Just curious, how many series has Captain America had? Length as well if possible?

Also if there are a lot, why were they canceled? Low sales or where some of them mini-series?

The new series, which is on issue #19 or #20 I guess. How is the #1 issue? Does it do a good job of providing background information on the character, how he got to the point he is now and what his place in the MU is?

That one was started at the same time as New Avengers right? So does it spin out of the events of Avengers Disassembled?

Thanks.

The first stories of Captain America were in the 1940s...
He was briefly (and somewhat unsuccessfully) revived in the 1950s during the red scare.
His silver age success came with his introduction in Avengers #4 (1963).
After a few trial balloon stories in other series, he was given his own ten page lead story (or back-up story) in Tales of Suspense (circa 1964-5) that ran from issue #59-99... a bout 3 or 4 years...
With issue #100, the title was changed to Captain America and it ran the whole book, with a nice recap of his origin. By issue #109, a full issue reprint retold the origin... and the story continued.

Eventually, that series was stalled, as all Marvel Heroes disappeared in the Onslaught event, and were Reborn in new series for only 12 issues.
After that, the series restarted with another #1... and the Heroes Returned.
Another series was lauched that I think was called Captain America and the Falcon... but it died about issue #15 about the time Dissembled occured.

So, the fourth and most recent series started at the time of Dissembled, but does not key into the events of that Avengers series. YES, the first issue fills you in with enough background and more is gathered along the way...

So if you are wondering if you should pick the current series (about 20 issues now) starting with #1, the answer is a resounding YES. Consider getting the Man Out of Time trade for the first story arc, but you'll want the second "Winter Soldier" trade as well. Also, pick up the 65th anniversary special that came out during this period also. It has important information for this continuing story arc as well...

Captain America Comics #1-78 (1941-1954)

Cap's had an ongoing title since 1968. None of the above volumes were canceled, they were just relaunched with a new #1 under a different banner. I believe the following titles were canceled because of sales, though.

Captain America & the Falcon #1-14 (2004)
Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1-12 (1998)

These were mini series
Blood and Glory #1-3 (1992) with Punisher
Captain America: Dead Men Running #1-3 (2002)
Captain America Special Edition #1-2 (1984)
Captain America: What Price Glory? #1-4 (2003)
Wolverine/Captain America #1-4 (2004)

Forgot one on your list;

Under mini's, there should be the

Adventures of Captain America #1-4(1991)GN
Fabian Nicieza and Kevin Magurie for the first three issues, can't remember the artist on the last one.

4 issue 48 page graphic novel mini-series retelling his origin and first battle with the Red Skull and some German Super Soldier fail-outs. Dunno where it fit's into continuity, but it does tie a bit into early stories in New Warriors, as one of the guys who was in the Project: Rebirth program with Steve Rogers became the head/founder of Genetech, which was the creators of Psionix.

I am one of the biggest Cap fans around. These lists are very good, but not quite complete, there are some one shots and minis ommitted, and also, it should be mentioned that Tales of Suspense 59-99 had two stories, one sharing Iron Man, and one starring Cap, until the volume was renamed Captain America with 100 (considered, 'volume 1' at Marvel, as the Golden Age books are under a different publishing name).

The one-shots left out were Captain America & Nick Fury: The Otherworld War, Captain America & Nick Fury: Blood Truce, Ghost Rider & Captain America: Fear, Captain America: The Medusa Effect, Marvel Comics: Captain America, Captain America: the Legend, and a Captain America's Collector's Preview. There was also the Captain America: Red, White & Blue hardcover special. I have all of the comics listed in my expansive Cap collection, but there could also be stuff I've missed.

Yeah man, trying to list Cap one shots is hard as all heck, theres been quite a few.

I'd say just go with listing Mini's and regulars.

Jest thought of another significant appearance.
With the parallel storyline of Cap trying to be hired by Sheild back in the Avengers main title, and Nick Fury fighting Hydra and the Yellow Claw over in Strange Tales, there were several guestar appearance with Nick Fury, especially the two part big-blackout story by Steranko in about Strange Tales about #159-162 or so.
