I have recently gotten back into comics and people keep recommending Frank Miller's run of DD, so I picked up the 3 visionaries tbps... I have read the first 5 issues so far and it is fairly by the books(and I guess as could be expected, very old school non complex storytelling). Does it get better?

Well, different strokes. Not sure what issues those TPBs start at, but Miller's "Man Without Fear" is phenomenal. All of the Miller DD Elektra stuff is great. I'd say give it a few more issues.

It started to pick up a little now. Hope it continues to get better!

And I just read on amazon that Frank Miller only drew the comics in this edition, and did not even begin writing til book 2!

Right. Volumes two and three are much better than the first. If you like them, you should try out the current Daredevil run by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark.

Before doing that, it would be a good idea to read the entire Bendis/Maleev run.

I would recommend getting Daredevil now, or rather from a couple of issues back, from the start of Brubaker's run. It's absolutely excellent. Bendis did an amazing job on the title in my opinion, I know some people were less pleased, but even so it did lose something at the end. Brubaker has reinvigorated the book for me. It's a must read.

the Brubaker run is becoming one of my favorites. When said and done it could be up there with Millers for me. Its starts at 82.But the new arc is starting this month.

I also plan to get all of the Bendis run, since I love Bendis so far : ). Miller's run is just the 3 visionaries and then born again right?

Throw in the "Man Without Fear" trade by Miller.

The only Bendis issues I recommend would be the Murdock papers. That is the immediate setup for Devil in Cell block D Which is AWSOME.

Brubaker has been great so far, but he hasn't really shown his chops. He played a great set, but he also had Elvis as a warm up band.

Yes. And THAT'S when it got phenominally good. :)

I didn't read the First Visionaries because Frank Miller wasn't writing it, he was only drawing it

2nd Visionaries is where it gets good because he starts writing it. I didn't read the 3rd but it's supposed to be good too

Then I read next, which is a necessity, Frank Miller's Born Again.

Then... i read ALL of Bendis' DD which is absolutely amazing. And now that Ed Brubaker is starting it now, it's even getting better (which i never thought possible).

If you don't want to read the whole Bendis run, just read the last trade "The Murdock Papers" at least so you know what's going on currently

So if you want to take the short cut, read Visionaries #2, Born Again, Murdock Papers, and current. i suggest not taking the shortcut though ^__^

While Miller's classic Daredevil work has been reprinted in its entirety and is, for many, the only frame of reference for the history of the character, I would point out that in between his runs and throughtout the 1980s, Daredevil remained an excellent comic book.

In particular, the stories written by Denny O'Neil were rich in psychological introspection and strived to show Matt Murdock's need to find redemption from the spiral of violence in his life. Stories such as Daredevil's long, difficult confrontation with Micah Synn, which avoided the common place to cast an unflinching, and yet ultimately merciful, look at the human condition, would be no less challenging and moving for an adult reader than most of Miller's own great work.

Of course, the same can be said of Ann Nocenti's extended run, which focused on Daredevil's own sense of loss and confusion to address the delusions and hang-ups of an entire society.

And that's without even getting into the bronze age...

I haven't read Frank Miller's DD run but Bendis is the best DD writer IMO.

Agreed. There is so much more to DD than just Miller, and now  Bendis.

With Bendis's run I had a hard time identifiying it AS daredevil. He was RARELY in costume. I like the Secret Id's character development too, but they went to an unhealthy extreme. Mostly just Matt hiding in his office from the press, while Luke Cage, Ben Urich, and Dakota do all the stuff.

Didn't really like it.

Really picked up in the end with the Murdock papers though.
