not sure if this is the right place for it but,
has anyone realized the similarities between the squadron supreme mini series and civil war? maybe the politics arent exactly the same but the fact that you have a pro and a con side batteling it out over real world politics
and the fact that most of them used to be team mates and friends.

Maybe yes, bur Squadron Suprem is from the 80s and to me considered a classic, this "Civil war" is nothing that will be remembered in the same way.

It have some things that DC did in their recent crisis to, the mindwipings and the talk about the right and wrongs in superheroes trying to control the world.

Gruenwald was a genius:D

The original Squardon Supreme did very much foreshadow some of the themes that have appeared in comic books since it's original publication. Civil War is just one of them.

Squadron Supreme was innovative for it's time.

It didn't hold up well.

As a relatively new reader (comparitively speaking), I found the plotting to be somewhat ham-fisted and plagued by overwraught melodramatics. The dialogue made my head hurt (then again, that's a problem with the vast majority of the Big Two comics published during that period). The characterisation wasn't actually that bad, but, at times, it was seemed constrained by Silver Age archetypes the characters were based on.

In the end, I regard the original Squadron Supreme as a classic because of it's historical significance rather then whatever literary merits it posesses. Sorry.

but like you said youre new to comic books and that style of writing isnt as popular nowadays.

Actually it is Identity Crisis that stole painfully from Squadron Supreme. The SS earth is what would happen if the anti-reg side where to win. A large number of heroes operating above the law.

And SS did have some problems with its characterization and execution. I, for one, found the characters sense of morality bizarre. Tom Thumb is okay with brainwashing people, but not with stealing from a dictator or confronting someone on abuse of the brainwashing technology.

But I will say it did a VERY good job at protraying the "slippery slope."
