If you would be as kind as to include that issues your favorite story ran through Id appreciate it.

I always loved strange but the problem was he was hard to write by just anyone. Normally ended up with crummy stories and such.

All I really have is his first few stories from the start, the dr doom and dr strange graphic novel and one of the mini series and of course the craptacular strange newer mini series I wished I didnt spend money on. But thats about it.

Im hoping with his background involvement in civil war he might come up again and be good again, just havent heard much from him lately. Unless you count that ultimate version which I dont even recognize as strange.

The Doctor Strange series that started in 1974 was the best. With Stern's run from 46 to 73 being the pick of the bunch.

I think the comic only came out once every two months which give the writers more time to carefully plot it.
Given the wider and perhaps less defined powers of magic, it might have been required to avoid the ''hang on why didn't he just'', plot holes.

The Roger Stern Doctor Strange stories particularly Doctor Strange #59-62, 68-73:

In Doctor Strange #59-62, Doctor Strange reads the Montessi Formula; the spell--written within the evil Darkhold--destroys all vampires within the Earth dimension. Doctor Strange, being Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, makes him not as vulnerable for his soul to be turned over to the Elder God, Chthon. To prove the Montessi Formula's effectiveness, reminant Darkholders summon an alien vampire from another dimension, but he too is destroyed as shown in Doctor Strange #67.

Doctor Strange #68-72 is when Doctor Strange travels to the Dark Dimension, ruled by Umar, as Clea leads a rebellion. Umar falsely believes Doctor Strange is part of Clea's rebellion, ironically, leading him to get involved. Clea discovers Orini is her father & Umar is her mother. Therefore, Dormammu is Clea's uncle. Clea eventually usurps control from Umar when Umar loses the spiritual support of the Dark Dimension inhabitants when Umar makes her plan known she is willing to weaken the Mindless Ones' barrier for more power. Umar is exiled. Clea is made the Dark Dimension's queen.

X-Static: Dead Girl. The Doctor's played for laughs and it's great. I wish Milligan would wirte a Doctor Strange solo tale.

I love the Doctor Doom team up where they go to hell. Great characterization of Doom and Strange

Siegzon I see you didn't include Marvel Premiere 14, where God of the Old Testament turns out to a been an evil time travelling wizard !!!! What The...!

I consider myself to be a pretty liberal Anglo Catholic, and semi-lapsed at that. And the story still made me blink.
I imagine it would have had the Fundies foaming.
But then I don't suppose they'd have been reading Doctor Strange in the first place. :D

Doctor Strange #5-9 (volume 3) "The Faust Gambit"

Doctor Strange #14-19 "The Vampiric Verses": A woman who keeps her youth by the blood of vampires uncreates the Montessi Formula as Strange's brother is brought back as a vampire. Mary Leabou tries to control the most ancient & evil of vampires with the ressurrection of Varnae, but he is too powerful to control. Eventually, Dracula & Lilith return from their state of uncreation...

Doctor Strange #20-24 "The Dark Wars": Dormammu returns & takes over the Dark Dimension from Clea. Umar & Baron Mordo help Strange overthrow Dormammu, but Clea is willingly exiled back to Earth. Umar & Mordo reign as the Dark Dimension's queen & king.

I'm a fan of Doc Strange. Haven't read a ton of stuff though. Anyway, it got me thinking. What's his purpose? Spiderman has the whole "with great power etc., Batman has the crazy revenge thing, well, what's Strange's? I know he's Sorceror Supreme and all that. But what does that mean? Does he protect the entire realm from global spiritual threat? And if so, isn't that difficult to write for? I think he needs to be toned down a little. Maybe more of a Constintine thing, or better yet, Cast a Deadly Spell style.

I'd like to see more of him and his apprentice, Rintrah. Some of my favorite stories about the Dr. involve Umar, like the one mentioned by other posters here- where she is trying to stamp out rebellion. Really anything with the Ancient One was fun to read as well.

I loved the original Shuma-Gorath tale, at least the first few parts with all the Lovecraft homages (like the snake-men and the thing that comes out of the water) Yeah, it's a ripoff of Lovecraft, but the art is really great.

I always thought he was a protector of the earth realm from a magical standpoint, a guardian of sorts. Not in the normal sense of captain america or spiderman but on a much grander scale. The kind of guy that most people would never know what he does. I always pictured him kind of the sad hero, he has to be alone because of what he is, most heroes cant stand with him, not that he is out of their league but just because the sport he plays is totally different.

He is also the the guy when people stop and say "ummmmmm were fu&^$%! call dr strange!"

I dont think he would be that hard to write for, they just need someone who loves the charcter and can write things that can be solved without fists. Wonder how gaiman might write him or jim starlin. Mignola already did a great job with him, Id like to see him return one day.

Oh and cast a deadly spell kicked much ass. I wish it would come out on dvd.

Doctor Strange, as Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, is to protect the Earth dimension from all forms of magickal & alien threats. One of the main reasons Dormammu cannot absorb the Earth dimension into the Dark Dimension is largely due to the Ancient One's spell. Therefore, Dormammu has to use other resources to enter Earth's dimension which usually take alot of time, magickal energy, & pawns.

Doctor Strange practicies white or good magic. He cannot practice chaos (black) magic or else he will some power. For instance, when Doctor Strange fought Shuma-Gorath in Strange Tales #1-19, he praciticed black or chaos magic, but lost the ability to wield the Orb of Agamotto, the Eye of Agamotto, & various spells from the Vishanti. Strange even had to destroy many of these artifacts to defeat another alien sorcerer, Uthorna (sp?). But Agamotto gave them back to him months later.
