Batman Shadow of the Bat #1 to #4. By Alan Grant and awesome bat-artist Norm Breyfogle.

Batman "goes undercover" in Arkham to catch a killer who's escaping from Arkham and killing, then going back. It's Mr. Zsasz. Only Gordon knows that Batman is in undercover, Nightwing and Robin don't even know. so Nightwing breaks in to try and get him out.

I think it might of been called "The Last Arkham" maybe as Jeramiah Arkham is a relative of the guy who started the asylum.

It's been a long time since I've read it, so I maybe a bit off, but I'm pretty sure that's all right.

My only complaint is that Breyfogle went it ha little more horror portrayal of Batman (more like Kelley Jones whos work I cannot stand).

That was one of the angles being thrown around at that time; Bruce being in Arkham, and Dick being Batman. It could end up as a story later, or it could have been one of the many red herrings that the DC office was throwing out to keep readers off guard.

Yep - and there is a tpb (though out of print and hard to find).

there was also the Batman Armageddon 2001 Annual which had Batman turn himself into the police after believing that he'd killed the Penguin during a fight. i beleive he's held in Arkham, willingly of course because he could break out anytime he'd want, until he breaks out with the help of Anarky and Tim Drake to clear his name and take in the Joker.

of course there's the great "The Last Arkham" that launched Shadow of the Bat.

the OYL rumours so far have proven to be false.

Bruce wasn't held in Arkham during Murderer/Fugitive was he?
