View Full Version : Vacant 'slots' for Superman villains

Most villains fall into slots, they represent something.

Bizzaro and Ultraman are Superman's dark reflections.
Luthor is his opposite (mental vs physical, skulking in shadows vs out in the sun etc etc)
Myptyix (sp?), Toyman and Prankster are trickster villains, harmless but annoying
Darkseid is his ultimate enemy
(and not all villains fit neatly into slots either)

And so on. Most characters have villains who fill these roles. But there are some common roles that are not filled, filling them might give Supes a better rogue gallery.

So...

Femme Fatal - The only one I can think of is Maxima. She might be up for the job with some work.
Magic - Superman's other weakness and other than Mxy (who doesn't REALLY use magic) there's no serious magical foe for superman. Silver Banshee and Lord Satanus are fairly minor league.
Terrorist/Guerilla - Superman fights literal terrorists daily, even a terrorist group with a nuclear weapon takes no more than a panel or two. But since one of his roles is a symbol of America the superpower what about a villain who uses guerilla tactics against him? Someone with few or no powers who strikes at civilians and never, ever engages Supes in a fair fight.
Vice Lord - a similar idea, someone who strikes at metropolis' hidden desires rather than directly. The old Byrne character Sleeze might work here.

Any other villain roles people would like filled?

Doesnt Intergang fill the Terrorist slot? Also, I dont think Superman would work with a Femme-Fatale, just because he is Superman. And where does Braniac fall in your catagories? Or General Zod?

And I dont think Darkseid is Superman's "ultimate enemy". He is really the New Gods' ultimate enemy.

Not every villain fits in neatly but I think Zod and Braniac fit in the categories I already mentioned.

Zod is another reflection, survivor of Krypton but evil.
Braniac might be another opposite (by opposite I mean antithesis, a reflection is the same but for one feature, an antithesis is as different as you can get) robotic inhumanity to Superman's humanity, cold study vs warm altruism... it's a stretch but I think it can work.

As for the 'terrorist' I'm thinking in terms of one man, not another normal or costumed terrorist group. One guy who superman could nail in a fair fight but who never fights fair. Think of the viet cong vs a nuclear armed B52. Sometimes Luthor does this but he's got so much going on already I think a full on untouchable terrorist would be a good start for a villain.

Ok, how about that guy named Bloodsport (or something). He was a typical 90's character heavily armed and kind of a meathead. He was pretty much the epitome of one-man-terrorist-cell. I think he was also a white superemacist and at one point said to Superman "You should be working with me, you're almost white!".

He could work, just change his power to teleport in guns to one that lets him teleport out.

He kills and disappears before Superman can bring his power to bear.

And his racist cause can create a problem of Superman losing the hearts and minds of people. Bloodsport appears, kills drug deals and drug addicts and some people say that's not too bad.

I think he works in this role, it could certainly turn this obscure villain into a nice second teir foe.

Bloodsport is a white supremacist? This reminds me of a certain joke from Blazing Saddles...

*LOL* The second Bloodsport, Alex Trent (I think that was his name...?), was a white supremacist.

Yeah, in the issue I have they talk about a previous guy, so I guess hes the second one.

I have an issue where the two of them were brought together in prison for a boxing match with Superman as the referee. Bloodsport II staged a prison break, during which the first Bloodsport was killed, and was killed himself later in the same issue by his Aryan 'brothers' for getting his ass kicked during the boxing match (if I remember correctly).

That issue is sitting in a box somewhere, so I don't exactly have it available for reference.

That said, I don't like the idea giving the villains specific roles to fill. That kind of thinking comes across as 'paint-by-numbers' as opposed to actual creativity.

Are you sure they both died? The first Bloodsport recently returned for "Up, Up, and Away".

Yeah... pretty sure.

Basically, when Bloodsport II initiated his plan to escape prison, Bloodsport I stole one of his weapons and made a break for it during the chaos. He was spotted and gunned down outside the prison walls by the guards atop them as Superman arrived on the scene.

Why limit yourself by fitting supervillains into certain categories ? Not every villain can be fitted as such.

How would you fit Mr. Z , Mongul , Doomsday , Dominus , Massacre , Cyborg , Parasite , Kryptonite man , Manchester Black , Metallo , Weapon Master.

Not interested in a vicelord or some lame villain going on a killing spree. There are plenty of street heroes from metropolis that take cares of those.

Are Zod, Ultraman and Bizzaro cookie cutter characters? All 3 started as 'let's make an evil superman'. The idea of roles and archetypes is a starting point for concepts and stories, as always the real work in in delivery.

This is just a brainstorming exercise for how to spruce up Superman's rogue gallery.

The first Bloodsport was a (purportedly) Vietnam Veteran brainwashed by Luthor to go after Superman. Armed with a teleportation device which would summon weapons from a vast arsenal into his hand, Bloodsport tore apart several sections of Metropolis, and wounding Superman with a Kryptonite needle gun. Superman stopped him by ionizing the air around him, rendering his teleportation device useless.

The second Bloodsport was a white supremascist(?) surgically implanted with a teleportation device so Superman couldn't pull that ionizing trick without seriously injuring him. He targetted anyone who wasn't white. He was stopped when somebody destroyed his arsenal.

A third Bloodsport was some bodybuilder chick who could also use the teleportation trick to make quick getaways.

The most recent Bloodsport (No. 4) seems to be a random gun-toting thug.
