View Full Version : Does This Sound Ridiculous To Anyone Else?

Last Sunday I was at a baptism for my cousin's baby boy. During the party afterwards, there were a large group of young children there, about 4-8 I think. Anyway, one woman was basically looking after them most of the time, she really likes kids. She spent most of the time playing games with them and stuff like that.

Anyway, at one point I saw her trying to teach these children how to play Spin The Bottle. She actually put them all in a circle, got a bottle, and told them whoever the bottle landed on they would have to kiss. And she was going to leave them to this unattended.

Anyway, one of the boy's mothers heard what was going on and told her to stop it. The woman answered,

"Oh what's the matter, they're just kids, it'll be cute watching them kiss."

To which, the mother replied, "Yeah, but there's twice as many boys as there are girls. What if the bottle lands on a boy? They might not understand how it's supposed to work. Do you want to see to boys kissing?"

And so the woman decided to end the game.

Now, does this seem as ridiculous to you as it did to me?

I'd be more scared of the kids getting the idea that it's ok for cousins to kiss

The reasoning, yes. But I agree with the fact they probably shouldn't be playing the game.

"What's wrong with a bit of strip poker? They're only kids! It'll be cute!"

Some things just aren't appropriate for that age.

I think it depends on how all those kids were baptized. :p

What happens when the kids start playing Doctor at the next Baptism ? ;)

Probably:

"Oh, it's alright for the boys to play doctor with the girls, but if the boys start playing with each other then we'll have to stone the little gays."

Probably:

"Oh, it's alright for the boys to play doctor with the girls, but if the boys start playing with each other then we'll have to stone the little gays."

And then, when little Billy grows up and graduates from medical school, he'll get his first malpractice lawsuit in no time at all for refusing to treat another man. His defense? "Pfft! Do I look gay to you?"

No. Spin the Bottle isn't meant for children those ages anyway. And at that age, most boys wouldn't want to be kissing either boys or girls. Most girls probably would feel about the same.

BECAUSE THEY'VE ALL GOT COODIES!!!

It's not the most horrific thing in the world for the kids, but it does suggest that perhaps this woman's judgement of what's appropriate is a bit skewed!

I think it would have been ok if the Surgeon General had been there handing out condoms and explaining how to use them.

That's remarkable sensible thinking. Good idea!

Probably:

"Oh, it's alright for the boys to play doctor with the girls, but if the boys start playing with each other then we'll have to stone the little gays."

"And then we stone the harlot for trying to encourage out of wedlock relations. And then we find and stone anyone working Sundays. And then we should stone everyone who works in banks. And then we should stone everyone else."

Because you just can't stone one set of "heretics in the face of God."

And you know what? Phelps would be pleased, and God would be saying "I didn't have anything to do with this. This guy is just using a book to his own means."

We don't have a Surgeon General who'd do THAT anymore. The kids would get a stern lecture on the benefits of choosing abstinence though!

...of course, someone would PROBABLY have to explain what abstinence is... and what they're abstaining FROM...:p

Not necessarily.

This reminds me of a story of a woman who wanted to make poker a girl scout merit badge.

Her reasoning?

So that, when they are young adults, they can hold their own in strip poker.

It'd be different if the kids had doen this on their own...but its the idea that they'd been coerced into it by an adult i find sinister. What sort of sick pleasure was this woman getting out of watchign 6 year olds french?

Why not line up some tequila and play drinking games? It'll be cute!!!!

It just shows how ignorant this woman is...pseudo child sex is fine....but homosexual pseudo child sex is SICK!!!!

Reverse the roles...if it was a man doing this you'd automatically assume paedophile wouldn't you?

Eh, I don't think she was going to have them French Kiss and deep throat each other - she was probably thinking they'd do the Hallmark pose - kisses on the cheek.

Huh. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/overreaction)

Yes, the woman shouldn't have left the children to a prepubescent sexual game unattended. However, I doubt the nature of the game was really explained to them. "Whoever this bottle lands on, you've gotta' kiss." As Val said, with children, all this would mean is a kiss on the cheek. Nothing sexual or (Heaven forbid!) homosexual about it.

Of course, it was a bad idea, but the other mother's reaction was just as stupid.

The fact that there is an adult leading the proceedings gives it a bizarre touch, but the game itself is patently innocuous. Surely I'm not the only one who played spin the bottle at that age?

This story is really about puritan prudishness and excessive concern for what kids are up to.

That woman is a good example of hiding homophobia inside potentially justified condemnations. It makes it difficult for others to critize the homophobic attitude, because doing so can create the impression that one is in favor of pedophilia (which is not the case, of course).

It's an old trick.

Many people find Anne Geddes portraits "cute" and they're of naked babies wearing flowers around their necks and whatnaught. Hence, I'd imagine a lot of people probably would find a child kissing another child on the cheek as "cute" - otherwise there wouldn't be old greeting cards with pictures of that on them around.

I think Anne Geddes secretly hates babies.

"That's right kid, coo. All the while the bonnet gets tighter and tighter and oh I need to have a lie down now."

I am personally not a fan of Anne Geddes. The worst was when my mother decided to redecorate the family bathroom and put Anne Geddes portraits in the bathroom. Like I really want photos of babys watching me while I'm trying to take a dump.
