The 1980's animated one! (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=77630)

I have to say: I haven't been interested in much of these TF comics since Dreamwave killed my interest with all their crap.

But I am SO buying this!

Who's with me?! :)

I don't have much interest in Transformers or this particular book, but IDW usually puts out quality stuff. I don't think they'll screw the pooch like DreamWeave did.

The only carryover to IDW, it seems, from the Dreamwave days is Don Figueroa.

That's a GOOD THING. Seeing his name attached to this project got me even more psyched. :)

yeah i'm really excited about this. i've been in a Transformers mood lately and recently watched the movie. sure it's dated and a little cheesey but it's also a little awesome.

can anyone recommend some of the more recent Transformers comics?

I'll admit the "director's cut" angle has me intrigued, but I can't remember ever seeing a comic adaptation of a movie that I liked.

Oh, felgercarb! Another book of Transformers to buy, but oh, of what a subject. Hopefully it's the version of the film where Wheelie doesn't exist. :p

So why are the Dreamwave years universally hated? I'm a big Transformers fan, but the only Dreamwave stuff I've read so far are the "More Than Meets The Eye" TPBs which I really enjoyed (I've still clung to my original Transformers Universe 1-4 issues if that tells you anything). So why the ire?

They basically raped the franchise with a billion alternate covers and non-payment to creators and license holders.

The quality of the first mini was nearly universally panned by the fandom.

For every book that was good (G1, volume 3), there were two that blew ass (Micromasters, Energon).

They did do some really good books through... but only some.

I picked up the G1 Vols. 1 and 2 trades through Amazon-- Vol. 3 doesn't ship until after Christmas (?)-- I'll post some thoughts later, but thanks for the explanation. I had read some stuff already about DreamWave's dirty pool.

I like the War Within stuff they were doing. I really wish they would finish the third volume of that....

And yet how many covers were there all up for IDW's first minseries, Infiltration?

Yea IDW thought it would'nt sell but now it is there reducing the amount of alt covers they do for Esclation. Think there only be two but I've never met anyone whose brought all the covers for each issue.

Oh trust me, I was (and still am) against that.

It's excessive, and while it may boost sales in the short term, I think it drives readerd away over the longer term.

Nonsense! Why would multiple covers drive away any sane reader?

The fact that multiple covers are still huge sellers years and years after they first began begs to differ.

Yeah, I liked the first issue. Heck, my retailer knew to pull it for me without asking. Sure they shortcut some classic scenes---the attack on the Autobot shuttle, f'r instance---but not in a bad way. The art was pretty good, and I could hear the old Vince DiCola as I read it.

It's sort of hard to compete with animation that's essentially burned into your head, but they did a serviceable job of it. The Nightbeat preview thing wasn't as fun, though. Might still buy that; I liked him from the Matrix Quest days.

I can't remember ever seeing a comic adaptation of a movie that I liked.I can.

The comic adaptation to Superman IV. That comic was coherent, well drawn, and well written. It had scenes that moved that explained major plot points. It even had a cute little scene where Clark talks to Superman to keep-up the whole secret identity thing.

I read the comic long before I saw the movie.

Now, I wish I could burn the movie from my memory. My only hope is that, as I grow older and more senile, the memory will be replaced with some other, perhaps one where I go to detention, or suffer an serious injury.

Got this. Don's storytelling still has a way to go but it was nicely improved. It really needed to show a close-up of Megs thoughwhen he delivered the "I would have waited an eternity for this line". Budiansky did a competent job scripting but some of his additions were a little unnecessary.

Ah, the Dreamwave years. I have a lot of nigh-unreadable Transformers comics from that period, before I found out what scum Pat Lee is and refused to spend another penny on anything he's involved with.
