Hello folks!
I'm new to this forum and thought perhaps that some veteran comic book lovers could give me a hand with some questions I have about the X-Men tittles.
I don't understand them...
Well, I understand Ultimate X-Men. It's a seperate universe from the others. I just don't understand the roles of Astonishing X-men or New X-Men. The plain old X-Men title even confuses me. What are the relations of all of these comics!? I tried wikipedia but didn't exactly get in good with what was going on.
Anyone want to educate me?
Thanks.
The Astonishing X-men are the X-men that the school wo try to put a good public face on mutants.
The UnCanny X-men are right now going into Shiar space to smack Vulcan (see Deadly Genesis) around.
The Adjetiveless group is the black ops arm of the X-men doing the not so pretty jobs.
(I may have transposed Uncanny and Adjetiveless)

Well, its quite simple actually. Yes the Ultimate books are in their own continuity, sort of redoing all the classic Marvel titles from scratch.
We still have the Uncanny X-Men and X-Men (adjectiveless). Uncanny features, Nightcrawler, Marvel Girl (Rachel), Havok, Polaris, Darwin (a member of a team of X-Men that Prof X assembled to rescue the originals from Krakoa. This team failed and the Prof then got the All New All different squad we all know and love) and finally James Proudstar. This team is following Prof X to space to stop Cyclop's other brother Vulcan (also from the interim team like DArwin) who is pissed with the Prof and the Shiar (he was born there and was a slave). Their adventures will be in space for the next 1 year.
Adjectiveless is Rogue, Iceman, Cannonball, Cable, Sabretooth, Mystique who are sort of the away team that takes care of the seedy dark business.
Now, there is a third team of X-Men in the title Astonishing X-Men. They are Cyclops, Hank, Emma, Colossus and Shadowcat. They stay at the school and train the kids as well as act as the public face of the X-Men, taking care of the old fashioned heroics.
New X-Men, is about the kids at the school. These 4 titles are in the same continuity together with the satelite titles like X-Factor (mutant investigators) and New Excalibur (mutant team in the UK). There is the Exiles which is in the same continuity but feature reality hopping mutants who go around to stop menaces to the different universes. Psylocke is slated to join this book once Chris Claremont takes over.
Cable and Deadpool is about these two guys. It seems that Cable is the ruler of some island utopia and is sort of on a savior mission now. I don't read it so someone else can explain this. I hear great things about this and wish I was reading it.
I only read Uncanny, Adjectiveless and Astonishing. Right now, these 3 are all well written, with really good writers in them.
I am sure others will be able to better explain the satelite books.
Hope all this helps.

Well, following on from the Hornet's above post, i'll talk about X-Factor.
X-Factor follows on directly after first the Madrox mini (though not necessary to read, is good to get an idea of Madrox's mutant ability) and then House Of M.
The team involved is Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox), Strong Guy (Guido Carosella), Wolfsbane (Rhane Sinclair), Siryn (Theresa Cassidy), M (Monet St. Croix), Rictor (Julio "Ric" Richter), and Layla Miller (the 'key' from House Of M).
Madrox owns a private investigations office in Mutant Town, and so therefore they have seen how hard the massive depowering of mutants has hit the community firsthand, as even one of their members has lost their power. The team has sworn to solve the mystery behind 'M Day', not knowing that the Avengers/Astonishing/Every-bloody-one-else already know, as they were IN it, and have not disclosed any details to anyone. Layla Miller herself knows all the details, yet does not disclose that information, and she remains a huge enigma as she arrives unannounced and uninvited to X Factor Investigations, seemingly knowing everything before it happens.
All the while, there is another agency, Singularity - a big business corporation headed by both Damien Tryp Snr and Jnr, who seem to have their own agenda when it comes to the massive depowering.
Um...it's hilarious, it's mysterious, it's exciting, it's just awesome.
I hope i didnt miss anything though...

Essentially, Astonishing, Uncanny, and adjectiveless X-Men cover three smaller teams doing different stuff within one larger X-Men roster.
