Im just writing now my first ever original piece... nad I wanted to sound out a few concepts.
Im aiming for police procedural, but with deamons. with the detectives going around policing deamon activity and murders and possetions, but more Hellblazer than MiB.
Im not sure if I should be trying to avoid cliches or dive head long into them? I envisange a burned out main character in an underfunded department where all the deamon activity goes through big families (except instead of being mafia italian familys that own half of downtown were talking "my dadies the arch-duke of the sixth circle of hell and owns half of downtown" families.
Hes being doing the job for a long time, near the begining of the story he'll anounce hes pissed of with all you jerks and is going to see his wife (implying hes going home to a normal life). He'll drive to a place in chinatown and speak to a medium who will put him in contact with his wife in hell she died through something to do with his work and he'll feel guilty and want to keep up the relationship, but it was also something to do with an afair she was having so its all nice and bitter-sweet... and eventualy she'll say she dosent want to hear from him any more beacuse she dosent want him wasting his life and it just makes her eternal torment worse....
At this point I was thinking of introducing a new partner (again isnt this all a little too cliche?) who hates deamons (overtones and traditional plot device of racial tensions)...
They have no real magic beyond lines of salt and lucky rabits foots etc.... however knowing a deamons true name immediately gives you the control to banish the deamon etc....
At one point I plan to have the barstad son of the deamon ambasidor choking detective 1 and having him desperately try to correctly pronounce the name of the deamon (due to the secretaries bad penmanship its spelt wrong on his warrent)
Skin trade (new meaning :) )
And other stuff....... Im aiming for shinto / folktale deamons here as opposed to jeudo-christian deamons....
what do you think?
