Love and Rockets! It's one of the most amazing comics ever, well I think so atleast. It's done by two brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, they each have half of an issue to do their own stories. The two bulkiest stories are orgonized into two big ass hardcovers, Palomar by Gilbert and Locas by Jaime. Alan Moore said this about Jaime, "Jaime’s art balances big white and black spaces to create a world of nuance in between, just as his writing balances our big human feelings and our small human trivias to generate its incredible emotional power. Quite simply, this is one of the twentieth century's most significant comic creators at the peak of his form, with every line a wedding of classicism and cool." Don't let that put you off Gilberts stuff though, its equally as amazing.

So go effing buy it. :evilsmile

Another really great comic is Stray Bullets! It's just got this really great feel to it. I can't describe it, but I get immense pleasure out of reading Stray Bullets. Sometimes I crack a smile while reading it, not because its funny (which it is at times), but because its that good. Go buy this too.

Another good'un is Demo! Demo just puts out this great emotion from every page. Even though each issue is self-contained I felt that I knew each character like I'd been reading them years worth of issues.

Damn, comics are great right now.

If you are looking for a horror book, From Hell (http://topshelfcomix.com/catalog.php?type=12&title=226) may be a good book for you. It is currently out of print. But a new printing is coming in August or you may be able to find it in some comic shops or book stores.

I would HIGHLY recommend all of the following:

Like you said, if you are looking for something with mysticism, magic, and mythology in it like Hellblazer, then books like these should do the trick:

Snakewoman and Devi from Virgin comics are both new series that you can easily jump onto as they have both just started with issue 1's coming out recently. They are both solid reads with fantastic art.

The Marquis from Oni is a fantastic Victorian era horrow/crime title.

BPRD from Dark Horse.

Revere from Alias, also just starting with an issue 1 having just come out. Revolutionary action with a macabre twist thrown in. Paul Revere, werewolf hunter.

For your superhero action needs, look no further than:

Invincible from Image. Quite possibly the best superhero comic on the shelves today. It is a fantastically fun ride of superhero antics and the human dilemmas that come hand in hand with having superpowers. It's what Spider-man should be.

Cla$$War from Com.X. A phenomenal superhero title that won Best Indie Superhero Comic from Wizard. BEAUTIFUL early work from Trevor Hairsine(Captain America, Ultimate Nightmare) and Travel Foreman(Ares). HIGHLY Recommended.

If you want anymore recommendations, I'm FILLED with them. Just let me know :)

First off I would recomend: Teenagers From Mars. It's an 8 issue mini about a town called Mars, starring a guy named Macon who is trying his best to produce a zombie comic while dodging the law and a townwide comic book prohibition. He meets up with other like minded individuals and forms the CBLA Comic Book Liberation Army. The whole book is really good, and has a positive message against censorship and that parents have bigger fish to fry than comics.
Second, I would recomend any of the Sin City mini series. All crime noir and pulp type reads slapped together with about as many bullets you can think of, and some of the most gruesome death scenes in comics.
Third, Hard Boiled. Another quality Frank Miller book with outstanding art by Geoff Darrow.
Although I have not read any of this series, Strangers in Paradise has been recomended above and beyond by many people I know.
Any Hellboy books are also heavy on quality and story telling. Mignola does a lot of research for his books.
Hero Happy Hour is truly a fun read. Formerly called Superhero Hapy Hour, the creator was sued by both Marvel and DC, as they both claimed to have invented the term superhero.
I will post more when I remember the names of a few other books I picked up at Wizard World LA 2005.

I'd recommend The Black Coat from Ape Entertainment. It's a new series (only 3 issues to date), so it shouldn't be too hard to track down. It's an historical horror title set during the War of Independence. It features monsters, secret societies, and swashbuckling, while simultaneously presenting a realistic depiction of the era.

Well, obviously I'm darn tempted to pimp my own book here, but before I do I'll recommend UK indie anthology Event Horizon. --> http://www.mamtor.com

It sells for a tenner at most of the cons' I've seen it at, which is about $18 ... I think ?

Anyway, you could always go for my book "Monkeys with Machineguns", which is now on Amazon ...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1897290012/

which is clearly a shameless plug (I did say I was tempted). If you want to know more about the book, check out some of the reviews we've been getting ...

OK, pimping over. Normal service will now resume ...

The lines have blurred so much between indies and mainstream....it all depends on what exactly the genre you are looking for is.....LOCAL seems to be getting a lot of buzz.....Mouse Guard...definately...I don't really consider VIRGIN Comics indy but I guess they are...

If you like manga, Junji Ito's horror collections are all pretty good. Tomie, Spiral and Gyo are all creepy as hell.

ACTION PHILOSOPHERS from Evil Twin Comics (http://www.eviltwincomics.com/) - but only if you're interested in reading your philosophy in a distilled fashion, with the occasional brute force in terms of the way they handle a few of the concepts. Well, less a comic read and more a read straight up.

The best independent book today is for me The Phantom (then again it is in my nick :D ). Adventure, fun, mystery and excitement, which should appeal to anybody really. Mike "Lions Tigers and Bears" Bullock is writing the regular series for Moonstone Books, and a vast array of special Phantom projects have been announced, as well as the recent 100-page re-telling of the Phantom's origin, a stunning graphic novel called "LEGACY".

Eightball, pretty much anything by Drawn and Quarterly, King Cat.

I dunno, the internet killed indy comics.

Dark Horse, Image, etc. are hardly indy by my definition, but they do put out some excellent material.

I would second DEMO. The stories are so human and poignant.

I would also recommend the book BLANKETS, a coming of age autobiographical account of a teenager's life with his family, his friends, and the choices he makes about the one he loves. Very good.

Actually, indie comics are more plentiful AND lucrative today than they ever have been in the past.

True story.
