View Full Version : Why do you like Superman?

So how did you start liking Superman comics, movies, tv shows, etc.?
I think the reason that I like Superman so much is because I've always been an optimist. I've always thought that people were naturally good, so he's always been my favorite super hero. The fact that somebody could be so powerful and use that power to fight for truth and justice (and all that stuff :p ) has always appealed to me. I've just recently started reading comics, and I've started with several Superman and Batman trades. And, although I like Batman's stories better so far, I still like Superman's character much better.
So why do you like Superman?

Because he's the rule, more than any other superhero in comic book history. Everyone's compared to him, and justly, because he is the epitome of superheroics. Nearly limitless in power, morally upright, and so optimistic it rubs off on nearly any other person with him, even Batman.

Kingdom Come made me care about Supes alot.I think with a near perfect character like Supes,it's all about the angles the writers use to examine his character which will make non-Supes fans like myself feel for the character.
Next on my list is Superman For All Seasons.

I like his powers. I like it that he's a good guy. I like his cape. His curl. And when he gets angry and lets rip, that's when I cheer out loud.

I got started on supes by the movies with christopher reeves and also I used to watch the tv shows even back to the on with George reeves. Then when I got a little older I started reading the comics. Unfortunately I don't read the newer comics anymore because they are all adds and have only about 6 real pages of comics half of which are splash pages. Thats why I stick to going to comic stores and conventions to buy superman comics from the 60'-90's any further and they aren't that good.

Superman is THE superhero. If you're going to be a superhero fan, you might as well like the first and greatest. :p

I think I've always liked Superman.
I mean, why not? As Clark, he's that middle-american farmboy that remains humble through thick and thin. We're just lucky that he crash landed with the Kent family instead of someone like... uh... let's see here... Luthor's? Jeffry Domer's (sp?)? Pauly Shore's? (I mean, that would be 'Super' annoying.)

That... was... utterly terrifying...
Never do that to me again!

I can't explain it. I think that it's because it was the old 80's Cary Bates + Curt Swan Superman stories that got me into comics in the first place. God knows he doesn't often have a comic that's all that good

I like how he is a hunk, and I like how he is fast and strong! I also like how his Name is very simple and it says it all "super man".I like how his chest can reflect bullets, and I like how he can bend metal

If the rule is "absolute power corrupts absolutely", then Superman is the exception. I've come to really appreciate that aspect of his character; his sense of conviction. He could conquer the planet if he wanted, but he knows better.
Superman: The Animated Series was my real intro to the character (for some reason, I had this huge bias against the guy when I was younger), and stories like Kingdom Come, Red Son, Supreme, and the last volume of JLA got me hooked. Now I'm interested in every incarnation of Superman.

I used to dislike Superman. I thought he was too strong, too boring, and too good. I definitely leaned towards Batman, especially since I loved the cartoon.
However I've matured, and grown a little wiser, and can fully appreciate what Superman represents to me. He's perfection and he's a winner. He's what I hope people could be like one day, not weighed down by their own weaknesses. Angst is usually for the teenagers. I now appreciate Superman as much as Batman.
I don't expect him to be relatable to many people. Many have personal problems and to them those problems are huge. They'd like to see these things reflected in their entertainment but I think there's gotta be room for symbol of greatness.

I like him because at the same time he's the world's most powerful superhero, he's also human. Which we've seen more lately, I like the Clark Kent stories, almost more than the Superman stories.

I think my like of Superman started with not wanting to be into Batman. EVERYONE was into Batman and all I ever heard from my other comic book collecting friends when I was in school was "Batman! Batman! Batman!" I had some friends who would only collect Batman.
Just to tick those guys off I started to make Superman my guy because all my buddies really hated Superman (he's lame! he's too whitebread! nothing can hurt him! it's too easy for him!) But once I got into the Superman stories I realized there are two things that are really really cool about Superman.
1.) I think it takes more courage and discipline to be a boyscout in this world than it does to be a vigilante or a mercenary or a rockstar hero. Superman IS dorky, in a way, because he believes in principles the world will tell you are outdated. But Superman doesn't listen to all that. He sticks to his guns and stands by his principles! He's rebellious! Just like I wanted to be...
2.)Superman stories are really bad when they're bad, but when they're good...oh man, they're incredible. I think it's because Superman is so physically invulnerable that you have to put him in EMOTIONAL danger. When a writer truly pulls that off, it can be very moving. It's a deeper read than your normal adventure story.
Everyone go check out Kurt Busiek's Superman in stores now! It's great! Super-intellect is back!
P.S. I got over my Batman hatred and I like him too now.

Same here. It's rare that you'll find a kid who will say Superman is "cool", especially next to Batman. I always thought Batman looked better, fought better, had better villains...wait, I guess I still think all those things, but just because Batman is cooler doesn't mean you can't like heroes who are a bit on the corny side.
Superman: The Animated Series taught me a lot about his history and his world (moreso than the movies), and he just grew on me. Superman's values, his power, his mythology, there's nothing else like it. And look at the other two most popular heroes, Batman and Spider-Man. They get real depressing at times, Superman isn't about that.
I also like how Superman has existed for so long and there are so many interpretations of him. In fact, between Lois and Clark, Superman The Animated Series, and Smallville, Superman has been on TV in some form or another every year (not sure about 2000) for the past ten years or so. All different interpretations, sure, but it's fun to see what qualities they all share.

Spider-man is who I relate to when life is kicking my ass, and I have to be goofy just to stay sane. Wolverine is who I relate to when I am kicking life's ass right back, and I am grinning the whole time. But Superman? Well, he's who I want to be when I grow up!

My turn now.
I have to say I agree with many things that have been said here.
First, he's simply the First and Greatest Superhero of Them All. The source of everything, the origin. The undisputed King of Superheroes, whether some people accept it/realize it or not. He has an aura of awe and glory that no other hero can even aspire to have.
Second, his story. No, In my case it's not about the immigrant part. No. It's about that heavy messianic component, that savior that has come to lead humankind to light. His love for this planet and its inhabitants make him able to give his own life if it means salvation for us.
The other thing is his powers. The man CAN FLY. His powers are soooo amazing. He's a freaking god, who can tear planets apart if he wants to. I also like his willpower. He wins, no matter what. With or without powers, he ALWAYS wins. It shows us that we really can achieve great things if we really want to.
I don't know. Perhaps it is whatever light/good that's left in me that seeks to manifest itself through this.
And hell, Superman's the man. He's the first, the best, the coolest, the most powerful.
SUPERMAN FOREVER!!!

The Reeves movie did it for me really. I was just a little kid, and I wanted to have those powers.
Now at 20, the character appeals to me simply because of the ideals he believes in and the way he is.
Growing up in 90s Russia, it was far too easy to become bitter, especially at the west in general. I guess believing in a good guy helped me some.

Superman is my favorite hero not because he is almost indestructible, but because he cares. He's not fueled by rage, guilt, or thrills, he does what he does because he wants to help people. That really appeals to me for some reason.

I never did, when i was a kid there was a lot of reprints from the 60-70s comming out here, i remember thinking they were stupid, and i was never that fond of the old Superman movies (i like the new one better).
Only when Byrne depowered him i began to find him intresting enogh to read again.
I liked Superman TAS too, but he is not even on my top ten list of heroes.
I prefer heroes with small or without superpowers at all and has always done.

Hmmm. What do I like more? The hero who does a lot with nothing (or little) or the hero who is responsible with the lot they have. I think given the current global status, I can appreciate the hero who is responsible with their amazing powers more. I like both types of heroes, but I think the world has more people making do with a little, than it has of people being responsible with their "powers". Superman's the best.

TO me Superman is a legend, an Icon, a pop culture icon, and a true heroic immigrant.
He is out to protect those he love on his adopted home world. He is married to a beautiful earth woman and he has the greatest friends a person of his power could have.
His arch rival is a misguided man who too can change if he just let go of the past.
He a clear example for the next generation of heroes on what is or isn't justice.
That is what Superman is to me. :D
