View Full Version : Civil War #3 variant cover totally spoils my fun

I think I'm getting annoyed by all the covers that give away the end of the book. I'm a little angry at MARVELS because they're willing to sacifice the enjoyment of the book so they can boost the sale.
Civil War #3 variant is a great example.
How do you guys feel about this?

Doesn't really bother me. Like, if I use the example you gave, I don't really think that that was reflected in the book at all. And even if it was, I want to see how it happened, not just the end result. :)

From what I hear, retailers were specifically told by Marvel that the cover was going to spoil the issue, so that retailers should be aware of that.

So while, yes, it was silly of Marvel to do that, they DID warn the retailers beforehand.

I don't think that's the one he was talking about. The Ed McGuiness cover gives away the shocking ending. You can see it at http://wizarduniverse.stores.yahoo.net/apr068244.html but be warned it's a spoiler. I think it's just a bad move on Marvels part to put (Scroll to see Spoiler)Thor (end Spoiler) on the cover of a first printing of Civil War #3. I walked into my comic shop, saw the cover and knew instantly it would be who would be on the last page. They already have one varient(by Mike Turner)why not save this one for the second printing, I just don't get it.

I never even saw the variant cover so it didn't spoil the end of Civil War #3 for me.

My comic store had it on the wall behind the counter, so I saw it when I was paying for my books. I commented to them about how it had spoiled the issue for me and their response was along the lines of "well, we all knew he was coming back soon". Yeah... thanks :p

What was the ratio on this cover?

That's odd, my usual store put up a big thing over all their copies and put a big warning on the piece of paper in front of it to warn everyone of the spoilers. Nice guys.

Luckily, I got the heck out of my LCS before they displayed the cover. Either way, I would have still loved CW 3.

I didn't see the variant cover at my LCS, it might have been cool if I'd seen it!

I don't know if you have seen it yet, but it is a great cover.

At MY LCS, the variant was RIGHT NEXT TO THE NORMAL COVER.
I looked up to where CW is, looked left, looked right, looked left again, shoulders fell, and sighed. Argh.

BUT, while reading it, as excited as i was about the Big Guy returning, i had become completely engrossed in the battle, checking to see if anyone had died yet, that it was only until that first thunder bolt that i realised what Codename was...

So yeah. Another LCS had a sign where CW#3 was saying "SPOILER VARIANT, ask at desk". i'm going there from now.

What does it exactly spoil? Nothing I guess.

Well, it definitely spoiled the reveal. Anyone who saw that cover would be able to put together that Thor was coming back in this issue. Since the reveal was supposed to be the breathtaking moment, the cover kind of killed that a little. Good thing it was another exceptionally well written issue.

A store could order as many as they want, with a limit of 25.

It's even less for he sketch variants. The LCS I go to never has more than two, and they are bought within ten minutes of being put up.

Brian Cronin

The sketches are done so that a store can order one sketch for every seventy-five issues ordered.

Dang, that means if you order two, you would need to order 150 issues of the the regular CW? How the heck would they sell 150 issues? Then again, since the sketches go for a hundred bucks each, that is probably how they get their money back.

....Well I can understand that... by the same token the solicit also spoiled it... there aren't that many figures likely to return in a bolt of lightning. I entered the issue knowing pretty much 90% Thor was going to be back... but the key shock isn't that he's back, it's what side he is on.

On the same note, if you hadn't react the solicit, that sucks :(

Yes, they warned retailers. My retailer put some black paper over the cover of one issue with the others behind it. Of course if you actually wanted to BUY this cover like I did, you had the ending spoiled. I should be able to buy a varient cover without having the ending spoiled for me. I dont' care what Marvel told retailers about how to present it to us, the minute it's in my hands, I have seen the cover before I start reading it.

I also watched the guy who worked at my comic shop drag a customer over to the shelf, move the covered up issue and show him what the cover looked like (he bought it) I was like, what is even the point of you covering it up if the few people who don't notice it, you just show them anyway?

Oh. I didn't even know there was a second Variant cover. Yeah, I guess that would have spoiled it for me if I had saw it before I read Civil War #3. I agree, why do you need 2 variants? Save this picture for a reprinting.

My LCS said "Want the variant" I was like... sure.

I looked at it and was like... ooo THOR..

and promptly forgot about it when I read the issue. The last page was STILL a shock to me...

I am not a monthly reader of comics, at least not new Marvel/DC titles... and this Civil War thing has me freaking hooked.

I am going to buy the New Avengers, Wolverine, Spider-Man and the Civil War. I might give up Avengers for the Civil War frontlines... but I wont be reading the crappy art of X-Men.

The variants are for collectors. The amount of variants made are limited. However, I think they should have saved the Thor cover for a CW 4 variant.

At Strange Adventures in Halifax, they turned the book backwards, so you saw the advert on the back, there was a price tag sticker that said CIVIL WAR 3 Spoiler Cover

I am lucky enough to have both the Thor and Spidey cover, the spidey cover I might add I paid only cover price for :D

Wow, good job Johnny H. The Turner covers usually go for at least twenty bucks.

Not like it spoiled much anyway. As soon as I read the issue 3 solicit when it was released, I knew it was Thor returning. There is nobody else around that could make a big return like Thor and it was obvious since he has been gone for a while. He wasn't going to sit back and watch this go down without getting involved.

yeah, true. However, a lot of people really didn't know what to expect. Just because someone finally picked up the hammer in FF, it didn't mean Thor would be back so soon. So, they were genuinely bummed when they saw the variant cover. I can understand. The least comic book store owners could do is put a spoiler cover over variant covers that reveal plot on the day the comic is released. They can always take it off the next day.

At my LCS they had the reg Civil War 3 iss,and the McGuiness Variant next to it,but the owner was smart and had them turned away so you just saw the back cover, course you could ask about it,kinda wish more dealers would do that, saves the ending and gets customers talking with the owners more.
