Alright, I’ve got good news and bad news for Hellboy fans. The bad news is that the much-anticipated Hellboy: Darkness Calls miniseries has been pushed back, tentatively to February 2007.

The good news is that I have confirmation of the long requested Abe Sapien project. It’s going to be a miniseries that provides a definite explanation of his origins. No word yet on the creative team for this one, but I can’t imagine Mike Mignola letting this story be told without writing or co-writing it…

Is this really true?!?

I'm guessing it would be a long awaited Lobster Johnson mini instead..

Hmmm...Mike, CBM, Scott...is there truly a big snafu with Darkness Calls that is pushing it back again ? You know we'll be right here waiting, just curious...

It's interesting...once the movie hit, anything having to do with Hellboy seems to have gone into slow-motion. "The Island" was two years late. The Hellboy action figures took a year from announcement to the racks, and the second wave is taking just as long. Who knows what's going on with Hellboy 2. Now Darkness Calls is being pushed back, while we're being tantalized with various miniseries I doubt we'll see before winter '08.

At least Tad seems to be on schedule. ;)

Pushed back..other series..I think as long as -something- happens before then, I'll be happy enough. Very much doubt nothing will come up inbetween, letting two book series sit idle...wouldnt think so.

Not that I don't trust your sources here, but you didn't mention any. Just curious where you obtained your information regarding the push back date for Darkness Calls specifically?

I feel your pain Poe, especially where the action figures are concerned. However, all of the products mentioned are being produced by different companies, and therefore can't truly be linked as being part of some push back the release date conspiracy. :D

Once the movie made Hellboy a really bankable franchise and big sums of money got involved, everything slows down.

Though that doesn't really explain Darkness Calls. I suspect it's either an issue with the art production or MM's going through some of his usual agonizing over the plot and layouts, a la The Island.

Good gosh how did I miss that?! When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I guess next time I should read more thoroughly before making unsubstantiated comments. :D

Thanks, Ruta!

Hmm, doesn't make sense that the popularity of a film would influence production to the point of having it slow down. If anything I would figure it would speed up to meet demand for product following the films release. However, in the action figure world production does (for some reason) seem to slow down (see McFarlane's release of Corpse Bride figures several months after the movies premiere), but I don't think that necessarily applies across the board.

I could be wrong though. You're probably much more tied into the daily in's and out's of this stuff than I am Poe. :D

We don't have "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" fans here?

The first three issues were on time, then two months 'til the fourth, three months 'til the fifth, and five months until the sixth.

I'd rather get "Hellboy" one after another, monthly, and if that means a wait, it means a wait.

-K.

Yeah, and there's some people who waited for the TPB after that. Other people are just impatient :)

In any event, I'm more annoyed by the year-long wait between Hellboy figure waves than the delay on Darkness Calls. Though not as annoyed as I have been by the thus-far two-year wait for SOTA's Nightmares of Lovecraft figures.

Realize that the collectible figure market changed drastically when the Musicland companies went out of business. Several smaller studios collapsed completely. Everyone else has to play things more cautiously when it comes to what, when and how much they put out.

Eh. I kinda' liked his ambiguous origin. I mean, it isn't nearly as unknown as it was when he was just a fish-man in a tube, but knowing that he's tied into the Deep Ones story from "A Shadow Over Innsmouth" is enough for me. Overexplaining it could ruin the idea.

Everyone else has to play things more cautiously when it comes to what, when and how much they put out.Being a diehard action figure collector (and frequent contributor to ToyFare magazine), I'm well aware of the vagaries of the action figure market in recent years. But even SOTA manages to get their Street Fighter waves out in five-month intervals, and they're probably not doing as well as Mezco, who has the very successful Living Dead Dolls line going for them. It's unclear why there has been such a long interval between waves of the comic-based Hellboy line, and Mezco has not given collectors any notion as to why.

Of course, there has been some speculation that wave 2 of the comic-based line is being timed to coincide with the release of a certain animated DVD. There's also been speculation that the time and money that would usually be spent producing and distributing the comic-based line is being spent on, oh, I don't know, a line based on a certain animated DVD in order to get that line out in time for the release of said DVD.

Just spreading unfounded rumors ;)

Now wait, didn't Mighty Editor Scott Allie say just as much, either here, Hellmail, or the DH Hellboy/BPRD Zone within the past month or so? Or is it being pushed back again (though I don't recall a date beyond "not September")?

Ah, here it is: Dated 5-10-2006 (http://www.darkhorse.com/zones/hellboy/editor.php)
