View Full Version : Favourite 00's issue (so far)?

So most people, when asked what their favourite X-issue is, would probably say something by CC (which is fair enough) or something from the 70's or 80's.
I want to see some love for the 'noughties'.
Pick ONE issue (unless you change your mind. Like I probably will) from the entire X-line, from between 2000 and now and tell us why it floated your boat.
I wanna hear yours too Fishy!!!
One that immediately springs to mind for me is X-treme X-men #24.
http://www.uncannyxmen.net/covers/xtreme/xtreme24.jpg
It was a great stand-alone Claremont issue, featuring Cannonball helping with the aftermath of X-Men #130.
It was just a simple story of never giving up, even when the outcome looks hopeless.
Nothing earth shattering. Just a great read and great art (it was larocca's last issue and IMO the last time he really shone).

The New X-Men issue where Quentin Quire steps up his game, takes on the X-Men and is then stopped by a quintet of blonde beauty's, one of them ending up dead.
Fantastic lead in into the Jean Vs Emma arc.
Best thing I've read all century.

What killed the last thread was you should have posted " what was your favorite 80's X-Men covers " lol. Because you just knew that some wouldn't post anything from the 1990's. :p
I'm gonna wait awhile and see more covers til I make my decision.

Its a toss up for me. Its eithor Chuck Austen's " Juggernaunt Issue " where he goes home and destroys the family home finally over coming the abuse he suffered from his step dad or.. the end of #146 where Magneto is revealed as the traitor.
I'll go with single issue and pick the Juggernaunt issue.

As for issues, I can't really think that far back or make a single choice. Probably something from Riot at Xavier's, the Claremont issue where Rachel and Emma have a fight on the astral plane, or if the satellite titles count one of the issues from New X-Men's Too Much Information arc or X-Factor's first issue.

I'm torn.
I like certain things in Morrison's run. I love the new X-Factor. Claremont, despite public opinion, has had a few shining moments in the '00s. I'm sure I'm forgetting some significant work by another writer.
But for me, it's gotta be an issue of Astonishing. The problem is, I'd have to re-read the entire series to pick just one issue, and I don't have them with me right now. But still, it's Astonishing by a mile.
Ooh! The issue of X-Treme where Kitty finds the footage of her father dying. That makes me friggin' bawl!

I don't know...one issue is a hard pick, you know?
I was going to say New X-Men 139 but that's not my FAVORITE, just a good issue.
AX #15 was a pretty good issue as well, I liked it a lot, too.
I DON'T KNOW. Something from X-Factor (6 or was it 7, the Layla issue?)? An Unlimited story?
AH. One of the Dead Girl issues for sure...
Don't know! I think this is a pretty decade (even if we haven't seen the rest of it) for the X-Men. Some stuff sucked, other stuff was terrible, but I know I liked a lot of things since the Y2K oh noes!

this issue was so awesome and so many laugh-out-load moments.
Cable against SHIELD and the X-Men. Against his DAD and little (kinda) sister.
Deadpool dressed as Marvel Girl.
The line about iceman.
Deadpool as an X-Man.
And the awesome cliff-hanger with the Silver Surfer. Something Cable hadn't taken into account when forming his plan to save the world.
People if you have not read this issue you are missing out!

This is a tough choice. But after considering things, my favorite 2000s X-story would be "Schism". It just had "something" about it and was a return to the old-suspenseful comics of yesteryear. I really did not know where the story was going, and that was a good thing!
Plus, some of Salvador Larroca's best artwork. So I'll choose XXM #21 as representative of the entire arc. Chris Claremont's finest hour for this decade.

Milligan wrote a really strong and confident Alex for a change and I liked Lorna's quirky humor. The part two of the story in the following issue was unfortunately a huge let down, art included. I really liked seeing an issue devoted to my two favorite characters and yeah, a really good issue in my opinion.

Since my memory is horrible, I'm going with the issue that popped into my head when Sentinal K asked me. Uncanny X-Men #460... mostly for the reunion between Beast and Psylocke as well as Storm with Colossus. There's a lot of great moments, like Rachel and X-23 talking and the return of Juggernaut and Nocturne from Mojoworld. This and #461 were a great pair of 'downtime' issues, and it's always nice to see the X-Babies. :)

I like the Larroca drawn issues of X-Treme, but the issues within a given arc seem to blend together rather than individual issues being distinct. The annual is the most distinct one to me.

Eek, this is rough, while I liked Morrison's ideas, I didn't like how he wrote the characters. That's the main reason I like Whedon's X-Men. He didn't seem to grasp their personalities. I wouldn't be posting here, and wouldn't've come back to reading comics, if I didn't give Morrison's New X-Men a chance. E for Extinction was great, but I enjoyed Riot at Xavier's about as much, maybe more. The whole run was great, except for the final arc set in the future (which was only "good", I thought).
If it has to be just one issue . . . hate to say it, but maybe the silent "'Nuff Said" Morrison/Quietly issue. Not as good as what came before or after it, but as a stand-alone issue . . . maybe that.
It's funny trying to pick ONE ISSUE in an era where it seems like everything is written in multiple-issue arcs...

Dude, totally the Xorn/Magneto reveal.
Probably my favorite X-Men issue all-time, and certainly of the 00's.
Morrison had me completely fooled. Xorn had just about become my favorite X-Man by that time! I was completely blown away and every panel, every line of that issue, and of that completely unexpected revelation sequence was executed perfectly. I was so blown away, I was going up to all my friends and family like "You won't believe this!" "Xorn is really..." "Man, somebody take me to the white hot room NOW!" but none of them read X-Men so I had to deal with my excitement on my own.
Like just about everybody else, I was disappointed by some of what came later, particularly the final future-set storyline, but the first four arcs and the Xorn storyline Riot at Xavier's and the Xorn storyline gave us some of Morrison's best superhero work to date. And any of you who saw it coming can laugh at me, but I remember that issue as the most surprising plot twist EVER for me personally, in a comic book.

that made me laugh. Alot.
One of my favorite storyline in recent memory would have to be Dangerous. *ducks a variety of furniture and fruits* I especially loved ASTONISHING X-MEn #10 where Danger recalls the battle from her perspective on her way to Genosha. And it had one hell of a laugh within it.
But as for favorite concept....that would be the House of M. I just really really love that universe. The red guard (Rogue, Mystique, Nightcrawler on the same team muahahaha) , the Magnus Royalty, all the various mutants in their new lives, Ororo turning africa into a fertile paradise. Simply brilliant. If only it had a chance as its own parallel universe.

Uncanny 383. It was the third issue into the Revolution line, and that really has little to do with nothing anyway.
http://perso.orange.fr/mracaud/uncannyxmen/383.jpg
Essentially, it's pretty much a generic team adventure (with what I thought was an AMAZING line-up, loved it) but what was most enthralling about it was that it was - essentially - an Ororo story with tons of inner monologue (though none of it life-changing) as well as her banking on other things than her super-amazing-powers-Iamawesomeness (Uncanny 449 comes to mind). She shows her skills as a thief, her former connections - it's just a great Storm story if I want to show people a nice, generic Storm story.
And I'll be frank, she's the reason I bothered with the X-Men period. So these kinds of issues are important, because I don't really want all of the issues to be huge changes happening. It's issues like this - where nothing important really develops but the characters are showing why they kick ass - that I tend to really like. Plus it's a nice internal look at her.

Either Cable & Deapool....9? (the one with Wade in the classic Marvel Girl outfit -AAAHHH! MY EYES!!!!) or the Astonishing issue (13 or 14 I think) where Scott/Emma shippers get pwned by Scott's "favorite costume"

To be honest, I do not know.
I've actuall only been reading X-men in the 00s (as in buying from store not back issues) and well, some have been good but I can't pick a favourite.
The Exiles story, "With an Iron Fist", is defiantely up there.
Other then that my mind goes a blank....well of courser there's always my fanboyism of Claremont's uses of The Fury.

Anyway...
Aside from the issue using the best villain in Marvel history, I liked what was done in this issue in relation to a lot of the mysteries behind the manipulation that went through Rogue's life, especially her childhood. This issue confirmed my suspicions of the Shadow King engineering the X-Men's destruction by manipulating Rogue into joining them to destroy them from within. It also points out the eerie aspect of Gambit and Rogue's relationship, since Gambit was intentionally a traitor. Gateway is also in this issue, and his juxtaposition with the Shadow King and how they are complete opposites is shown more clearly, as well as the connection with Destiny's Diaries (Uncanny X-Men #254). The issue provides more information about Mystique and Destiny's corruption, as well as their connection with Mastermind (Shadow King). Carol Danvers was missing from this issue, and it could have been more informative with her in it, but it's a hell of a revelation none the less. The Reavers were back in, and their involvement confirmed my suspicions of the Shadow King engineering the plight of Cylla Markham in Uncanny X-Men #'s 261, 269. The issue helped clarify Claremont's plans for Rogue, Gateway, Mystique, Destiny, the Shadow King, and others past 1991, which is the sole reason for why I read Claremont's books under current Marvel anyway.

Excalibur #14
http://www.uncannyxmen.net/covers/excalibur/excalibur2-14.jpg
It was just an awesome look through Xaviers past. It was told really well. One of Claremonts best post 2000 issues.
The only thing that bugged me was Logan and Carmen Pryde. There had never been any mention of them knowing each other before their first meetings respectively in Uncanny.
Kind of a crappy retcon unless you accept one of the possible reasons for this from www.uncannymen.com.
Carmen Pryde is the father of Katherine “Kitty” Pryde, the X-Man known as Shadowcat. When Carmen Pryde first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #129, both men acted as if they had never met each other. There are two possible explanations for this “continuity glitch”. First, Xavier could have used his mental powers to erase Pryde’s memories of serving with him, though his reasons for doing so are not apparent in this story. It is also possible that Carmen Pryde and Xavier never served together at all and his memories are being manipulated by Wanda or Magneto to make a point. Carmen’s presence in such a memory may simply serve to tie in his feelings of guilt about those who died in Genosha at the hands of his sister and his guilt for those who died under his command.
Logan appears alongside Xavier’s military unit. This is the first indication that Xavier knew and worked alongside Logan during his wartime experience. This is also odd since there was no apparent recognition between the two when Xavier recruited Wolverine in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Again, it is possible that Logan has been added to this memory for his psychological effect on Xavier. Logan has long been the conscience of the X-Men in many ways and has always questioned Xavier’s morality and decision-making. That may be his role in this visit to Xavier’s subconscious.
Still an awesome look through archive Xavier.

I know I am totally late to the game and the issue I am going with has already been stated but I have to proclaim my love for New X-men issue 115 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. First I should start off by saying Thank you to this wonderful team for crafting the mission the way they did because with out them I wouldn't have known the joy of comics as we all experience.
I loved this issue for many reasons but there is one reason why this got chosen over the countless others that have come from 2000 and on and that is this following exchange;
Logan: "Summers! For the love of God this kid's dying in agony."
Scott: "It's okay, Logan. John...Steve...I'm so sorry. I know there's something MORE than just this world. Deep breath. Don't be scared. Just look into my eyes."
I know that these are just comic books that many might look down upon, but this issue and those few pannels still move me to this day. Grants words allowed me to experience Scott's corruption after merging with the big A. I won't count out Quitely's fantastic pensils either, they really took Grant's words to a whole new level. That depiction of Scott at the bottom of the page with his eyes barely open has this affect on me where I feel like the forth wall is breaking down. Easily my favorite issue since the year 2000.

Very, very though, but i would go with Cable & Deadpool 25. I always disliked Cap. America, and i never was Cable's biggest fan, but that one gave Nathan so much development, explained his way of seeing the world and his role better than any other, and even made me feel some sympathy for Cap. America too.
I know that the original poster wanted only one, but i have to mention NXM 142. Cyclops and Wolverine get drunk on the Hellfire Club (actually, Wolverine drinks, Cyclops gets drunk), Scott opens up about how he feels about Jean, Emma, his role in the X-men, etc, and, although Logan stopped fighting with Cyke several years ago, he never behaved as a friend as much as he did at that moment. And that scene with Sabretooth on the bathroom was hilarious.

Cable and Deadpool #42
While First Class is really my favorite series now, this issue, this issue is why I love the book. The relationship between Wade and Nate has grown so much since #1 and it's something that actually didn't feel forced. The develop of Providence and Cable's ideals all blown up in the blink of an eye is quite sad. This whole arc, mainly #41 and #42 really feels more like farewell issues for the series. At the end of this issue when Wade bodyslides to his apartment and realizes that the statue is just a teleporter and all Cable wanted to do was save him was so touching. The,"I wasn't worth it, I won't let you down Nate" dialogue on the final page was pretty heartfelt and it's a perfect example of why I love Fabian's writing.

i might have to go with the final issue of here comes tomorrow. loved the future xmen lead by cassie. loved the pet sentinel screaming out tom's name as he falls into the sea. the one to two page summaries that tie up everything about sublime and what happens to the xmen if scott quits. beak's legacy, brutal deaths every other page or so, cuckoos self-destructing before the feeders get to them.....just incredible payoff.
and the last page is the foundation stone for the franchise ever since. it's better that morrison left at this point, because he was not going to top this issue.

1. X-Factor #14 - So thoroughly enjoyable and hilarious. Monet beating up Jamie, Guido touchingly confronts the wife of the man he killed (while mind controlled by Tryp), PAD teases Rictor's sexuality during a hilarious conversation with Madrox that leaves both of them WET, crazy bitch girl scouts, and a day at the zoo with Doc Samson! Its really an example of these characters being people with awesome superpowers and adventures and that's why I love this issue. Plus, Raimondi was AWESOME--he's one of the best artists who can both tell a good story and still make it beautiful.
2. X-Men #192 - This actually takes the cake from X-Men's milestone issue. Lady Mastermind enters with a bang!, the New X-Men co-star but cover your eyes, Anole!, and Rogue rebels against Cyclops' authority (all the much sweeter that she'll have to face her own mistakes), Bachalo at his best, and Rogue's team ENGAGE! as the battle against the Children intensifies.
3. X-Men #200 - This issue was thrilling. It was unpredictable and had some of the best pacing I've ever seen. Betrayals that I knew were coming were executed so well that it was almost still a surprise. Really one of the few issues that I could read in surround sound.
4. X-Men #187 (Last issue of Milligan's run; Pulse learns the hard way; Polaris says hell no; Gambit exits)
5. X-Factor #1 (Debut of XFI; Rictor suicidal and Rahne is loud as hell)
6. Uncanny X-Men #414 (Northstar joins the X-Men; an exploding boy story yet I have no puns)
7. Uncanny X-Men #406 (X-Corporation; the Gen X girls reunite and kick butt; Mastermind and Mystique boss hog)
8. New X-Men #38 (Quest for Magik; Pixie makes demons see awesome things)
9. New Mutants v.2 #5 (The New Mutants encounter the Reavers; Joshua Foley (Elixir) debuts)
10. New X-Men #119 (Germ Free Generation; Angel Salvadore meets Wolverine)
Honorable mentions:
X-Factor #3 - Layla is super creepy here. A little bit before she really started to grow on me with her hilarity, but she really draws me with her enigmatic nature and indirect way of murdering people! Plus M sings naked and Rictor catches a peek. lol.
X-Factor #20 - I know the X-Cell arc didn't gain that well of a response, I think it brought things forward rather quickly and has some interesting new subplots for the book to follow through on in the future. Plus, I found it insanely hilarious; three scenes that come to mind alone provide that ('Ick', 'She professes to "know things"' and 'this is a new shirt'). It would've made it on the list but it felt a little cut short and X-Cell wasn't as interesting as I thought they should have been.

In no particular order...
1.) Uncanny X-Men #404 -- say what you will about Casey's run, I thought it was fantastic. The X-Corps storyline, while having quite a few flaws, was very enjoyable and this issue stuck out in my mind solely because of Mastermind and her taunting of Chamber. She was handled so gracefully in the issue, every line she said was so delicious. I still think they could've used her in Carey's X-Men rather than Regan, but I do like Regan also. She will just never amount up to her half-sister's classy-ness.
2.) GLX-Mas Special -- I include only this GLA-themed event, but really, the GLA mini-series and the Summer Spectacular would totally be up there if I could include general Marvel series. This has the label of X-Men, so I figure it counts. The GLX-Mas Special was hilarious, from Squirrel Girl's adventures to the battle against Dr. Tannenbaum. However, it also had that great mixture of seriousness, such as Doorman's father dying and Mr. Immortal missing Dinah Soar during the holiday season. It's just a beautiful addition to an excellent series of issues.
3.) Cable & Deadpool #12 -- surprisingly, I'm not only listing this because of Anaconda's adorable chibi form. The whole issue was brilliant, I loved Agent X, I loved the Fixer helping them, I loved Weasel, I loved the dramatic scene between Domino and Cable. It was such a great conclusion to the Burnt Offering, it really made me like Cable.
4.) X-Men Annual #1 -- I love all of Carey's run, but this one holds a special place in my heart because of the way he writes Frenzy. She returned to her unique costume and she had some classic lines in the issue. I've been waiting since Eve of Destruction for Frenzy to return and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I also loved the conflict between Rogue and Mystique, and I actually like Aurora for the only time in history.

Excalibur vol 3 issue 14.
Great great story. And Genosha Excalibur rocked harder than AC/DC. This issue was the only house of m comic that i really loved. I cant remember much in the way of details, as i havent read comics in a while so i would need to refresh my memory
but it was just solid. Really good character exploration stuff
One that immediately springs to mind for me is X-treme X-men #24.
Agreed. I was going to say this but i thought of that last excalibur issue. Excalibur 14 dealt with House of M, so i can say that XXM 24 is the best solo issue in a long time.
I'm torn.
Ooh! The issue of X-Treme where Kitty finds the footage of her father dying. That makes me friggin' bawl!
I dont remember this issue.
But thats not surprising since i havent read XXM in a while
so
best issue : Excalibur 14
best solo: XXM 24
and just for the hells of it
best story/mini : Mekanix
