I've recently started reading comics again ,but i just buy the TPBs. I read comics in the early 90s and a lot from the late 80s. I stopped reading around when Maximum Clonage ended (I liked Scarlet Spider ,but I thought the story was stupid). So i was jw if anyone could recommend any.

note : these are the books i already own

Ultimate Spiderman vol 1-15
Spiderman Down among the Dead Men
Kraven's Last Hunt
Death of Gwen Stacy
Spiderman vs Venom

and i've ordered The Best of Spiderman HC vol 1. Havn't got that yet though.

Venomous/ The Last Stand- Since you already own "Down Amongst the Dead Men." These two TPBs continue that story as Spider-Man faces a new Venom, discovers who kidnapped Aunt May, and gets involved in one of the greatest battles of his life.

Spider-Man: Blue- A Jeph Loeb/ Tim Sale mini series about how Spider-Man met Gwen Stacy. Includes battles with the Green Goblin, Rhino, Lizard, two Vultures, and a mystery villain.

Wizard's Best of Spider-Man Hardcover- In addition to the second Venom storyline (already collected in Spider-Man VS Venom) this trade includes all time classics like "The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man" "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut" "The Death of Jean Dewolfe" and a fan favorite battle between Spider-Man, the Cobra, and a mystery villain.

The Essential Spider-Man Volumes 1-3: Lee/ Ditko's entire run on the book, followed by the best of Lee/ Romita. The most important runs on the character, and still amongst the best. These are the cheapest ways to get these issues, as long as you don't mind the black & white art (neither artist loses much in the translation IMO.)

One Small Break- Paul Jenkins's best work on the characters. Includes his three part Fusion epic (with probably the best new Spider-Man villain since Venom), a two part tragedy in which one villain wants Spider-Man to help kill him & Peter learns a family secret, a great Uncle Ben tale, and more.

Note- I believe the Best of SPider-Man hardcover you bought includes JMS's first seven issues on the book, and some assorted recent Spider-man books. If you like it, you should buy the next few volumes.

Thanks for the reply i've been considering ordering some of the books you mentioned. Never heard of One Small break ,and the Wizard's best hardcover looks really good. I've never gotten to read the Juggernaut story. I'm about to check amazon and mile high comics to see if i can find that wizards book.

It's honestly one (or five, depending how you look at it) five of the best Spider-Man stories ever, and a great introduction to the different eras of the character. I highly recommend it.

I ordered the books that you recommended but only the first volume of the essentials (not sure about the black and white thing). In that Wizard's collection who is Jean Dewolfe? Never heard of that name and doesn't come up in Wikipedia.

Will the "Death in the Family" arc ever be collected in Trade?

I read a review on it that sounded interesting, and can get past the bad art if it's good. Bit of a sucker for Norman :p

This should help a bit in terms of knowing what’s out there…

It wasn’t as big a distraction as I thought it might be. If you still find it distracting but you don’t feel like robbing a bank to pay for the Masterworks hardcovers then you may want to try your local Barnes and Noble (or check out their site) because they have a deal worked out with Marvel where they put out softcover versions of the Masterworks.

In that Wizard's collection who is Jean Dewolfe? Never heard of that name and doesn't come up in Wikipedia.

She’s a cop friend of Spidey’s. That’s all you really need to know going into the story.

The Paul Jenkins story? Yeah, nearly everything in his run has been traded by now. Really, it wasn't even one of his better stories in my mind. I’d recommend his “A Day in the Life”, “One Small Break”, “Trials and Tribulations”, “Final Curtain”, or even his “Daredevil/Spider-Man: Usual Suspects” (which is a little…different) instead if only because the stories don’t feel padded and the art doesn’t make my eyes bleed. Great non-Spidey trades of his include “Inhumans” and the first “Sentry” (okay, that one is some Spider-Man in it) story.

I checked out barnes and nobles for the Masterworks. Only 12.95 for the paperbacks ,so got that instead.

I'm thinking about getting Saga of The Alien Costume (252-259; w Tom DeFalco; a Ron Frenz, Rick Leonardi).

Abd what was this all about The Other: Evolve or Die (Super-size hardcover; Amazing 525-528, Marvel Knights 19-22, Friendly Neighborhood 1-4; w Peter David, Reginald Hudlin, J. Michael Straczynski; a Pat Lee, Mike Wieringo, Mike Deodato) I read the short explination ,but it seems weird. Was it any good?

Dont get the Other!!Its a 12 issue story that could have been done in 4 or 5 issues. I'm sure you could find reviews of it on the internetor here on the CBR.

Also this one only contains issues Amazing Spider-Man #256-259. the regular one is 252-259

Yes there is; I own it. It's called "Spider-Man: Revalations". It's all 4 parts of the "Revalations" story with over 10 bonus pages for the final part of the story. There's only one problem though; it was printed back in the late 90's so it's out of print now. Your best chance is getting it second hand from ebay or something.

Beastie's Sugestions:

Spider-man: Blue -- great retelling of the Gwen and Peter relationship
Marvel Knights Spider-man: Venomous -- continues from down among the dead men
Marvel Knights Spider-man: The Last Stand -- continues what you already have
Spider-man Legends/Visionaries: Todd McFarlane Vol. 1-3 -- good Spider-man era
Spider-man: Torment -- sequel to Kraven's Last Hunt in a way
40 Years Of The Amazing Spider-Man (DVD) -- not a TPD but it's 40 years of Spider-man!!
The Essentials -- if you don't mind black and white
Masterworks -- well worth the $$$$There's many more but that's off the top of my head.

I didn't really mind The Other. It was a bit out there but not as bad as people say. Great deal too, all 12 issues for only 30 bucks. And The Sinister 12 Arc is in Marvel Knights Spider-Man: The Last Stand.

It’s worth noting that there are two Spider-Man TPBs called “Revelations”. The first ends the clone saga with Osborn’s return, baby May’s birth & “death”/abduction, and Ben’s death. The second “Revelations” trade is also the second JMS trade and it has both the famous story where Aunt May confronts Peter about being Spider-Man and the infamous 9/11 story.

Do any of those listed or anything out there collect the Spider-man story where he battles with Sinister Twelve?

The Sinister Twelve story is reprinted in both “The Last Stand” TPB and the Marvel Knights HC. I’d recommend the hardcover since the three parts the story was split into felt very artificial because it was a one year long story. Plus it’ll end up costing you the same (sometimes less online) to get the one HC as it will to get three trades.
