Ive noticed this title at my book shops, and while Im not much of a Hulk fan, the art has been very impressive. Also, reading the NA: Illuminati book and finding out why Hulk is in space also interested me.
I noticed that there are different story arcs within the Planet Hulk series, so Im a little confused as to where to begin. Can you give me a heads up.
Or should I wait for the TPB?

The prelude is good and worth reading eventually but the only point you need to start at is exile begining with issue 92, not available in trade so check ebay for back issues

the Planet Hulk series is seperate from the regular Hulk series, right? Ive noticed that some books are number #1 or #4.
(forgive my ignorance in this matter)

Didn't it start with a new arc? Or did I missed that? I think Hulk is planning to take over the planet now.

eeek, now I'm confused.
Okay, so the Planet Hulk arc is 14 issues long, what is the current issue that is out?

Ok, there are 5 parts
prelude
issues 88-91 (not sure on numbers their either all right or all wrong:D)
exile
issues 92-95 + giant size incredible hulk (this may be the number 1 you saw)
anarchy
issues 96-99 and some guidebook thing I didn't bother with
Allegiance
issues 100-103
armageddon
issues 104-105
we are currently on issue 97 so it's still early doors yet but get in now because it's really starting to pick up speed and looks like being the best hulk arc in years!

Thanks Hippy Fascist, that clears it up some.
I think I'll start with the Exile story arc. The titles of the story arcs you posted are much more helpfull than the numbering thing.
Thanks again.

that's where I started the arc (don't normally read it but this looked to good to miss) then got the prelude trade on import on account of it's relevance to civil war as well. It's a great story so far! Enjoy

Even though Hippy Fascist didn't bother with the Guidebook, I'd highly recommend it.
It's basically all new material on Hulk's allies and Sakaar -- and it's really enhanced my enjoyment of the story, even the back issues which I already read prior to the Guidebook's release. I don't think you can be a true Planet Hulk fan without it.

I may check it out if I can still find it, I thought it was just a collection of sketches etc :(

Nope -- maps, detailed character histories (even on characters who have yet to appear in the actual storyline), and even an entire planet history (from the rise of sentient life to the formation of the Empire by the Red King's father).

I wanna start reading Planet Hulk, because I have a feeling that when he comes back to Earth, Iron Man and crew will have alot to answer for, if not most of the hero teams.

what no-one seems to be talking about is how the sentry will react when he finds out...

I'm gonna probaly gonna get this when it comes in Hardcover form and when I'm not blowing my money into Civil War and Civil War tie ins.
If you want a little depth, pick up the Illuminati one-shot, too. That shows the machinations of the group that launched Hulk into space to begin with.
I think it was just reprinted so you should be able to find a copy at your local LCS for the cover price of $3.99.
And my two cents: this is the best Hulk story I've read in many, many years. Worth picking up now rather than waiting for trade(s).
