View Full Version : Does anyone work from home?

My neighbor does computer programming from home, and I'm always seeing how many companies are hiring people to work from their homes in clerical and call center type jobs. I'm interested in possibly doing that, but when I search around online, I get a lot of sites that look like the standard internet scam.

Do any of you work from home? If so, what company do you work for and what type of work do you do?

And, if you don't work from home, but have heard of a respectable company that does that, please tell me.

Thanks.

I'm currently a housewife. I work for the family, if you know what I mean.

He just wants a job where he can wear a shark boy mask and beat off whenever the urge strikes him.
And really, who wouldn't?

I don't know anything about these companies except they promise that you can make 500 to 1000 a week. I'm not sure I buy that. But I'd be suprised if you didn't have to buy something to get started in one of those companies.

It almost seems too good to be true. And when it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Yes. That would be nice.

I sure do.

GildaUnless my wife gets a hefty raise, I can't afford to be the "housewife". :)

My secret plot is revealed!

I read an article in Newsweek or some "real" magazine about the trend of people that are working from their homes. The article mentioned a few companies specifically, so I know that there are some reputable ones out there; I'm just trying to find one of the real ones.

A local call center, West Corporation, has contracted people that do that sort of work from home, but they already have way too many "sub-contractors" as they are called, and I wouldn't have a steady 40 or more hours of work a week.

Anyway, I know that those types of jobs are out there, it's just a matter of finding a real company that does it.

I just met a guy who works for IBM and he works from home.

Most sales jobs will let you work from home because you are closer to your region of sales. You will travel a lot but you'll spend most of your time at home answering email and making phone calls.

More and more compnaies are doing it now. saves them on some costs.

Good luck to ya sharkboy

Thanks. My local area is kind of limited as to what I can find in terms of any job really. I'm trying to find an online source that could hook me up.

My aunt started working from home after my cousin was born. She used to work for Verizon in NYC and now she lives in PA and still works for them just from home. I think shes some sort of engineer.

I used to work in a company that had telecommuters--actually, it was mostly the IT department that allowed people to work from home 1 day of the week, so it's not just so much the company, the each department's needs. If your physical presence isn't required like a lot of tech jobs, such as your friend's computer programming job, and a company/department is willing to let you work from home, you can then just do your work online.

If you're talking about completely working from home just as telemarkers, well...I do see flyers on phone polls where you can stuff envelopes at home.

Thanks. That's just the type of thing I'm trying to avoid.

I wasn't sure if you were just looking for any simple job where you can work from home since you mentioned call centers.

The point I was trying to make is that telecommuting benefits has more to do with the type of work you do than with any particular company.

I suppose a company can make a company-wide policy where no one can work from home, but unless it's a really small company, I think most companies offer it as a benefit for certain departments/jobs.

That probably doesn't help you much, though.

Well, you did answer the question that I asked. Thanks, brother.

As I've said before, after my many years in the Army, my job skills fall into administrative stuff and killing people. I'm just looking all over for a decent job and it seems like I'm hearing about more and more people having jobs where they work exclusivly from home. I've heard of people doing call center type jobs, and clerical type jobs via the internet. That's the sort of thing I'm looking for, but I don't know where to start to search for a decent company that offers that kind of work opportunity. If I search around, what comes up online is a lot of things that look like scams.

I know that those jobs are out there, I just need a nudge in the right direction.

I don't know.......I like killing people so maybe I should get into mercenary work. I wonder if they have a 401K.

I own my own business and I work out of my house.

I'm a franchise owner, a publisher and involved in both Real Estate AND Advertising.

I own one of those free publications you see at the supermarket with homes in them. One of the really nice looking ones.

Working out of the house has its benefits, short commute, tax deductions, casual dress etc. Then again, I'm always at work.

I work in a family business that's run out of a house. So I do techinically work from "a" home. We're essentially a signing service that sends notaries all over the state of PA. (If that even means anything to anyone here. I always have the damndest time explaining what we do to anyone.)

But, um, working from home is HIGHLY over-rated, imho. I'm admit I'm anti-social and all, but the lack of non-phone related contact with people has been driving even me nuts for some time now. I guess that could be more from my position of managing the "office," but still.

I'm looking into other avenues to save my little remaining sanity.

My parents did one of those tradepapers for a while. We had a big ass printing press in our house at that time. I don't know why they stopped doing it.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I've done some more research and I'm going to apply for the local call center that sub-contracts some of it's work. I don't want to do that kind of job, but it might be nice to work from home for awhile. When I'm not taking a call I could still be reading my textbooks or something. I guess I didn't think about the lack of human contact, but I still have friends and a wife so I'm not thinking that would be an issue for me.

I guess that my neighbor's company has annalist positions that mainly deal with administrative type stuff. He's going to ask for me. Hopefully something will come up soon.

I tried running certain aspects of my trucking company from home for awhile but it just did not work out. I need to be on site for clients and my employees. It was painful clear it was not working after a week.

Some of the insurance companies are starting to let their Admin staff work at home.

Try looking at large ads for Admin staff in CareerBuilder or Monster and see if you can come up with something.

Ours is a nationaly branded magazine, high-gloss and all that. Our magazine is printed in Florida in a printhouse that's about the size of 3 Costcos, it's an amazing place if you've ever been around printing (which you obviously have).

I don't know that we could publish AND print, my life is pretty much tied up in this thing as it is. But it is a great business and quite lucrative.

I don't see how admin work can be done off site, really.

However, maybe some of it can be phoned in.

The trick is to first get the job, and then see if you can swing some offsite work.

I've worked some jobs where more than half the work, I did at home. But then, that was as a writer.

Most of the administrative stuff that I do now, is either faxed or e-mailed around. One time, I even had to mail something. I deal with people in 3 timezones in my current job, and manage to do the work that I do for them by either getting the instructions over the phone, or e-mail. With a scanner, or other digital sender, you don't even need a fax machine any more. I could see doing an administrative job from home pretty easily.

True, its kinda hard to take someone who does security for a living when they are sitting behind a desk naked.

It's all part of the psychological intimidation. An insane looking, bald, naked man is scarier than some asshole wearing a shirt and a tie.

Gosh, looks like you can't get an answer, but I'll try to help since I am looking for an at home job. I have done about 3 interviews so far, but did not like a couple of them. I am doing the basic certification for www.workathomeagents.com. Which is west. They provide call center jobs from what I gather, it's taking inbound calls for companies like sears and cricket. From what I've read they are legitimate. They work you as an independent contractor, and issue a 1099 at the end of the year. This site is basically sales or telemarketing, which I don't care for but the did contact me and that is http://www.brightenemployment.com/ , www.nticentral.org also has work at home positions but it is for people with a disability. I applied at http://www.cloud10corp.com/careercenter/ , but I have not heard from them yet. There is http://www.verafast.com/job_opportunities.htm , I have not heard from them yet. There is many more that I have applied for but can't remember right off. I get most of my information from www.wahm.com , the message board area. If you read thru the forums you can find other places to apply for. Hope this helps.
