from the x-axis...

"Finally, I'd like you to join me in a moment's silence to contemplate the tragic demise of X-Men Unlimited. The pointless bimonthly anthology was cancelled back in April, but I didn't mention that when I reviewed the final issue. There was a simple reason for that: Marvel just stopped soliciting it, without actually announcing that the book was dead, and I just didn't notice that it was the last issue. I twigged a fortnight ago when I was writing up the Marvel sales column for June - which Heidi MacDonald will presumably be posting on The Beat shortly, now that she's back from San Diego.

Strangely enough, the cancellation of X-Men Unlimited seems to have gone completely unnoticed - or at least, any reaction has slipped beneath Google's radar. That's remarkable, when you think about it. Twenty thousand people read X-Men Unlimited. And that's how much impression it made on them. They didn't even notice it was gone, let alone care".

i'll admit, i did not pick up x-men unlimited (2nd series).
i followed the 1st series sporatically until issue 26 where i picked each remaining issue up until it was cancelled at 50.

i had not heard anything about the 2nd series ending, echoing paul's point.

who read the title and didn't notice it was gone?

They mentioned on Joe Fridays that it might evolve into something different (but implied it was ending). I didn't notice it was left off solicits either, but then again I haven't picked up any issue from this series.

I enjoyed it and noticed it gone. But it really was pretty pointless. There were a few really good issues in the second series though. Kitty and Beast's night at the opera, Bobby's resignation letter, The all Beast issue, etc. But it was nothing like the first series, which actually had some bearing on canon.

i thought the book (at least the 1st series) was a good place for some non-x people to do x-related work or for some up-and-coming creators to shine.
i'm assuming the 2nd series was much of the same (i've seen issue summaries) but i agree with paul that the book was not really important/a great title for marvel to publish (which is why i passed on getting the 2nd series).

I wish this series was used for things like wrapping up Neverland or something--like a complimentary pick up for other ongoings.

With an ever-growing pull list, I just didn't want to read solo stories of characters who are already in ongoings. :o

I never really bought this series... I had noticed it wasn't being solicited anymore, but i wasn't that bothered and assumed that it was something to do with what Joe Q said about it evolving into something else.

That's too bad. Unlimited wasn't great every issue, but it was a chance to do some character pieces that aren't part of a bigger storyline. It seems like the rest of the X-books are all so wrapped up in these huge mega-storylines that there isn't time to focus on the smaller stories.

yeah, it should have been used for storylines involving b or c list characters & catching up on what theyve been doing...hopefully the next incarnation will do that...maybe thats what the "Marvel Presents" title sneeked at Comic-con is supposed to be?

i loved the concept, it failed far too often in execution.

i liked the first incarnation the best... with the frenetic pacing in many of the comics these days, it was a place where we could see the effects of the dramatic events in the main titles.

Wha'?
That totally slipped under the radar.

It's a shame because there was some really beautiful stories in this last series, like Kitty's "date" with the boy who vanished into thin air, Wolverine's healing story where I got my sig' from, and the recent all-Colossus issue that was like the only thing notable Colossus has done since he came back....

It's also a shame because I love the fact that the series should be a line for up and coming writers/artists to show what they have. I think it's an exceptional way to try out people who are trying to break in. And it looks good for Marvel if they'd come out and blatantly say that it's a line to help out newbie creators.

Oh well. Whatever they do with it, they should either make it a line where ramifications from current books are more througholy fleshed out like others have posted, or make an all new book X-book entirely. I'm always willing to shell out my $$$ for the "X". :D

The Bobby issue was fantastic!
