Good question.
With out commentary, Byrne's art has been the most commented reason for reluctance in picking up the issue.
Have I said somewhere I loved the issue yet? Loved loved loved

Think he's done some issues of Birds of Prey ?

Eddy Barrows did the main story in last years Batman Villains Secret Files, as well as guest-art for some issues of Birds of Prey (#85, #87, & #88, I think) and Week 8 of 52.

Maybe, but the fact that it's not Ray Palmer has also been given as a reason for not picking it up.
I'm still waiting for my issue to arrive in the post, so I'll refrain from commenting on the contents.

Byrne's actually the reason I started reading Gail's stuff. I decided to check out his Action run and liked the writing enough to give her Birds of Prey a look (despite really not being a fan of Benes' style). They're both the reason I gave Atom a look, and I loved it. I'll probably keep reading even if there's a new artist, but I'll be disappointed if Byrne's gone.

I don't get why people don't like Byrnes art. I really liked what he did in the Atom.

I'll pick it up now. Frankly Bryne's been phoning in his artwork for ages, recycling Superman panels in his last Superman run with Gail. And with all the guff he's said about his displeasure with Superman Returns and his bailing out on the Superman Returns one-shots, I'd say a change like this is what's needed for the title. The stigma of Bryne's bullshittery can be bad and this is a clean break the book needs to get away from it all.
I'm happy to see this as a change in the right direction. Byrne's artwork was the reason I stayed away from this. I love the Grant Morrison concept but the recycled artwork was the reason my 2.99 went somewhere else.

I must be one of the very few people who is willing to overlook Byrne's ... well, somewhat nutty comments elsewhere...and just look at his work. I think Gail really works well with him, and the two of them told a good story together.
I hope Byrne maybe gets his act together, cuz he can still deliver. It's a shame that his outspokenness is costing a number of people a really good look at a really good comic.
Keep up the good work, Gail. I'll still be reading.
Uhm ... Hey, why didn't Scott take over as artist? He's still too busy?

It's not Byrne's opinions that keep me away from his work. It's his work that keeps me away. I've never, ever liked his art, no matter the inker. He's just so flat & stale.
Fun, FUN story, though. I like how he says, 'screw the secret identity, we're gonna save the world.'

I rather liked Byrne's art on Atom. He's a looney, sure, but sometimes he still delivers the money shots.

Please don't EVER use the phrase 'money shots' when referring to Byrne.
I now am instilled with a visual only shattered with years of therapy.

Gail actually made me enjoy a Liefield comic. To ME, that's the sign of a GREAT writer. She can overcome ANYTHING! (I'm not joking)
I'm not sure if Gail would enjoy that particular compliment, but it's a very high one from me.
You know ... I always wonder about the silliest things .... like that cover of Teen Titans ... whose idea was it to have on that cover "Come on... you know you want it...!"

No..your not the only one,Bree. I feel the same way about ALL artists. Musicians,Writers,Artists,whatever...i judge them by their work. AS PEOPLE,i judge them by their personal behavior. Seen alot of talent artists who are crappy people and vice versa.
And Gail kinda falls into just plain WEIRD artist/person section.
Butterfly nets,anyone?

Same here. I try to divoce the artist from his art. An artist can saw whatever they want, that is what freedom of speech is all about. Don't think saying something unpopular should endanger your job.

Brilliant cover concept! And I don't think it's been ever used on an Atom cover before, though it seems like such a natural.

As I understand, (2nd time today I've said that!) Byrne was leaving with #6 anyway (can Gail confirm that?).
Seems odd there'd be a fill-in within the first 6 issues when he's only doing the first 6 issues.
But Eddy's a great artist. First saw him do art on a GI JOE FRONTLINE arc a few years ago and loved his work.

I guess I am happy that Byrne will be leaving the title. My eyes could stand it for Action, but...something about this time doesn't fly for me. My eyes have to work overtime.

I think this is where the issue 6 idea came from. Which really indicated it would be less:

"I "signed on" to do start up when the assigned artist had schedule problems. To me that meant I'd be around for upwards of six issues, tho some other scheduling difficulties seem likely to shorten that. We'll see."

Just a clarification - you are on board as the regular artist on the new Atom series, right, just not for this special, 80 page giant?

All I have done so far is the preview, but barring unforeseen circumstances, I'm onboard for the duration.

As far as I know it's ongoing.
But that's what I was told about ACTION, too.

Not to stir stuff up but I don't think Byrne won any congeniality awards for dropping our of the SUPERMAN RETURNS tie-in that adapted the Krypton sequence from the first movie.

If Byrne leaves, I'll almost certainly be quitting the title. I enjoy Byrne's work, and it was what mainly attracted me to the title.

I believe some rumor columns were saying that Dan Didio (who's a big Byrne fan and was a big reason we had those DOOM PATROL and DEMON series) was miffed about that SR situation and is going to keep Byrne on art-only projects from now on...no more writing & art gigs.
Rumors, though...

personal tastes. i, personally, don't like how he draws faces. he can't draw lips, noses, or eyes. those are what my eyes focus on when i read comics; can't help it. and he made that black professor look like Jar Jar Binks.

See, and I always thought he drew the best eyes. I grew up reading comics in the 1970's and 80's. To me, that was a pretty dark period for artists. There were very few artists during that time that could really make a comic look great.
I can still remember old Mile High Comics price lists that showed any comic drawn by him to be worth more than by any other artists, including George Perez and Marshal Rogers. At the time, I think only Neal Adams and Steranko issues could guarantee an issue being worth more.
I think this is a problem in general for our society. We judge men based on their words, rather than their actions.

Actually, I think they've been reading Justice, where Atom just fought Giganta in the latest issue...
And if anyone here is NOT reading Justice, shame on you! It is abso-freakin'-lutely awesome!

Isn't her shadow the reason why the walls behind them are different shades?

I think it's a perspective thing. Her foot is even bigger than you think, and still quite a bit higher up because of that. Hence the shadow is still on the wall, and not the pavement.

I don't know... you can see the shadow of the lamp post on the wall, when it is clearly taller than the boot, and should probably even be encompassed by the boot's shadow. I think it's a mistake, but I don't care, it's still a cool cover.

And these rumors are....enhanced at Comic-Con, as it was announced at the BRAVE NEW WORLD panel that Byrne is only doing the art on ATOM #1-3.
So either Eddy Barrows is filling in for the new guy or is the new artist of THE ALL-NEW ATOM.
