. I think you've unlocked a fourth persona in the Pym schizophrenia. That said, this is the only one of your designs I just plain don't like.
Wasp - While I'm still not crazy about the whole motif, this to me harkens back to classic Jan and captures her spirit and personality, so points for that.
Scarlet Witch - This is my favorite of your designs. It's classy, chic, simple and has a mod flare to it. Not sure about the coat and gloves meshing together, and it seems to be missing some small detail, though I can't place it, but overall very nicely done.
And that's my take on it. Can't wait to see the others.

Thanks for your comments, Gonz.
The missing element in the Scarlet Witch design might be the headdress. I tried a few different designs with different headdresses, but it came down to having the collar or the headdress and I liked the collar better.
I figured that some people would find the Hawkeye and Gaint Man designs a bit too gay, but I went for them anyway. I wasn't under any illusions about winning this contest and I wanted to design stuff that made me smile. Which isn't to say that I didn't take this seriously- I took it WAY seriously. I just figured I might as well have some fun too.
I hope you play along in the other thread. I'd love to see your takes on these characters!

So that's my Collection. It was a lot of fun to do. I think it's the best work I've done in this competition and I hope you all enjoy it.
I've loved your designs during this contest. I have a bit of time, so I'll comment this time:
As a team: I like the overall idea it (and I can see why you were glad that you didn't need to draw Captain America). The theme has a bit of a Power Rangers-feel to it with the colour-coding, but that seems to be working for them, but each design is individual enough to make it work.
Individuals: I agree with Gonzogoose that the Scarlet Witch is the best of the designs (it reminds me a bit of Doctor Strange in his coat-period), but I also like the Wasp a lot. Thor is a very strong design without going for the Viking-wargear again, so bonus points for that. Hawkeye works as a design, but I have no special feelings for or against it. And I have to agree with Gonzogoose again that Giant-Man is the weakest of the designs and I have never associated the colour green with Hank, while the others are all using colours that either fit the character's name (Wanda and Wasp) or history (Thor and Hawkeye), but personally I always felt that Giant-Man was the weakest of Hank Pym's various incarnations, so it may be bias.
Overall a strong entry and I'm anxiously awaiting the other participant's designs.

Unfinished Hawkeye dude says: I'm ugly!
Due to the ugliness of my last minute attempts to do SOMETHING for this contest, I'm officially out. I tried guys, but what I had was not my best- not even close. And it'd be insulting to the rest of you to just toss scribbles up here. Plus I have the worstestest headachey in the world.
So yeah. I colored some of Hawkeye and was like... "Uhh... I am not spending the next five hours coloring if each picture is gonna be THIS bad."
Just for the sake of sharing: All my guys had a primary or secondary color with black trim/designs that represented them as well as a black mask of some sort with an "A" going over the left eye. That's all I had. And drawing without references, sleep, or a light source other than my monitor pretty much mangled any attempt at "human" anatomy.
Sorry for bailing like this, but trust me when I say you aint missing much.

Aww, okie, that's so depressing to hear. I was totally looking forward to everyone's designs, as the challenge is one spectacular one.
That Hawkeye peice is gorgeous enough! And what you have written, with the symbols and eye peices, I'm really digging what could possibly be something pretty hot! You put a lot of effort into it already, I can tell, and you're very strong for not pouting and crying about the mugging (which was very unfortunate indeed). You sketched them, I bet! You have a day left! If you find a moment please, I beg you, finish it! I totally want to see them, and I'm sure I speak for everyone!
I know you're not just dropping out of lazyness, you must really be bugged and depleted from what it sounds like, but if you ever get a moment today, do try and finish up! You've got fans, babe. Make us proud ;)

And I wasn't strong at all about the incident! I cried! But some of it was made much better when I found a boy who had lost his shoe in the pit. He was cute, and when a huge fat sweaty guy wouldn't stop dry humping me and grabbing my boobs, the shoeless boy pushed him offa me (my hero!)
But stupid shoeless boy had a stupid girlfriend who found him after the stupid show and leapt all over him with stupid worry.
*grumbles*
On the off chance that anyone out there really does enjoy some of my art, then maybe they'd be kind enough to support me in the Bows and Arrows contest which I am really excited about. :D
And um... I know it's hideous but here's my dA page since some of you have asked so nicely: http://yummykitty.deviantart.com/

You know what? You are very nice to me and I don't know why.
But you are super nice to ALL the artists. You seem like you'd be all tough and mean and scary but I've never heard you say anything but encouraging words to anyone. >_>
So I think you're just too nice to admit when you think art is ug.
I'll uh... I'll see what happens tomorrow. But at the very least I can post some of my concept sketches for the heck of it maybe.

Shut the hell up, Okie! I love all of those (especially the Shakira one!) in your DevArt!
Lol and poor stupid shoeless boy. He'd be better off with you (and your pencils), anyway. And that huge dry humping guy sounds scary.

Okie,
Yes, he is nice, but he's also a good critic and giver of advice. AND I have never seen Howy say PLEASE (stretched out even) here on the boards. He really loves your art.
You have a mass of talent...at age 20!!!! This is the final round and I know all of your fans (myself included) want to see the rest of your designs.

Technically there's only 6.5 hours left, but given that I won't post the voting thread until I get into work tomorrow I'm sure the remaining finalists will be fine if they can sneak their designs in before, oh say, 9AM EDT?

Hey- i finally finished!! (i had a bit of a late start..)
Anyways, i don't have much to say about this line. I thought about other teams i know with "team costumes", and groups like The X-men, Fantastic Four, Doom Patrol, etc. came to mind. I thought most of these groups were rockin' the two-color thing, and so i decided to give the Avengers a two-color motif. Most of these characters have had costumes that were prodominantly blue/black, or red/red-ish color... :o .... so that's what i went with. I also thought about the "modern" style team uniform- like The Ultimate Groups, The X-Men movie,.. and how they're less super-hero-y, and more street clothes-ish. So i decided to go for the look of certain fabrics and designs with the line.
And my little "Avengers" nod, is that on each costume, the bottom half of a capital "A" is seen making up the neckline of the suit, with the top half wrapping around to the back/back of the neck. In Hawkeye and Wanda's cases, the tip stretches ALL the way down to make a cape/loin-cloth/coat thingy.
I guess that's it- i tried to use this formula on each character, but to incorporate elements from their traditional costumes.
Here they are!

And lastly, here's a group shot.

I was going to include a sixth, and i was debating between Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man... but to be honest, i'm just plain tired.
This whole contest was a blast to do! I'm really glad it got off the ground and retained its popularity. :D
EDIT: (Holy crap, that group shot is small! Wow.)

If we tell Okie that we are locked in a case with only three more hours of air, will she post her artwork? (Looking to the Emmys for inspiration...)

Wait for Okie, Matt!!I've stressed over the past two hours deciding whether to wait for her or not, but I've ultimately decided to stick by the "no extension, no exceptions" rule that's been in place from the beginning. I did this for several reasons, but here are the main two.
1) The time constraints were supposed to be real during this contest. It sucks what's happened to Okie this past week, but in real life (and in other contests) deadlines would not be ignored because of personal or uncontrollable issues.
2) There's no way of knowing when, or even if, she'd actually submit her line. I decided that's ultimately unfair to Chad and Dan.
Again, I agree it sucks...she could easily have won Project CBRunway.

Guys, waiting for me would have been a mistake since I didn't finish.
It just would have been more unfair to Veggie and Atoning. Besides, with what I'm seeing here, no. I had no shot at winning.
What I think I'll be doing is working on becoming a better artist within time constraints ( gotta meet deadlines and be consistent if I wanna make it in the business) and a stronger person in general, and then I will re-enter next year and see if I can hold my own without the pity-votes and exceptions and stuff.
But this WAS a super fun contest... I made so many friendsies *cheesy awkward group hug*
