View Full Version : MOJO's free REVOLVER RELOADED CD.

Last month's issue of MOJO featured a cover story about the 100 greatest Beatles songs of all time. Along with the magazine came a free CD called REVOLVER RELOADED, which consisted of new recordings of old REVOLVER songs by current indie rock performers. It was an interesting listen. Paradoxically, the CD proved why good songs are good songs no matter who records them, and why it's hard to top the original artist's recording in most cases.

It's also got a bonus track of "Rain" (the Beatles' version didn't show up on REVOLVER, but was the B-side to the "Paperback Writer" single that was recorded at the same time as the REVOLVER songs).

Have you heard Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude?" I love the first half of the Beatles' version so much that I never thought it could be bettered, but I think Pickett stole that song.

That's my favorite cover of a Beatles' song; I agree with you; I think Pickett took a great song, and made it better. My particular favorite part is his scream at the end of the last verse. I get goose bumps from that point on. AND, I think that's Duane Allman on guitar, too.

Does it sound anything like the version found on this thing? (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:zgse4j670wav)

Yup; that's it.

I was surprisingly underwhelmed by Picket's Hey Jude but it probably has to do with the fact that the original is simply one of my favourite songs ever and, perhaps over-long coda aside, can't really be improved. And back to the topic at hand, I am interested in this CD but I doubt that the originals can be improved on - much like The Who covers CD Mojo released a few months back.

It is an interesting exercise, and a few of the versions (The Handsome Family's "Eleanor Rigby," Michael Weston King's "For No one," and especially Thea Gilmore's "I want to tell you") are really quite good. And I actually might like Jason Mcniff's version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" better than the original, simply because it rescues the melody from all that ridiculous "psychedelic" claptrap the Beatles burdened the original with. And Ed Harcourt is amazing as always.
But expecting them to surpass the originals is sort of a false choice, don't you think?
There were some interesting covers on the Who CD, as well: I particularly liked the Flaming Lips' "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" and Richard Thompson's "Legal Matter." But then Richard Thompson could sing/play the phone book and that would be all right with me.

Er, yeah, actually. I am actually usually quite interested in hearing different versions of Beatles covers but I do normally feel underwhelmed by them because most of the covers I've heard are either useless carbon copies or take the songs in directions that don't neccesarily suit them. I will definitely snatch this up if I find this mag at a decent price (the price of new magazines in this country are laughable - basically take the cover price, convert it to Rands and multiply by two but there are often a few months old remainder issues which are reasonably priced) both for the CD and the promising features in the mag itself.

I actually haven't listened to it for a while so I can't recall much of the actual tracks besides the general feel - yeah, but it sounds so much better when the 'Oo play it. Again, the Who are one of the few bands that I'm fanatical about so I see any alternate version of a song as being something of a perversion but I also think that The Who had such an incredible chemistry that the songs can't help but generally be inferior when played by others.
Also, your post reminds me, I've definitely got to check out some Fairport Convention at some point.

Speaking of Beatles covers, any thoughts on the I Am Sam soundtrack?

I like it a lot, actually. There a few duff tracks (Sheryl Crow, Ben Folds) but on the whole it's a fun listen.

Well, the 101 greatest Beatles songs feature is worth the price of admission all by itself.
As for the cost of MOJO, I've found that subscribing to it, rather than buying it at the newstands saves me about $30.

Is it better than the RUBBER SOUL cover album from last year? There were a couple of good tracks (Low does a nice "Nowhere Man"), but it was mostly pretty blah.
