I was going through my collection of Marvel Universe Handbooks and looking over all the info on the Scourge of the Underworld and a question popped into my head.

According to the MU Appendix website, the costume for Scourge was created by John Byrne. I guess this was done to give the character(s) an identifiable costume of some sort. However, if this is the case, then why didn't the powers that be in charge of the deluxe edition Handbook use the outfit Scoruge I wore when he tried to kill Captain America while the latter was disguised has Mirage? It would have made more sense to use an outfit that had already been shown than creating something from scratch. Not only that, but the mask Scrouge I wore as a part of said outfit is used for his headshot in the entry for Scourge's Victims in the book of dead.

Scourge could have been several people working together or several people not working together. There's too many unaswered questions about the Scourge vigilante since in virtually every appearance Scourge appears to be in a completely different appearance each time.

true. But my question here is why the makers of the Deluxe Edition handbook felt they needed to create a costume from scratch when there already an outfit in the comics themselves that could serve as one? Especially in light of the fact that the headshot used for the original Scourge in a later entry has him wearing the mask from said costume.

I will love to read a story arch discussing Scourge finally revealing his or their true origins.... and I would love to see Ed Brubaker helm in the arch in a future addition of Captain America....

It was revealed in Cap #350 that Scourge was actually a group funded by the Red Skull, along with the Watchdogs and the Resistants. Later, in the USAgent miniseries, it was revealed that the organisation was formed by the original Angel, the 40's hero. Angel died in that series, and the Scourges were arrested.

I'd love to see the group return in the current Cap series.

Beats me. But given that Gruenwald was both the main writer on Scourge, and the guy who more than likely comissioned the costume, there was probably a good reason.

the 1940's Angel did not die at the end of the USAgent mini. His aide Domino died when an angel statue fell on him. The Angel was apparently arrested but somehow beat the charges because he later hosted a party for his fellow Golden Age heroes in Captain America #442

You mean this outfit?

Kinda looks (a) a bit generic, and (b) a lot like GI Joe's Snake Eyes (maybe Marvel didn't want their big villain killing rogue looking like the hero of their #1 comic at the time).

Wonder why they just didn't go with the other costume he wore during that arc - black hat, black trenchcoat, and flesh-colored skull-faced mask.

Yep, thats the outfit I'm talking about.

That would have also worked AND it would have addressed the problems Sean just pointed out.
