This is one hilarious news report. Lol.

Muslims worry about Superman (http://democracyfrontline.org/news/?p=1122)

In all fairness though, we (US) shouldn't be the ones to talk:

War of the Worlds- is real? (http://www.transparencynow.com/welles.htm)

Of course the War of the Worlds thing was in the 1930's and didn't feature one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world.

I question the validity of the story, given the source (a site which seems bent on stirring up anti-Muslim sentiment.)

No, I could well see this actually happening.

During the first Iraqi War, there was some Tokyo Rose woman broadcasting Iraqi propoganda to the US troops there... and this one woman said "Go home! All your wives are cheating on you while you are here! They are sleeping with Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, Bart Simpson!"

To be fair, the Burt Reynolds part was probably true.

Indeed. It's linked to Little Green Footballs (whose honesty or ability to accurately process information I don't have much reason to trust), Front Page Magazine (which applies all the dogmatic thinking of Leninism to neoconservativism), but most importantly Jihad Watch and Dhimmi Watch run by noted race-baiting hack Robert Spencer. (Hey! He's also a columnist for Front Page Mag! How about that?)

Really, when this is covered by a legitimate and reliable news source I might give it some credence.

ok, now i'm sure some of you have at least one Muslim friend. (if you don't you can befriend me) Have you ever, in your life heard him/her refer to anyone as an infidel. That one word is the tip off that this is not a legitimate article. They quite possibly have the Onion as their resource lead.

I think the only people who believe this story to be true are those who wish the story to be true.

I believe this story is true. I know how stupid people can be. If you don't believe me, YOU try living with my little bratty brother for awhile!

Well having read the link again, turns out that it is true since there was a link to said clarification on the website for an actual newspaper in the United Arab Emirates (don't know anything about the paper itself).

My reaction to the story was based on the seeming acceptability of blatant anti-Arab racism (couched in terms of being about Islam, not that religious prejudice is any better) since 9/11, which I've seen all too often in comments made during the Parisian riots as well as the relentless focus on the riots in the Mid East and ignoring the largely peaceful protests that predominated in Malaysia and Indonesia (which have Muslim majorities) as well as India (which has a very large Muslim population). (Nevermind in Europe or North America.) That and the groundswell of racist bilge in commentary on Islam, including this site itself.

If this happened in say the U.S. or India, would anyone have bothered to have labelled the headline "Christian readers worry about Superman's flight over New York" or "Hindu readers worry about Superman's flight over Bombay"? They make it about religion in order to whip up hatred and stoke prejudice. Just look at the headlines on that site. "Romancing Muzzi style" as a title for a story about rape in which religion is not mentioned at all? (But the attacker consuming large amounts of alcohol is.)

Does "Non-Scientoligists Worry about Tom Cruise's Flight over Oprah's Couch" count, Adam? :)

I think Snopes has debunked that one.

Funny that exact same story was circulating during World War II with the names changed. Back then the fictional fornicator was Mickey Mouse.

I don't know. Is there an actual context for this line?

I think Snopes has debunked that one.

They have (http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/radio/baghdad.htm). In fact it originated as a Johnny Carson joke.

Really? That totally sucks. I remember hearing about it on KFI. I think it was Bill Handel who had reported it too. Well, when yer wrong, yer wrong.

Still think my lil bratty brother is an idiot though.

I can't believe sombody would think Superman is for real, but i can believe some may burn american flags an shout about it.

Like they did recently when a small paper in Denmark publiced some kind of funny pictures of Mohammed (this was a very smal paper with maybe 5-10.000 readers only), they started to burn every flag from scandinavia and threatned to kill us all etc, and it went on for months.

There was a lot of apologetic from our countrys, i don't get that, musslim laws is not valid here, i like to be able to say whatever i want about god or Allah or whatever without being killed for it.
There should never have been any apologys for that, let them rave about it, i haven't even seen the pictures.

That was mostly fuelled by the Iranian government. When the paper actually first hit stands, there were some peaceful protests by Danish Muslims, and that was that. Then, months later, Iran needed a daily hate, so they circulated the pictures, plus a few extra-racist ones that weren't part of the original article, and kicked up a firestorm.

I guess you are right, and there was musslims that made false drawings to show what "we" had done to them, just to fuel the fire.

I have never done anything agains musslims or ever insult a muslim, it really made me sad that they blamed "me" also for what that paper did, that they would kill me if i shoved up, makes you think, crazy people.

There is of course extreme people everywhere not just extreme muslims.

The war in Japan ended on August 15, 1945.

Tom Selleck was born January 29, 1945. Burt Reynolds was born February 11, 1936. Neither of them did their first movie until the war was over.

I do not know the exact date that Bart Simpson was created but his creator Matt Groeing wasn’t born until February 15, 1954.

I find it hard to believe that Tokyo Rose was really mentioning these people. :p

BTW Tokyo Rose’s real name was Iva Toguri D’Anquino and she was a citizen of the United States of America during the war!

Non-specific deity versus Superman.

During the first Iraqi War, there was some Tokyo Rose woman broadcasting Iraqi propoganda to the US troops there... She meant "Tokyo Rose" as an adjective (a traitor broadcasting to the troops of her own country to destroy their morale), not the real thing...

Course, nowadays most every channel out there does the same thing...

Moslems believe that no matter what country they live in, we have to obey their rules!

(a traitor broadcasting to the troops of her own country to destroy their morale)

Actually, Tokyo Rose was probably several women, possibly all Japanese nationally as well as ethnically. There was one Japanese-American woman who was accused of being Tokyo Rose, but she was eventually cleared when her accusers admitted to commiting perjury.

Okay ... I could take the mature way of handling this and do what Samurai and TC did ...

OR I could be snarky and say ... "Tokyo Rose, as used in my post? This is called a METAPHOR. As in, 'A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison' Now, If I had said "Some Tokyo-Rose-LIKE woman, it would be a SIMILE, as in 'A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by like or as,'. The key term to look for was the adjective 'some', describing the TYPE of 'Tokyo Rose woman', which should have driven the point across that I was not referring to THE Tokyo Rose woman.'" :p
