I'm trying to find an old Cap vs Skull story, where they both are old men, literally.

I just grabbed this from Wikipedia:

"The war between Captain America and Red Skull in the modern era reached a breaking point when Red Skull one day discovered that the gas that had placed him in suspended animation was now wearing off and that his body was rapidly aging to what would be Skull's normal age. Now physically in his mid-80s, a weak and feeble Red Skull planned for a final showdown with his arch-rival. Kidnapping Captain America's closest allies, he forced Captain America to surrender himself to Skull and forcibly undergo a medical treatment that aged Captain America's body to its rightful age. The two men, their bodies now ancient, fought one last battle to the death. But at the last minute, Captain America refused to kill the Red Skull and Skull himself died cursing Captain America, as his elderly body shut down. Dead at last, it seemed like the threat of the Red Skull was gone at last."

That is the storyline I'm trying to find. Can anyone help? I have no idea what issues I'm looking for.

Captain America #297-300
Yeah, that's the build up to the ending... There's a whole ramp up with Mother Night and the 3 or 4 nuns that eventually spawned the current cap villianess 'Sin'...

I didn't enjoy the storyline very much. It felt too contrived... and by the ending, it still didn't feel right to me.

I'm not sure, but I have heard that after this storyline, the brough Cap back to full strength... then later claimed that this storyline was a ruse to get a tissue sample from Cap and clone a new "Youthful body" for the Skull to inhabit... but even t hat seems far fetched....

Give me Brubaker's plotting any day....:D

From what I recall of the backups in Gruenwald's Cap run, Red Skull didnt really know that Arnim Zola was going to put him in a clone Cap body, it was just fortunate for him. And I think up until the time that Brubacker killed that body, Skull was in that clone.

The SKull was inhabiting the cloned body of Steve Rogers when Brubaker killed him. That's why SHIELD needed Cap for verification, since their DNA was identical.

Anyway, I loved the Cap 300 story. It was the culmination of an excellent 40-issue run by JM Dematteis, the bulk of which featured beautiful Mike Zeck art.

Let's just say the book was very JM DeMatties. The whole thing with Black Crow (or was that the next issue? I forget) was definitely his brand of comic book nutshell spirituality.

Yeah, the Mike Zeck artwork prior to this milestone really had drawn me in. I loved that team-up. Lots of folks loved the Cap/Deathlock storyarc...
