And also, which are the ones to avoid?

Im in the mood for some good Toho Monster stomping, but a bit overwhelmed by the various repackaging of the films and number of titles.

I think Godzilla vs. Megalon (76) is where Godzilla teams up w/ Jet Jaguar? That might be one of the better ones, if I recall correctly.

and has anyone seen the Gamera films that came out in the late 90's? wondering if those are any fun to watch.

Godzilla (original), 1st Godzilla
Rodan (original), 1st Rodan
Mothra (orginal), 1st Mothra

I personally enjoy Godzilla vs Hedora (aka the Smog Monster). Destroy All Monsters is good. King Kong vs Godzilla is enterataining, although the American version has a different ending than the Japan version. Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, Godzilla vs Monster Zero (aka King Ghidorah) are good.

For Gamera, check out the original Gamera movies. They did not originate in the 90's. Gamera is basically a Godzilla rip-off.

Let me say this right , the 90s Gamera trilogy ARE the best giant monster movies ever made.
Not surprised that many are not well aware of it as Gamera popularity have always been less than Godzilla BUT i tell you , Gamera : Guardian of the universe , Gamera 2 : Assault of the Legion and Gamera 3 : Revenge of Iris - all three by director Shusuke Kaneko ,in my opinion, easily trumps all the godzilla movies of that time because it was not just made for kids like the old gamera movies or the latest one. It was very realisticly done.

The third one especially was spectacular , the special effects was very realistic and was very awesome. Trust me , you will not regret watching it. I definitely recommend all three and watch it in order , as part 3 storyline is linked in part to part 1 to get the full experience.

I'd go with Destroy All Monsters from the orignal series.

from the most recent series, "Tokyo S.O.S." is pretty dang nifty, w/ King Ghidora, Mothra, and Batra (I think, it's been a while since I've seen it) "repackaged" as defenders of Japan, and they are "activated" from slumber to stop Godzila.

the most recent one: "Final Wars" is interesting as a film, but not a good Godzilla film. It was directed by the guy who did "Versus", and the plot is a mis-mash of "Destroy all Monsters" "Monster Zero", "the Matrix", "X-men" , and "Star Wars". . .

in other words, it's all over the place. and there are LONG sequences (almost an hour at one point) where you don't see Godzilla or any of the other Kaiju. . . however, there is a lot of mutants w/ powers fighting and doging bullets.

when the creatures do fight, it's pretty dang nifty. if you only care about the LOOK of the film, give "Final Wars" a shot.

oh, and I'll second that the 3 90's Gamera films are well worth checking out. . they update the silly creatures from the 60's/70's films, and are quite good (tho I find the third to be the weakest). In fact, when these came out, they kicked Godzilla's butt -- to the point that the Fanzine "G-Fan" took a vote if they should shift thier focus to cover all Kaiju (ie: Gamera) as well as Godzilla.

Toho took notice, and the effects in the Godzilla films that followed were much better than they had been. . .

"Godzilla vs. Megalon" was great, and was the first appearance of one of my favorite kaiju heroes, Jet Jaguar. :p

RE: w/ King Ghidora, Mothra, and Batra (I think, it's been a while since I've seen it) "repackaged" as defenders of Japan

I think you might be a little confused here. The Movie GMK (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah) featured Godzilla as a Demonic Force that had arisen to destroy Japan, and Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon were spirit creatures that were summoned to protect Japan from him. The Tokyo SOS movie you're referring to is called GMMG or something like that, with Tokyo SOS as a subtitle, and it features Godzilla, Mecha Godzilla, and Mothra in it IIRC.

RE: although the American version has a different ending than the Japan version

Urban legend. The only difference is that Godzilla's roar was removed from the end, which implies a draw to the battle.

Actually its not True Godzilla but what I enjoyed alot and its not a movie is the Godzilla Animated series that came out after the American Version did. I was really impressed with it as a Cartoon and thought it was alot of fun and much better plotted than the original movie.

And it was more entertaining than the original Godzilla Cartoon.

I'd recommend the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and the followup Terror of Mechagodzilla.

When I watched GMK, I thought it probably wasn't a bad Godzilla movie at all, but I just couldn't get used to the idea of Ghidorah being the good guy.

I hated Godzilla 2000. Fighting a spacerock or whatever the hell it was just isn't exciting. He should eather be smashing military forces or tearing it up agianst other kaiju.

My personal Pics:

Godzilla 54: Because it shows what GOdzilla is REALLY about.. THe Horror of Aotmci Powe,r in body and form, which is damn near unstoppable, and well kills with no reason, or remorse.

As for SHowa Era; After 54-to 70s.

Avoid Anything made after Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla.

I also think the Heisei Era Godzilla rocks. (80s an dearly 90s.)

As for Gamera: 90s Gamera, is among the best giant monster movies, ever. (IMHO.)
