View Full Version : Question About the MTV Spider-Man Series

Did the MTV Spider-Man series follow a previous continuity? I ask because there some things in that show that didn't make sense to me. For one thing, Norman Osborn is already dead, Spider-Man and Kraven have met before and the show used the Kingpin from the Daredevil movie. At first I thought it was loosly based on the movie continuity (which would explain why Norman is dead at the start of the series and Harry hatred from Spidey) but in this series Spider-Man has fought Kraven before and using the Kingpin from the Daredevil movie kinda threw me off.

Yeah, I thought it was based after the movie too. After watching it though, I have to say that it was an original take on the Spidey mythos. I don't think it was based off anything.

The show was cancelled. It had a 13 episode season.

The movie definitely provided a loose background. Hence, Norman being dead and Peter, MJ, and Harry in college. Think of it in the same way that Superman Returns is a "thematic sequel" to the original movies.
As for Kraven, I'm sure that's something they would have gotten around to explaining if the show had continued. Maybe a flashback to Spidey on his first night patrol, knocking out some idiot in a lion costume with a flick of his finger.
Using the movie Kingpin was a neat touch, I thought. They even got Michael Clarke Duncan to do the voice. :)

When you put it that way it makes perfect sense. the series being a "thematic sequel" to the original movie.
As for Kraven, viewing the series as a "thematic sequel" then I could assume that there battle from the video game adaption of the Spider-Man movie would be their first encounter.

Neat idea. Who else did he fight in that first game? Shocker, right?

Shocker, Vulture and Scorpion were additional villains in the game.

Gosh, I haven't played it in such a long time. If I remember correctly, Vulture and Scorpion also were bosses.

That's right, for some reason I thought they were in the second movie game. I forgot how different the sequel was from the original.

If I remember correctly, Rhino, Black Cat, and Mysterio were in the Spider-Man 2 game. Shocker made a return appearance.

I really think this show was a lot worse than the older 90s SM animated show, i understand why it was canceled.

I agree the 90's show was much better. I think the main reason it was Cancled was mainly becaues it was on MTV. I think this lead to it not being able to develope a core audiance with both kids, and comic fans.

I really enjoyed the show to be honest. Was pretty disappointed when it was canceled. Especailly since it was really getting good. I think the episodes are out on dvd. When I first saw it though I figured it was more of a bridging series between the Spider-man 1 and Spider-man 2 films.
I agree, having the movie version of Kingpin from the Daredevil film was a nice touch. :) MCD did a pretty good job with the role, black or white. Kingpin is one of those characters I think that as long as the build is correct and the acting is good any race could play him, gotta be male though.

The 90s toon gets a leg up simply for benefit of having so many more episodes, and having unfettered access to every Spidey idea ever.
But comparing the breakneck animation of the MTV toon to the 90s toon reusing that same shot of Spider-Man swinging 50,000 times...no contest.

The second game had Rhino in his ultimate costume, Mysterio, Black Cat, Shocker, and if you passed the game you could also fight Calypso. Kraven was in the first game but only as an exclusive to XBOX.
As for the MTV series, it's my personal belief that it failed becuase they marketed it to the wrong audience. Why do MTV viewers want to see a superhero show on their tweenie-drama-reality TNA channel. The days of Beavis & Butthead, Aeon Flux, and a time when they actually showed music videos is over.
Had they chosen to market it on a channel like FOX, WB, or Cartoon Network and aimed at a wider audience, I belive it would have done better. It certainly wasn't as bad as that wretched Spider-Man Unlimited show that tried to market in on the heels of Batman Beyond.
Edit- If you have Winamp and a broadband connection, I believe one of their Shoutcast Tv channels plays the MTV Spider-Man cartoon.

While not bad... I'm sure you remember watching a lot of blatantly reused animation sequences. Remember when Carnage busted out of prison? For about a second they reuse the animation of Venom busting through the wall. You can even see that Carnage turns into Venom.... and then back into Carnage.

I only saw a few episodes of Spider-Man Unlimited, but I'll tell ya one thing it was much better than that crap animated series in 2003. That show was a discgrace to the Spider-Man name. Harry was blone, BLONDE for God's sake, Mary Jane looked like a bloody goth, they made Conners a very arrogant and lonely man and Max Dillion was a college friend of Peter's. And they made some punk wannbe reporter as a love interest for Peter. She was such a terrible character that I'm glad she was put in a coma at the end of the series and might never wake up. Apart from Kingpin, (Who was the only good thing about that show.) Lizard, Electro Kraven and Silver Sable every other villian was in a high tech suit or a robot suit or had some crazy device. That's not Spider-Man. Where was Doc Ock, Vulture, Mysterio, Scorpion, Shocker, Rhino or the Chameleon and all the rest of Spidey's enemies. That whole show was a sack of crap.

It seemed like they tried to force the characters into being too modern and cool for my tastes. They practially beat you over the head with the fact that they were using ipods and laptops and all that stuff.
Now I don't mind them havfing it, but they don't need to talk about it so obviously allthe time.

I could've done without them going on and on and on about how great flavored coffee is every single episode.

I thought that the show on MTV was really good. I liked how it had a different twist on some of the old characters. I didn't like how some of the characters looked, though, a lot of them were stretched out and didn't look normal. I was never into the comics as a kid but I loved the 90's TV show. It is still my favorite cartoon to this day.

I liked MTV version of Spiderman it was a mixture of 616 and Ultimate Spider I think. I liked it way better than the 90's series. I always thought the 90's series made him weaker than what he was. And he seem to wine alot in that series. The MTV version give him some edge and just enough twist to keep you watch.
MTV didn't promote it well enough that why it was cancelled. I caught the last 2 shows myself and have to go buy the DVD to see the complete series.

That was the stylised look but I agree it could get annnoying at times. More with the males then the females.

The DVD is nice because when the series was actually on TV I only saw 2 or 3 episodes because it never seemed to be on at the same time. I never knew when it was on but I bought the DVD when it first came out and loved watching it. I would recomend it to anyone who like Spider-man

plus neil patrick harris. fricken perfect for the role.
anyway, it got really annoying when all i saw was the same two episodes repeated and not the other 11. anyway, a second season would have kicked the first seasons @$$ when the writers saw how silly half the show was, and how kick@$$ the other half of the shows were.
pete flipping over some random guy who was picking on max dillon, and then letting himself get punched in the head=perfect characterization
even if you think of how insane it is to have someone flip over your head and not see the oddity in that. it's not like bullys are supposed to be geniuses.

Well, to be fair, the show was trying to stay in movie continuity as much as possible. They knew Doc Ock would be next, so they didn't include him in the show.
I thought it was cool, better action and animation than the 90's show, but not as good in other areas. Eve was such a rotten voice actress.

Kraven was a boss only in the "X-Box" version of the SPider-Man movie video game, in case someone with a PS2/ Gam Cube version wonders why they can't remember him.

Spider-Man should never ever be a 3D cartoon ever again. The animation was horrible. It's just not Spider-Man. You should be ashamed of yourself comparing that hack of crap to the legendary 90's cartoon. And you call yourself 90'sCartoonMan. :D

Spider-Man looked better in the 3D animated series than he did in the 90s series. Another great thing about the MTV series is that it never reused the same animations. I swear, each time the Lizard appeared on the show they reused the same scene from the first episode when he charge toward Spider-Man or use his tail whip. I wouldn't really call the 90s show legendary. Yea it was good but not good enough to be in legendary status like the Batman and X-Men animated series.

I enjoyed the MTV spider-man mainly cause it focuses on a older audience and actually have spidey punch someone in the face unlike the crap from the 90's where all he does is tackle and web people. MTV is so damn uncool for cancelling this show.

Don't count out 3D animation, though, maybe you just need to get used to it.
