View Full Version : Anyone else think they're kind of cheesy?

I mean, I do love the Joker, but honestly, I have to say the heroes of DC seem kind of cheesy to me.

I'll start off by saying that I am somewhat of a Marvel fan. I think they are doing an awesome job with the Ultimate Universe. But I'd have to say, the only character I find corny/cheesy in Marvel is Captain America, it always seemed to me like he was more for the kiddies.

But getting back to DC, I think Superman and Wonder Woman are some of the worst as far as being cheesy goes.

That's not really what I'm getting at though, I think the only DC character that I think isn't too bad is Green Arrow.

Please don't flame me, I don't have anything against anyone who reads DC, or DC themselves.

I'd rather read about something cheesy, like fighting giant aliens selling off global landmarks, than read something horribly uninteresting, like yet another alternate reality centered around mutants, the most overexposed characters in history.

And really, as far as cheese goes, the only books even remotely cheesy are the Classified books.

All superheroes are cheesy on some level. They run around in tights for God's sake.

What do you mean by 'cheesy'? That's a pretty vague term. Can you be more specific? What, in your opinion, is missing from these heroes or what stops them from being...I guess "cool" or "hip" or "edgey" would be the word? Like Wolverine?

Please, tell me what cheesy means to you.

:-)

Anyway, I don't think DC heroes are really that "cheesy" per se, though I will admit that the majority of the DC books I read are those of the non-powered hereos, i.e. the Batclan, Green Arrow, and such, and Marvel doesn't really have any heroes like that. That isn't to say I don't like DC's other characters. I like Superman, though I don't read him (which is really to do more with monetary concerns), and I do read and enjoy other actual super-powered books.

So, yea, I disagree.

I was waiting for someone to ask me, yes, well, I couldn't think of any other word.

But what I meant was, take Superman for example. Goody two shoes most of the time, runs around in a cape and underwear, and dosn't really have enough depth for me.

Also, another thing I was trying to get at was that a lot of DC heroes look lame, silly, stupid, etc.

So not only do I dislike DC heroes on the inside, but on the outside aswell.

Goody two-shoes, running around in underwear? Sounds like Spider-Man, to me. See? That description can be applied to most generic superheroes.

Not as much as Superman though, besides, I probably would have never liked the first Spider-Man comics anyway.

Anyway, Spideys costume never seemed as bad to me as Superman's. Something about capes looks really lame to me.

Well, rest assured, DC is certainly not writing comics like they used to in the Silver Age, just as Marvel isn't. The cheese melted.

How much DC stuff have you read? Because other than calling Superman a goody two shoes who lacks depth, the only other thing you've said is that the characters look silly because they have capes.

Has DC made any Punisher or Hellboy type characters? Like someone with a gun, an attitude, and a nice coat.

DC has Lobo. And Lobo is just.

Hitman? Lobo?

Really, I tend to avoid Punisher and the like so I can't help you much there.

Jack Zodiac

Yeah, but DC's "Punisher" was more of a parody of his one-dimensional character (until Ennis turned him around). Hellboy, well... they've had a character like Hellboy for a long time, well before Hellboy was created by Mignola.

If you're looking for "dark" heroes you're not thinking broadly enough.

Well I've only bought a couple Green Arrow issues, and I bought Kevin Smiths take on it.

But I have read some DC comics that my friends have had. Mostly Batman, which isn't too bad, but I wouldn't buy. But I have read comics of almost every old character in DC. I can't say I like Teen Titans...

Why are you looking for Punisher and Hellboy clones in DC?

Ok, then I don't know what to tell you. I would think Batman would be right up your alley, but then again he has a cape and you've apparently made up your mind on him. By the way, the fact that you said capes were cheesy and then asked for characters with "a nice coat" made me chuckle.

It might sound strange, but I just think it's more normal to wear a trench coat than a cape.

But I'm just a really big fan of comics and manga where the main characters only power is being really good with a gun.

Now I'm not too picky with that though, I like Hellboy and that...

No, I get you and I agree. I just found it funny that you were complainig about DC being cheesy and have a dress code for the characters you like. Also, "normal" isn't something I look for in comics.

Hitman was good. Or The Spectre. Manhunter. If you want to get out of DCU proper and into Wildstorm, or Vertigo, you've also got The Authority, Planetary, WildCATS, Sandman, Swamp Thing... lots more than cheese and capes.

If you like trenchcoats, why are you not reading Hellblazer? And I suspect that you would really like Starman, who wears a black leather car coat over street clothes... no mask, no cape.

Yes, it's more normal to wear a trenchcoat than a cape. NEWSFLASH: Mutants, gods, androids, sorcerors and even more normal superheroes are NOT normal. Unlike regular folks, they have superhuman powers and they fight crime. Why are you trying to force superhero comics into being normal? Can't you just read some non-superhero comics?
