This months issues of Action and Superman are good starting off points for monthlies. Superman goes through different phases (much like Batman) so you don't have to know much about comics from 6 months ago in order to understand what's happening now.
All Star Superman is like "Ultimate" in that it's disconnected from outside continuity, but it's different because the next creative team will have their own contiuity and All Star Batman doesn't have the same continuity.
So, basically, convuluted continuity is lame and you don't have to worry about it too much with Superman comics right now.

Yep. You can pick up regular "Superman" if you want as well.

A GREAT place to start reading is right in the privacy of your own bathroom! I take a HUGE stack of comics in there with me, and tell the wife to stock up on air freshener, and...
Oh, WAIT! THAT'S not what you meant, WAS it?

So I'm not the only one!
But along those lines, I was going to suggest the book store. Trade paperbacks! Get your coffee/flavored soda/whatever, find a comfortable chair, and spend a couple hours tearing through $15 and $20 comic collections.
ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN are both great books to pull right now.

I've always been interested in Superman movies, shows, etc. but I never read any comics (Superman or otherwise.) Well last week, I finally decided to check out the comic books so I went to a comic store in my local mall. The guy at the counter recommended the graphic novel Superman: Birthright. This is pretty much the first comic I've ever read, with exception to when I was a little kid. I friggin' loved it - amazing. I went back the next day and asked for some more recommendations. So I picked up the graphic novels The Death of Superman, Superman For All Seasons, and Red Son. I'm halfway through The Death of Superman, and I absolutely love it. Doomsday just kicks arse. So, in my extremely limited experience at reading comics I would recommend Superman: Birthright if you're looking for a good place to begin.

It's the story of Superman from the very beginning, rewritten a couple of years ago. It follows the destruction of Krypton, his landing in Smallville, his decision to disguise himself as Clark Kent, his introduction to Lois Lane and his introduction to Lex Luthor. I knew a lot of the mythos just from watching the movies, but reading the comics is a whole other dimension. The movies fail to illustrate how much he struggles to form an identity, and Birthright is excellent in this respect. I'm really unfamiliar with artwork in comics, so I don't appreciate it as much as others because I don't have much to compare it with. Don't get me wrong, I think the artwork looked really cool. But, as I mentioned, I'm a complete newb when it comes to comic books. I can tell you that the writing for Birthright is fantastic.
