So... has there been any word on the Dr. Fate who appeared in the preview for Trials of Shazam in Brave New World?

Wasn't that the old Dr. Fate ? The preview corresponded with the destruction of the Rock of Eternity.

On the cover to a later issue of 52 Detective Chimp is holding Dr. Fate's helmet. That leads me to believe that the issue will be resloved in that series.

Hmmm.... what if Detective Chimp became the new Dr. Fate? Would he wear the trench coat and helmet together? One thing's for sure: he'd have to drill a hole in the front of the helmet so he could still smoke. Imagine the Helmet of Fate with a Marlboro Red hanging out of the front.

He cant. The helmet doesnt fit. Thats not a joke, its seriously why he isnt doing it. For more info go get the Day of Vengence trade.

That's true, I forgot that part; I've been denying myself the satisfaction of rereading Countdown To Infinite Crisis until 52 ends. (Day of Vengeance was hands down my favorite part of the Crisis crossovers, I bought it the day it came out.) It's probably just as well, anyway - Dr. Fate should be impressive, regal, and slightly ethereal - not short, hairy, and armed with one-liners and a hangover.
Since the successor to the helm is obviously not our ludicrous primate friend (hence my little joke), who are some likely candidates for the job? Will DC simply write a new character into the role, or are there some established heroes (or even anti-heroes) that might make for an interesting Dr. Fate?
Thoughts?

I think you are correct here.

I think its going to be a completely new guy or gal. Just as well, I never much cared for the old one. The only one I liked was the female one that appeared in one or two issues of JLI. Other than that I dont know much about her.

So do chimps have bigger heads than humans? Or do you need a shrunken head to be able to be Dr. Fate? :p

Who knows? When the rock blew Marvel lost his powers and fell to earth, remembering his word in IC#1.
NOT fighting Yeti in the snow. I didn't care for that BNW issue. I have no idea where to put in continuity. FYI Marvel doesn't have the grey streak in his hair in 52. Although he isn't supposed to be able to leave the rock either, so I JUST DON"T KNOW.....

Wonder how he tracked it down.... Marvel (I think) Threw it to find a random person (chosen by Fate! Gosh I love that idea :) ) Hope they don't forget that part, and I hope its just some new random person. I'll be annoyed if it lands in front of Booster gold or some other random hero or Ex-hero.

I believe Hector Hall passed into the Dreaming in JSA #80, which came out January(ish) 2005- Day of Vengeance wasn't published until June- so I think Dr. Fate had already passed on by the time the Rock was destroyed.

Hector Hall has always been kind of meh for me. I liked Kent Nelson the best.

Yeah, I believe Hector's gone, along with Lyta.
And IIRC, the other Fates (Kent & Enza, Jared Stevens) who were in the amulet were destroyed too at some point around that time...

Everything old is new again ?
It can't be Kent Nelson again , he has passed on to heaven with his wife with the help of the spectre in an issue of fate. The residue spirit of Kent and Inza residing in the amulet are like that of Quasar's quantum bands which still holds the residue spirit of all its welders. Their actual spirits already passed on.
Anyway ,we'll just have to see. The way Hector Hall went down was really weak. He should have continue on as Dr Fate because he was good and he has strong ties with the vertigo world since his son is the lord of dreams.

Reading the wiki entry , never knew that there was a evil earth 1 counterpart of Dr. Fate. Interesting ...

I agree that Hector had a kind of Suck death. I can't believe it actually happened that way.

Dr. Fate's history has been so convoluted since his 80s/90s series. Kent Nelson? I'm on the fence on this one. Since DC has replaced core characters with new people (Spectre, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, etc.), I'd be surprised if DC went back to the beginning. But I'm all for bringing back Dr. Fate: he's one of my favourites!

Wow someone who agrees with me - yes she was my favourite too. I thought the male incarnations of this character were a bit plaid, a bit bland. In my opinion the achetype lends itself to a female character more readily.

Well, unfortunately I cant say that I agree with you wholeheartedly, because like I said I dont know much about her. I just remember enjoying her in a few old issues of JLI and I was surprised because I had really hated the guy who came before her.

It might be possible that if it is Kent Nelson, it's a different person with the same name- like the Jim Corrigan that shot Crispus Allen
