I am writing this thrtead to find out what people are reading and what people would like to see in comcis in the future: subject matter, characters, and creative teams?
Are there certain subjects that you would like to see dealt with in the future?
(school, drugs, sex, pop culture, music, reality tv, movies etc)
This is my attempt at a focus group deeply rooted in the comic book culture, being as how pop culture such as cartoons, movies and television are deeply rooted in the comic book culture.

My Pull List includes, but is not limited to:
1. Punisher (Max, and soon Punisher War Journal)
2. DMZ (DC Vertigo)
3. Moon Knight (Marvel)
4. Civil War (Marvel and Wolverine civil War tie in)

Please, help me out, let me know what you're reading and why.
Thanks

I have a fairly long pull list. As far as subjects I would like to see tackled, I would like to see homelessness and poverty. What about a superhero response to a natural disaster? (ie. Katrina, Tsunami)

I read what I read because I enjoy the writer/characters/concept. I enjoy books from the big two as well as indepedent companies.

I am so glad you started this thread. I was just about to ask the same question. I've not been reading comics regularly for many, many moons and came back to see what was good.

So far I see some awesome art and computer color applications. Yet I'm not being grabbed by a story or concept. No one is running through the streets saying 'Did you see issue suchnsuch of thisnthat? It's awesome!'

I remember days when dudes would come flying down the street on anything from feet to wheeled vehicles just to blurt out about how Capt. America did this or Batman did that.

So that's why I came back here cause I knew if there was anything great out here it would be hyped on this board.

I don't actually have a pull list, as in one of those little files where my monthly subscribed titles are stowed away for me by the comic shop. I tend to read things in trade paperback format when possible, so my buying habits are a little irregular.

As far as individual issues go, I get Usagi Yojimbo, All-Star Superman, Nextwave, the Escapists, Astonishing X-Men (for the time being), and the TMNT titles (currently TMNT, Tales of the TMNT, and Leonardo: Blind Sight).

For trades, I regularly follow Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, the Losers (which is ending), Scott Pilgrim, the Ultimates (until the end of the current volume), and the Walking Dead. I used to get Ultimate Spider-Man, but fell behind on it about three volumes ago and have yet to catch up.

Other than that, I tend to buy things on a pretty random and casual basis.

I don't have a pull list because, as a rule, I don't follow contemporary comics. The money I spend on comics goes mostly for Essentials and Showcase collections and assorted back issues. When I do find a modern series that interests me, such as DC's Justice, I pick up recent issues at conventions.

Hopefully that won't skew any statistical trends disproportionately.

Let's see, I pull-
DC: Action, Superman, Detective, Batman, All Star Batman, All Star Superman, 52, Birds of Prey, Atom, Justice, Secret Six, Green Arrow, Hawkgirl, and Planetary. I think I'll be adding the new JLofA, Wildcats, Authority, and Gen 13 books as well. I'm on the fence with the new Wonder Woman and JSofA.

Marvel: Ultimates 2, Daredevil, Captain America, Uncanny X-Men, Astonishing X-Men Edit: oh, and Nextwave.

I follow various other stuff in collections, and I snap up most Essential and Showcase Presents books.

I do have a pull list, but it is a tiny one and I can never remember what's on it. Let me think...

All-Star Superman
Desolation Jones
Fell
Nextwave
Seven Soldiers

And it looks like I'll be adding Detective, Batman, Authority, and Wildcats.

Basically I get everything Grant Morrison does, plus a couple Ellis things, and then an odd bit here or there. I'm an elitist.

Incredible Hulk
Young Avengers
Captain America
Daredevil
Ultimates
(the current) Uncanny X-Men
Runaways
Annihilation Mini Event

these are all MUST haves to me... trust me on these titles, i guarantee almost everyone aggrees. the thing is i never cared about the hulk, captain america, daredevil..before but it's the writers i've learned to follow which make me actually like the character. i think following writers is the best way to go, following great writers like Brian K. Vaughn, Ed Brubaker, Mark Millar, etc...

Feel free to PM me if you want more info on where you should start reading in these titles

my favorite vertigo/story type comics:
Walking Dead
DMZ
Y The Last Man
Fables
Exterminators

This is a much bigger response than I anticipated: I was thinking in a week or two people would get to it, but this is great.
I think homelessness, and poverty are great subjects to try and tackle. Thing is they are hard to do research on in the sense of how do you walk up to a homelss person and ask them how things turned out this way for them.
Other areas of interest I can think of are child abuse (as a subjest to deal with in a comic), people with developmental disabilities (like autism and mental retardation [I plan on dealing with this in futurew issues of the book I am producing]), and politics in a more guerrilla fashion like Rage Against the Machine (I also plan on taking this on with the local rock group the Step-Monsters [they appear in the pages of my comic and will be launching campaigns against the mayor, and govenor of Apex City])
The other social issue discussed was a superhero response to a natural disaster, such as Hurrican Katrina, or maybe a tornado. They attempted this shortly after 9/11 with the attack on the World Trade Center. I realize this was not a natural disaster, but I think it may be the closest editors have allowed in such a fashion. I think a group of heroes , whether they be super powered or not, responding to a disaster the caliber of Katrina would be an amazing story. It might also delve into a political type scenario with how the government responded to the people affected.
Terrorism is most likely going to be what writers attempt to tackle in a more fictionalized way. I can't think that a writer might take the liberty of directly attacking the governemental system we currently have in place. Although I would certainly applaud any efforts in this matter. I am sort of going to be tackling this in future issues of Youth in Asia. Right now I am working on issue 2 which is deeply routed in a vigilante type story, based in a serial kidnapping. It's all action and the end brings a nice closure although I feel I am going to have a swerve in how the local government responds to the vigilante in question and the people responsible for the serial kidnappings.
Please let me know if there are any other events or subject matters you might like to see in a comic. I am mainly working at a pop culture type story. Here is a quick synopsis:
Youth in Asia:
It revolves around a guy and his sidekick, who moves into the city and makes friends with the local misfits. The book is about their adventures and everyday life. Although sometimes that everyday life involves jumping rooftop to rooftop prowling the dark alleyways in search of evil. But most of the book will focus on a handful of characters that are truly beyond family. They have several common bonds which include, making people self aware, trying to undermine the mayor of Apex City and the govenor of the state, rock music, horror movies and even wrestling. I know you might think wrestling won't work in a comic book, but there is a genre out there for everyone. I think it's about time that wrestling got it's due and not with it being cheesey like the old WCW comics from Marvel or the attempt at horror and the control of Hell with the Undertaker series from Chaos, although the Mankind one shot was very well done. It has to be done in a way that ordinary people can relate to in an everyday kind of way wrapped up into package that is well written from a creative/ wrestling mind as well as relate to what people know in real life. While not many people are wrestlers or go patrolling the streets at night and most certainly they don't fight maniacal super villains, they do have family and friends. That's my angle. As a friend of mine who read some of the stories said it's like Friends the tv show in terms how my characters relate to each other, but with the vigilante/ anti-hero and indy wrestler quest to make it more intriguing and action oriented. But in the end it is a love story.
this comes straight from my profile on Myspace.
this one comes from Agnew's profile: Agnew is my sidekick, the guy who rides with me into the face of battle... he's also my avatar here on CBRForums
My name is Agnew. I am a professional sidekick. I work side by side with John Nash, the number one on my top friends list. Right now I help Nash out on his comic book and at work for the Blake Foundation. Every day I help with the daily rigamerole of working with JoJo and Louise.
I am the star of the comic book Youth in Asia. It's an indy book about 8 friends living is Apex City, and how they live their daily lives. Four of them are part of a local rock band, the Step Monsters who are a cross between Rage Against the Machine and Bikini Kill. Nash is a pro wrestler by day and a super powered vigilante at night. I go everywhere with him. Kyle is Nash's girlfriend and guitarist for the Step Monsters. Grrry is Kyle's best friend and front woman for the band. She is also heavily involved in XXX, the local wrestling promotion. Em is Grrry's oldest friend, from the first day of third grade and the bassist for the Step Monsters. She is also the quietest member of the group. Only speaking with something funny or extremely intelligent, kinda like Silent Bob. Jane is the drummer, and the girlfriend of Kevin. Kevin is a certified genius of computers and a four star hacker. He's also the weapons designer for Nash and his "Oracle" of information. And Jaime is Grrry's brother. He is developmentally disabled, with the mannerisms of about a four year old. He's the only person who is allowed to call Grrry by her real name, Geri. He is also the only person who is allowed to hold Grrry's most prized possession, Grrr Bear; and is also allowed to call Agnew, Mr. Teddy. And well, I am Agnew, Nash's sidekick and best friend and confidant. Created in Nash's split personality after hsi family was brutally murdered, and placed in the confines of Norfolk Asylum. I am his guardian and protector, the one who knows Nash best and look forward to making Apex City safer, better place to live.

Please let me know what you think. Issue one is out right now and is heavily centered on the wrestling promotion, issue 2 is due in late August/early September, and issue 3 is slated to be a slack type story in homage to Kevin Smith.

My pull list recently went up to over 120 titles per month.
I always swore I would never let it go over 100 so when I realised that it had got so high I started making cuts. It's now down to pretty much 100 and with things such as civil war coming to a close soon it should drop to around 90 after xmas.
As far as my "Essential" titles go, it would be:

Y: The Last Man
The Exterminators
DMZ
Punisher (Max)
Nextwave
Runaways
Ultimates
Daredevil
Walking Dead
Fell
Invincible

Good to see the love for American Virgin, Mr. Palmer. I fear that book may get the axe if the sales continue sliding, but I'm really enjoying it thus far. C'est la vie. My pulls are in my sig. Lots of minis, irregularly published stuff, and bimonthlies. I need Warren Ellis to do some more longform monthly work, though were I him, I'd more than likely not bother, either.

I’d mention the subject matter I’d like to see in comics, but that kinda ties heavily into the original material I’m writing for hopeful publication.

I go for superheroes mostly. I like the idea of Super McHero fighting Powered the Villain, so sue me. This list doesn’t include anything that’s coming out soon or anything that comes out once in a blue moon (heh), but here’re the essentials of mine.

52
Action Comics
Astonishing X-Men
Authority
Cable & Deadpool
Conan
Ghost Rider
Green Lantern Corps

My pull list changes fairly regularly. At the moment, I seem to be dropping more and more Marvel titles. DC have drawn me in big time with IC and OYL.

Marvel

Excalibur
X-Factor
Daredevil
Thunderbolts (I'll be dropping this with issue #109)
Captain America
Young Avengers (If it ever comes back)

DC

JSA & JSA Classified (The one book I'll buy regardless of creative team. I love DC's golden age characters, and I'll buy any book featuring any of the JSA/All-Star Squadron characters)
52
Batman
Detective Comics
Catwoman
Robin
Superman
Action Comics
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Teen Titans
JLA

Other Publishers

Boom Studios

Hero Squared
Planetary Brigade
Jeremiah Harm

IDW

Fallen Angel

Ape Entertainment

The Black Coat

There's a few series I buy in trades, either because I missed them as single issues or because I think they read better in that format

Birds of Prey
Outsiders
Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimates
Fables
Y: The Last Man

As for what issues I'd like to see covered, I don't mind seeing any topic explored, as long as the writer has researched the topic in question. One of the amazing things about comics is how human topics can be extrapolated upon and explored in a superhuman environment. In many respects, the larger than life settings of a comic universe can be used to examine a topic in its most extreme form.
