Aether Girl

She is tied into the fifth element which manifests itself as gravity powers and limited cosmic awareness. She is the daughter of one of Reed Richards colleagues who went missing. About a year older than Johny they take turns loving and hating each other. When in the negative zone she transforms into a superskrull like being, only her entire body exhibits the powers.

One fateful night, a daring quartet stole aboard a space rocket only intended for one passenger--Marty the Monkey! The cosmic rays they were exposed to on the trip returned them to earth with extraordinary powers! Marty received human-sized intellect and the power of speech, and while those powers may not seem so "fantastic" in comparison to the other four, he also has his original monkey agility and the ability to communicate with other animals, making him an equal and capable member of-- The Fantastic Five!

Thanks Escapegoat! I was actually surprised that no one else did a space monkey, it's so "early space-age." Since Marty gains human intellect and communication abilities, I feel that makes him as good as a "person" or an equal, rather than a mascot or pet for the team.

Bakla - I love Ms. Midnight! If anyone nailed what was missing from the original FF I think it was you. And you nailed the Kirby style! I'm so jealous! I wanted to do that as well, but Kirby didn't draw a lot of monkeys so I didn't have much reference.

Gadfly - Another neat take on the aether concept. I like how you refined her power into gravity and cosmic awareness... I imagine her being kind of like Crystal, and maybe she leaves Johnny for Mar-Vell! I'm not sure the design really evokes the Silver Age though.

Thanks guys - it was fun and easy enough to conceptualize, enough to bring me out of my 'retirment.' ;) But man, it took me a while (and quite a few references) to get the vintage Kirby feel as close as I did.

Yeah, I actually loved this challenge enough to try one of my own, too, even though it took me this long to post it. Still didn:t even get to add color! I, too, thought of the Fantastic Pet, and also a helper robot, and even a little alien sidekick, but the first two already seemed derivative (Lockjaw and Herbie) and the other was too Poochie. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gazoo)

So instead of going with aether or void as a 5th element, I ended up going a bit more in the Captain Planet direction-- the "heart" as the 5th element, but also coupled with the missing dynamic of the four-- the mysterious outsider, strong and silent, almost prophetic. Contrary to nearly everyone else, too, I never considered the fifth member to be female.

First, my favorite, the Plant Master!

As my swan song for this season I'm going to do a Play-Along for the current challenge.

I'll do a non-powered superhero identity for the ever-elusive Mr. Big.

And I'll tell you now, kids, it will be ridiculous in the extreme. I'm going to come up with a design, write down everything I think doesn't work and then make them ten times worse.

Hopefully it will make your eyes bleed. :)

ARPA Patrolman, Lincoln Hamilton, spots a quartet of space shuttle-jackers race past his post where he's guarding an experimental Space Craft. He runs after them and boards the craft just before the doors close. He confronts them too late, just as he's about tell them to leave the ship the rockets ignite and the thrust hurls him backwards and he hits his head against an air duct knocking him out instantly.

The four rocket wranglers are in their space suits, but Lincoln has no such protection, and when the ship is bombarded with cosmic rays he begins an existence that is in between life and death. He begins to awaken as the shuttle is in it's final approaches back to Earth, in a state of shock his body phases through the rocket and he slowly floats back to Earth and sees the foursome undergo their own Fantastic transformations. He lands and tells them they are under arrest.

After a lengthy argument back at the Launch site with top brass he is assigned to oversee Richards and company and report any dangerous activity they're involved in to the military. But before he can argue any further a diminutive figure emerges from a hole in the ground followed by many large monsters and he has to help the Foursome get the situation under control, at the end of that day he thought he had seen everything. Little did he know just how much he was about to be witness to.

Lincoln Hamilton was the Fifth born child in his family was was named after the presidents that are found on the Nickel and Five Dollar Bill. His powers are density manipulation and he can attune his five senses to penetrate solid barriers as well. His outfit is made up of unstable molecules the same as the original four, but he keeps his shirt and service pistol from the launch to show his military allegiance. He can manipulate the density of his bullets as well. He reluctantly works with the four and they know it, they always look at him as an outsider to them, he's just a Government Spook.

Been waiting for a Bakla siting all season.
Amazing as always.

I was trying to work with the Aether element as well, but couldn't really think of a way to make it work visually. You knocked it out the park though.
If I finish mine I'll have it up sometime before Thursday.

Bakla, if that was in the competition proper, it'd have my vote. That's, to overuse the word, fantastic.

What both of them said. I thought this last challenge was only okay, but would've voted for your entry, Bakla. Feels a bit like Kirby by way of Mike Allred.

Wakanda looks great. Lots going on, but that's very Kirbyesque. That face is great. Looks like he stepped right out of Godland too.

This also likely marks the most times the word aether has been used on CBR within a week's time.

When John James Preston, last scion of Gotham's Preston dynasty, realized his current flame was obsessed with Batman he drank himself silly and then found a junkie genius to fashion a new version of his family's legendary hero: The Big Man of Gotham.

The costume is padded leather, armor, big poundin' gloves, and the most ridiculous accessories Gotham has ever seen. And you don't want to know what he keeps in his giant codpiece. Really.

So that's my farewell to this season. The whole thing was done on the computer- the library is closed this weekend so I had no scanner. I really tried for the most ridiculous thing I could come up with that wasn't just silly for silly's sake. And, trust me, you really don't want to know what he keeps in the codpiece.

It is a good start, R.E. It think next would be emphasize the aspect of the supernatural you are working with. I think the key for this challenge was to pick your nature inspiration first - and then to pick what aspect of supernatural you want to address with it.

I picked tapeworms - then I thought creepy because tapeworms seriously creep me out. and then I thought demons/saints instead of shamanic supernatural or undead.

My alternate design was the Patron Saint of Tapeworms.

He is wearing brown leather moccasins, black leather leggings with cloth purple/navy "tick lickers", loin cloth with purple/navy blue pattern lining both sides, frilly cotton shirt, sash, heavy colonial jacket with silver buttons and large navy blue cuffs, matching navy blue colonial hat with silver buttons, and a purple cloth masquerade mask with an embroidered H.

Hawkeye, being an orphan who ran off with the circus, is the type of guy who would go for comfort over conformity. He'd pick up on the style from some Indian buds he meet while touring the world and add a little circus flare.

The Falconer

Born into slavery Samuel spent most of his life as a personal servant to Master Steven Rogers, but after a native American shaman gave him the power to communicate with birds he escaped. Samuel fought for both sides in the war of independence but finally joined the Americans when Steven Rogers agreed to free his personal slaves and fight to free every slave after the war.

Samuel's jacket is cut like an American soldier's but the colors are that of the Shaman who gave him his power. He wears a leather glove to protect himself from Redwings claws. The pendant allows him to communicate with birds.

Cool entries, folks.

R.E. Barnes - Doctor Strange

I love the coat. The edging in yellow makes it for me.

ipoormonster - Hawkeye
the blue and purple bandings make the outfit for me. Well that and the cut of the coat - I've always liked that shape. You did a really nice job of adding a native american feel but still have it colonial.

Gadfly - Falcon
I like the concept, and the pendant but dude needs a shirt. It feels more like a modern day interpretation of a colonial outfit rather than one the Falcon would be wearing in Colonial times, especially if he is working to establish freedom for slaves, he would likely be going for a power look appropriate to the times.

You make a good point and I did have a shirt version. In the end I decided that a bare chest was one of the falcon's defining characteristics. I was trying for a look that bridged the gap between slave and nobleman. Still the shirt looked good.

Oh the pendant was part of Falcon's original costume, not my creation but I do like the look of it.

Inside he has a long sleeved button up with a polka dotted chrome colored tie to match his chrome-chrome belt and arm latches, as well as his chrome plated shoes, and identity protective mask. The arms and hands of his bubble suit are made of a black, ALMOST indestructible rubber with chrome rings, and he wears a pair of black, saw protective pants (as in chainsaw, and yes those are a real thing in the real world).

Adrian Monk is a brilliant, OCD detective who, after the mysterious murder of his wife, suffered from a mental breakdown which left him with a list of phobias, making it hard for him to even leave the house. Convinced a conspiracy surrounds his wife's death, Monk, with the help of Batman (who you think taught Bruce to be such a Bad-A detective?) creates the perfect suit for him to search the night for clues. -Cause he was like Bruce's mentor, then went crazy, so Batman was like, "I will help you... New York City Bailiff by night, the salty-tongued Selma takes a more proactive approach to justice in her off hours since true justice can come in many forms, and since she is currently husbandless, she is a wee bit bored. Inspired by adventurous movie heroines, she tackles would-be muggers with her sarcastic wit and cigarette smoke. If that doesn't get them to seen the light, then a smack upside the head or a kick in the pants usually does the trick.

The Brassy Bombshell is wearing blue in honour of the Thin Blue Line, with her costume made of a wool-cotten blend. Her steel-toed leather boots are decorated with brass, and she carries a brass baton and brass handcuffs and a cigarette dangling from her lips.

These are both brilliant. I'd considered Monk, but couldn't think of a direction to take him in. This is fun and inspired. I was also considering a character from Night Court, only I was going to work on Bull. There were just too many possibilities here. I'll post a rough I had for Carl Winslow, who I spent a lot of time developing, but his show wasn't really a show about crime, it was about family and one really annoying neighbor.

very rough, it was in non-photo blue so I had to tweak the saturation and contrast to even get that much of a black line to show up. Basically Urkel designed a ballistic proof fabric for Carl to fight crime in. I tried a few different approaches to a Walrus(because of Carl's mustache) and this is the one I fancied most. But took a completely different direction at the last minute.

I knew when I read the challenge it was going to be a character from either Barney Miller or Night Court and I started off thinking about Dan Fielding, but when I started rewatching episodes to help me narrow ideas, the entire cast gave me ideas but there is never enough Selma love. I had forgotten just how good that show was.

Please post your Carl Winslow, but until you mentioned it I had forgotten his character was a cop.

i originally wanted to design a golden aged superman-esque costume for Andy Griffith, but with Barney Fife in talks by people, i dropped it. someone out there still owes us a Barney Fife!!!

Barny Fife. Not my idea to use Fife but after he was mentioned I could not resist.

Don Knotts: "Nip it in the bud! You got to nip it in the bud! ... Nip it! You go read any book you want on the subject of child discipline, and you'll find that every one of 'em is in favor of bud-nippin'... Only one way to take care of it."
Andy Griffith: "Nip it."
Knotts: "In the bud."

I like the idea, but I'm finding the costume a bit too Batmanish. I think I see where you were going but I wish you had changed up a few more details to differentiate the Night Nipper a bit more.

YAY Barney! great name(Night Nipper), Gadfly. i liked this one for the very reasons snarkbunny didn't. i can totally see Barney emulating Batman and having his own ragtag ripoff suit. perfect!

Sparky has me wishing that Splinter would find his way into the X-Men! art looks great, End of Time! that's one cool Jubilee.

After a pig swallowed Guy Gardner's power battery, he was convinced to not slaughter the pig by his beloved Ice. Now he and Bacon are inseparable companions, and he is not-so-secretly extremely fond of the intelligent animal. Pigs are frequently maligned and underestimated, yet they are clever and interesting, which makes a pig very much like Guy Gardner.

Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern of bizarre mishaps, and if anyone would get their power battery eaten by a pig, it would be Guy (or G'nort). I stuck with the classic GL colours of green, dark green/black, and white and I added a cossack influence to the pants and the GL logo on the bottom of the boots so that villains get left with a reminder of who has been kicking their butts.

Man, a pig is just an inspired choice! And I can see this "working" on so many levels-- the animal, its name, the hero... An amazing job, Snark!

Oh, and this thread has just reached 40,000 views! Awesome!

Lockheed has been gradually revealed to be a brave, highly intelligent alien, with excellent fighting skills. In my take on the character, he returns to his home planet for help and is given a gauntlet that teleports him through space, and a second that wields a sword beam. He also adorns, for the first time since his banishment, the ancient, woven, battle garments of his flock.
http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l604/ipoormonster/beast.jpg
Nobble is a part of the race of creatures that protects the stones Lockheed's society uses to power their inventions/weapons. When Lockheed returns and starts forging his new weapons he finds he has an admirer that will not leave his side. He eventually takes him in as a pet and names him Nobble in response to the way the speedy creature sneaks about and collects others belongings.

*Drawings aren't to scale. Lockheed is the size of a large cat, and Nobble, an independent kitten.

I thought Barny would see himself as a batman type. But he wouldn't wear tights because those are for girls. He wouldn't get violent either, he just doesn't have it in him. The people of mayberry would feel safe having their own super guy. Of course the are all a little slow.

I see where you are coming from but in my opinion your best designs come with that quirky gadfly twist, and visually, I don't see either a lot of gadfly in here or a lot of Barney Fife.

soooo, i was in a bit of a rush with this last challenge, and totally thought we were suppose to design for a favorite pet character not "pet character". hence my choice of Lockheed. hahaha

good thing i did though, or i would have picked Nightcrawler too, and i like that everyone ends up doing something for different characters every time.

i just noticed the 4 of us that posted stuff here matched our main characters and their pets really strongly. i ended up voting for Ariel and Dom2 in the challenge, because they were the only ones that complimented each other like a real pair.

great job guys! anyone going to work on the final challenge!?

Oh yea! He's my avatar.

Well, this is a personal bummer for me. I'm not going to make the deadline for the Fashion Week. My apologies, I really wanted to finish but I had to prioritize this past week, and the competition fell to starting a new full-time job and purchasing a house.

Here on the last afternoon of work, my premise is all set, one design complete, three drafted, and the fifth one not even sketched a little bit. So, I am out.

I will be around to vote, and I wish Martin and Danny all the best.

Here is the horror version of my character, just for whatevers sake:

http://www.thirteenthstory.com/lj/plaguedr.jpg

He had his logo on the bag and a couple other design elements I removed... because when it is not part of the series, I like him plain.

Thank you.

Sorry, I couldn't come up with strong horror or fantasy designs. I thuoght I could get them in in time, but life being what it is sidelined me this round. I'll post what I have in this thread by the end of the week.

Project runway season 5: an idea revisited

This is a re imagined version of one of my try outs for season 5.

Sgt. Stripes.

http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab309/gadflycomics/a09ff31a.png

Here is the original

http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab309/gadflycomics/Audition_Model_SheetM.gif

The biggest criticism of both entries was that they did not look like superhero/villain costumes, just regular clothes with stuff tacked on (which was the whole idea actually, not a popular idea) I tried to make my super NCO more super but still make him look like a guy who would fight along side the enlisted men. I think he needs a helmet or the hat from the original.
