Starring Burt Lancaster [1958?] Talk about Buckeling your swartz. No CGI and no stunt men for Burt. Lancaster used what he learned as a flier in the circus to leap from roof top to roof top, swing from awning to awning and just about everything else thriety feetr in the air.
That movie came back to me when I was watching The first Pirates of the carib... Jack and friend walking under water under a over turned row boat.
Same bit in th crimson pirate only fifty years earlier. Only flaw this period piece [1685 to 1750] was when a big white modern passanger ship sailed by in the back round! Ever see it?

I've seen it. It's a great spoof of classic pirate movies with a bit of a sci-fi twist (there's an inventor who keeps creating anachronistic items such as hot air balloons and submarines). It's tons o'fun for Lancaster's performance alone, and the smaller mute pirate is the acrobat who used to be his circus team mate.
Trivia note: This is the first film in which Lancaster played in drag. Can anyone name the other? Answer: THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER
My personal fave among pirate films is CAPTAIN BLOOD with Errol Flynn. THE BLACK PIRATE silent film with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. is also tons of fun and has some truly astonishing action sequences in it.

Just a sidenote: The Crimson Pirate?
...So THAT'S where Mainframe got the idea for "The Crimson Binome", their computer pirate from the Reboot series! :)
I've always loved the CP, but then Burt was always fun to watch in anything he made.
It's also a bit of a parody, but I have always been a huge fan of Swashbuckler filmed somewhere in the mid 70's starring an all-star cast lead by, Robert Shaw, Peter Boyle and James Earl Jones.
It's a great pirate movie starring a bunch of guys who actually look the part. In fact the opening scene of the movie where they are getting ready to hang Robert Shaw will seem very familiar to fans of a certain Johnny Depp movie.
