View Full Version : Choices for Potential Future Top Five Lists!
Jeremy A. Patterson
07-19-2006, 07:45 AM
I have liked the Top Five series of Comics Should Be Good for awhile, & I have a few suggestions for future lists that would appeal to Brian Cronin:
*Top Five Worst Costumes of any X-Men member that could be a challenge (To counter the Storm list of last week)
*Top Five Comic Books From the 1980s That You Never Read (With the recent 1980s Nostalgia craze, such a list would be a natural!)
*Top Five Weird Variations of Archie
*Top Five Animated TV Shows That Are Least Likely To Get A Comic Book Series
*Top Five Oddest Comic Book Heroes of the 1960s
I will have more soon!

Ha!
Fun thread idea, Jeremy.
Something I was, myself, interested in was a more indy-themed Top Five. I couldn't think of a good one myself (as the field is so broad that I wouldn't be able, in good conscience, say that I knew enough to give any sort of definitive list).

So, basically you're asking for 5 Hal Jordan covers then....

Some of my suggestions do have some indie-type inclusions in there!
"Top Five Comic Books of the 1980s That You Have Never Read" Can include plenty of non-Marvel/DC stuff in the running!
"Top Five Weird Variations of Archie" has some choice weird cuts, including DC's Swing With Scooter. For more on him, go to: www.dialbforblog.com
"Top Five Oddest Heroes of the 1960s" will prove that Marvel & DC were not the only companies churning out the long-underwear guys in that decade: Harvey (Jigsaw, Spyman, Tiger Boy, & even reruns of the original Black Cat), Archie (The Web, The Jaguar, the super-heroic makeover of The Shadow, Fly Man, The Mighty Crusaders, & even Pureheart The Powerful & Friends), M.F. Enterprises (The notorious 'Split!" version of Captain Marvel), Lightning (Fatman, The Human Flying Saucer, Super Green Beret, & Captain Shazam), Dell (Super-Frankenstein, Super-Dracula, Super-Werewolf, Brain Boy, Nukla, & The Fab Four), & Charlton (Son of Vulcan, Mercury Man, The Shape, & Sinistro, Boy Fiend) all did some too!
See you later!

How about Top Five Whiny Bastard, er, Emo comics.
Or SANDMAN take your pick
Pssst.
It's not "emo" if the audience is aware that the main character is a whiney bitch, and the writer obviously INTENDS for the audience to think the main character is a whiney bitch.
Sandman is anti-emo.
Anyway, top five:
Clumsy/Unlikely: Or ANY Jeff Brown comics but "Be a Man."
It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken/The Playboy.
Goodbye, Chunky Rice/Blankets.
I almost wanna stick "Fun Home" in here, but it's almost too cold to be emo. Plus the narrator has a reason to be all upset, while TRUE emo is about having the same experiences as everybody else, but being whinier.
So I got three. (All of which I really liked, BTW.)

5 Best Comic Book Logos.
We should get (comic blogger) Bully for that. He's all about that kinda stuff.
5 Best Comic Book Romances/Marriages.
#1: Doom and Doom.
5 Best (Worst?) Legion of Super Heroes Members OR Rejects.
Y'all better leave Infectious Lass alone.
5 wierdest Red Kryptonite Transformations of a Kryptonian.
# 1: The mini Superman that came out of Superman's palm. Or else that Alan Moore Supreme story where the Krypto analouge had sex with every female dog on earth at super speed.
5 Worst Austen Stories :p
Did you read the Romeo and Juliet with Hillbilly Mutants one? I loved that comic. More than anything Morrison did on the title. Makes everything else he does forgiveable. (I'm SO getting kicked off the blog for that. Also not writing anything in three months.)
Also I was really impressed by the four-or-five issues I read of Superman:Metropolis.

Tor Five Worst Hero Costumes of the 1940s (Well, the 1940s were a time for weird costumes that have not aged well!)
Top Five Worst comic Books of the 1960s.

Here are some more suggestions:
* Top Five Worst DC Comics Heroes (Face the facts, DC had plenty of crappy heroes in addition to the good ones!)
*Top Five Worst Super-Hero Cartoons (They do not even have to feature comic book characters!)
And I have plenty of suggestions for lists based on RetroJunk's 'Five Video Games You Play In Hell' (Which, in a fitting comic book tie-in, had 'Superman 64' for the Nintendo 64 as #4. The other five games are: Waterworld [Virtual Boy, #5], The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past [Super NES; #3.5; This list must have been made by a Bizarro!], Fisher Price's Perfect Fit [NES; #3], Super 3-D Noah's Ark [Super NES; #2], & E.T. Top Five Previews. Remember how, when they were going to start up a new series, they'd put a, like, an eight-page or sixteen-page mini-story in the middle of some other comic?
Ones I remember fondly: the Amethyst preview in LSH, the Blue Devil preview in Fury of Firestorm and the All-Star Squadron preview in JLA.
Sometimes the preview would be not for a new comic but for some lame line of toys, like M.A.S.K. or whatever it was. No freaking thanks.

Well, I liked the three Top Fives in one day stunt Brian did last week, as one of them (Top Five Worst Psylocke Costumes) hearkened back to one of the very first suggestions I made in this thread!
What other older suggestions could be worth a chance to appear here?
Here are a few of them:

StrikeForce Albert's Top Five Comic Book Mullets
PennyWisdom's Top Five 'Great Concept, Poor Execution' Characters
Strannik's Top Five 90s Characters
And four of my other older suggestions:

As a comic fan who pretty much missed the nineties, I'm surprised there were more than one or two of either of these. Lemme see:
Warblade from WILDCATS and the current Wolverine Lass who's name escapes me right now. And I only got the one for question 2.

Ripclaw from Cyberforce comes to mind. There was Feral and Wolfsbane in X-Force and X-Factor. I'd throw Sabretooth in there. Does Lobo count?
As for Question 2 I can think of Grifter, Gambit, John Constantine, Marv, Dwight, Hellboy (who smoked in the 1950s) and Nomad. I'm debating whether Punisher counts.
The MAXX and Alan Moore's WildCATS. Was anything else any good?
Savage Dragon got really good after issue 7. The James Robinson/Travis Charest WildCATs was fun. Keith Giffen and Dave Johnson (one of those rare times he did interiors) did two awesome Superpatriot minis. 1963 was good even though it was unfinished.
A lesser man would say "the writing" and "the art."
Or something to do with Neil Gaiman and Miracle Man.
Personally I'd pick Spawn hanging the bloated corpse of a child molesting ice cream man (with popsicle sticks jammed into his body) in Sam and Twitch's office.
Or the infamous Spawn vs. The Klan issue where he turned the Grand Wizard into a black man (who was later hung) and McFarlane named two of the Klansman Petey and Johnny.
Yeah I spent Christmas break reading old Image comics and feeling regret over my mispent youth. Seriously, a complete run of Team Youngblood... I know.

Top Five D-List Superteam Spotlights
There has been many super-teams that rarely get any respect from their peers. They rarely (if ever) get titles of their own, but they sometimes get some sort of star treatment.
Among the great examples of this include:
*Justice League International Quarterly #17 (The Global Guardians truly get the spotlight for the first (& only) time, getting the cover AND the lead feature of this issue!)
*Legion of Super-Heroes (vol. 3) Annual #3 (The first appearance of the second Legion of Substitute Heroes!)
*Charlton Bullseye (1980s) #4 (The one-&-only appearance of The Vanguards. Some super-teams are D-List because they are failed try-outs. This team had great potential!)
*Blue Ribbon Comics (1980s) #9 (Agents of Atlantis. This team could have filled the void left by the break-ups of the Ultra-Men & the Terrific Three!)
*Scary Tales #40 (The only appearance of Charlton's Dragon Force!)
*Star Masters #1 (The only appearace of The Women's Outer Space Patrol!)
*Femforce #58 to #60 (This three-parter was more of a set-up for the second Sentinels of Justice team than a Femforce storyarc!)
*Strikeforce: Morituri #1 (This first issue focus as much on the Strikeforce's precursor, The Black Watch, as on the Strikeforce themselves. The titular team do not even get their powers until issue #2, & in issue #3, they get their costumes!)
How do you think?

4) Fantastic Four Annual #3. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby try to attend the wedding of Reed and Sue, but are stopped at the front door by SHIELD agents.
