Silverfish! Holy crap!

David Lapham doing a Vertigo book, I literally sang when I heard about this book. Heres what CBR's coverage of the Vertigo panel said.

"Silverfish" is a new project from David Lapham, a hardcover graphic novel in black, white and grey tones. "It's full of textbook Laphamisms," said Bond. It's a hard hitting crime book that's expected to be on shelves in 2007.

Oh man. This is really really great. Lapham's been getting a lot more outside of Stray Bullets lately, but this is probably the only one I'll buy.

I saw a preview copy for sale on ebay at the beginning of the month. This is annoying.

I got it the other day.

Good stuff.
It won't set the world alight, but it's a good ride, with a spooky dreamlike atmosphere (there's nobody else in the world except the characters), and the madness angle (of the villain who thinks he has a silverfish in his ear) is there, but never really mentioned by anyone (so who's to say it wasn't there).
Laphams page layouts are amazing - the guy really is a master at picking his 'shot' and placing panels perfectly.
I'd recommend it - it probably won't be a new favorite, but it's better than any movie thriller you'll see this month.

I finished it this morning, good stuff.

Like FunkyGreenJerusalem said, its not mindblowing or anything like that but its a very solid crime story told very well. Lapham keeps the pace moving and its very hard to put the book down once you're 30 pages in.

I would have liked the characters to be a bit more interesting as they're mostly just standard archetypes. And the plot by itself isn't the most original.

But the art, especially in the silent sequences, is excellent and it makes the story more compellling than it likely would be under a lesser talent.

The book solely works due to Lapham's talent there's nothing new or terribly original in it at all, it's just the way he presents it that pulls you in.
