I would pick Triathlon for this, but since I have another story idea involving him I will pick the characters I recommend for The Champions:
Hellcat (co-leader)
Justice (co-leader)
Talisman
Living Lightning
Darkhawk
Texas Twister
J. Robb

I'd make the Champions an international team, based in Wakanda:
Storm
Black Panther
Hercules
Darkstar (I think she's dead, but she could get better...)
Sabra
The Real Rogue

Arachne
Dragonfly

Iron Fist
African team:
Storm (leader)
Black Panther (leader)
Cloak

THE CHAMPIONS [a team of easily-blackmailed or already detained heroes organized by S.H.I.E.L.D]
1. Nighthawk [Kyle Richmond] -- field leader
http://www.marvel.com/universe3zx/images/6/63/Nighthawk.jpg
note: he seems to play the role of patsy well but maybe SHIELD would be in for a surprise on this occassion. anyways, he was chosen because of his experience and resources i.e. a headquarters to set these folks up in.
2.
3. Omega ["James-Michael Starling"]
http://www.newsarama.com/JoeFridays/JF51art/OMEG002coverSMALL.jpg
note: i've never even read a Omega the Unknown appearance but i like his look & powerset. for the purposes of the Champions team i'm thinking of him as a mix of Billy Batson-SHAZAM and Donnie Darko. he'd be an individual who appears out of nowhere and has a lot to hide. SHIELD would take full advantage of this & the fragile state of Omega's human form.
4. Ultra-Girl [Sue Sherman]
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/UltraGirl.JPG
note: she'd get a new costume (maybe something light blue), maybe. anyways, i like her powerset and kree heritage. i figure SHIELD would use her alien origins and connection to the New Warriors to blackmail her.
5. Ant-Man [Eric O'Grady]
http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/data/media/359/ANTMAN001.jpg
note: "He's not going to help you or save you unless he thinks he can get something from you… some money or maybe your hot sister," --Kirkman/ so i figure that SHIELD will just make him an offer or point out that he stole the costume from them.
6. Freedom Ring [Curtis Doyle]
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/89/Freedomring.png
note: i'm using the newer characters because they are more malleable. in Doyle's case SHIELD could make the argument that the cosmic cube ring he uses was SHIELD property, until Captain America lost it. they could threaten the character's friends. or maybe take the nice approach and appeal to his strong sense of heroism. what's cool about Freedom Ring is that he's gay & one of the most powerful on the team. that's new.
i need another female hero for the #2 spot. most of the decent ones are already taken, so she might have to be brand new character. in case you hadn't noticed, the team is made up of JLA-analogs. Nighthawk (Batman), Ultra-Girl (Wonderwoman), Freedom Ring (Green Lantern), Omega the Unknown (Superman), and Ant-Man (the Atom). i could use a speedster or another flier.
Giant Guy

Wonderman

Hercules
Goliath (Bill Foster)

2.Nova
3.Firestar
4.Puma
5.Triathlon
6.Doc Samson
7.Queen Divine Justice
8.Valkyrie( who would be Danielle Moonstar)
9.And a new Hero

Mighty Avengers(w/Iron Man): the greatest heroes
New Avengers(w/Cap): the outcasts a la Robin Hood.
Heroes for Hire: the street-based guns for hire, hunting heroes.
Thunderbolts(w/Zemo): villains working everybody
So with that in mind my Champions would be beyond such things as "heroes` Civil Wars" and so forth. They would be the Gods of Marvel like JLA, but more pompus and above all:
>>The Champions<<
Hercules -- Olympian Demi-God
Archangel -- Billionaire, genuine flesh & blood graceful angel
Black Widow -- descendant of Tzars
Royal Couple Black Panther & Storm
Quick Silver -- rebelious prince of legacy
Taking the available former Champions first and adding BP and Storm for more royalty, adding Silver as the bitter(but much needed) prince creats a sort of JLA analogs wheras Hercules is Superman, Angel is Hawkman, Widow is Black Canary, Panther is Batman, Storm is Wonder Woman and Quick Silver is Flash. It wasn`t meant to be that way, but it makes sens.
Powerful but efficient, pompus but powerful as fk, this would be a kickass, dangerous group. More importantly they represent different Universes at Marvel. So more potential for stories. They could even add other people to their group like Black Bolt when they travel to Attilan or Namor when they go to Atlantis. Heck even Longshot when they go to Mojo World(LS could be the rebelious Robin Hood-type so Green Arrow analog). And as far as volatile character to complete the mix you can have Henry Pym joining these guys(for the Atom).

no offense but it doesn't seem like much of a team. why would those characters be in the same country; let-alone working together. it's almost like you just made a list of C and D listers that you like. who is leading? who deprogrammed Madison Jeffries? isn't the 3D Man and Firestar retired? Captain UK's in another dimension, isn't she?

of course Babylon23 is entitle to his/her opinion. i didn't tell him/her that they couldn't post in this thread. i just critiqued the roster. i would love it if someone would actually respond to one of my lineups. instead it's just a bunch of people posting their favorite characters for their own looking pleasure. me, i look at everyone's lineup to find ones that i like and characters i might have missed. i like a few of the characters Babylon used but don't understand how they fit together; that's all. anything can happen in comics. doesn't it mean it should happen. look at how poorly the Secret Defenders title did, for instance.

When did the champions line up ever make any sense? Formula for a Champions team is a dash of Avengers with a pinch of X-Men and a goup of characters that have nothing to do with any of them plus a 1 or 2 foreign representatives.

Ice Man
Arachne

yeah but didn't you read the Joe Fridays column where he pointed to this as the cause of the series failure? :) did you collect Champions, monthly? i sure didn't. it's not wise to treat a book like it's fanfic. it won't sell. if you're making a lineup on here i would just suggest that you make it with the intention of convincing other posters to like it. anyone could make a list of characters they like. not everyone can create a great lineup. that's just my opinion on it.

Sorry it took so long. It's around 2pm here, I'm at work and I just got back from a late lunch.
The Champions was a completely random gathering of characters with little connection to one another. That was the model I was using - completely unconnected characters drawn together for whatever reason. I didn't give them any real structure because the Champions themselves never really had that much to begin with.
The leader and financier would be Nighthawk.
As for how otherdimensional characters could join this team, well, it's a comic book. It's easy to get people into our dimension.
3D Man merged with Triathlon in Avengers. I can think of plenty of ways to bring him back.
As for critiquing your lineup, I just assumed you were joking with your Captain America/Iron Man/Sentry lineup, since it's almost identical to the Bendis NA team. I thought you were making a statement about how Bendis' team is more like the Champions. My mistake.

no, i was purposesly going away from the original concept of the Champions (they had no concept it was just a random assortment of characters). out of curiousity, where is your team based? i ask because the reason i questioned you about Captian UK is that her name comes with certain responsibilities. there's a reason why Captain Britain would make sense as (for example) a california based Avenger. and 3D Man didn't merge with Triathlon. the two former 3D Men were freed by Delroy and retired from adventuring. but if you can think of a way to bring them back, knock yourself out. just seemed random to me.

That's because it was random. Much in keeping with the original Champions concept. I didn't approach this with marketability in mind because I'm not doing a pitch for a new Champions team to Marvel. I took a FUN approach to my thinking, which I thought was the point of the thread.

Okay then, a critique of your team. Firstly, you've listed the New Avengers - Captain America, Iron Man, Sentry, Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel - and thrown in Human Torch and Storm (with, I might add, no reason given). I see no reason for this team to be called the Champions, since they're essentially the New Avengers anyway.
Also, if you're purposely moving away from the Champions concept, why call the team the Champions at all? Especially if all you're going to do is use the New Avengers.

i don't feel that the Avengers do much Avenging. Champions more accurately describes the team, imo. Human Torch is there because he wants to be popular. Storm is there as a show of good faith; Wakanda reaching out to the United States.
Also, if you're purposely moving away from the Champions concept, why call the team the Champions at all? Especially if all you're going to do is use the New Avengers.
i think the original concept is broken. and i already have another team called the Avengers.

You can make a 'Champions' team with anyone you want. Whether it's Nighthawk from Earth-S or Hyperion from the Supremeverse.
I'd have the following:
Dr. Strange
Hulk
Daredevil
Ghost Rider
I like my teams relatively small and intimate. They're all fairly A list characters, and I think the character dynamics mesh well.
