Been reading all vol. 1 Cap books lately (from my collection) and I've determined that when Frank Robbins began drawing, my interest in the series went out the window. I don't know Frank Robbins personally, but he destroyed an American Icon when he drew Captain America. His Invaders' work was equally horrible.

I'm not too fond of the CapWolf story. While it was nice to see Werewolf by Night, I rolled my eyes to the back of head when the writers just felt they had to have Cable appear and get into a fight with Cap while the latter was a werewolf.

I'm also not a big fan of the story where Cap loses his American citizenship.

There were times in the original series when I didn't read Cap... but I WOULD NOT read Cap during the Gruenwald run. Blech. And that Ron Lim art. Urp!

Best parts: Lee/Steranko, Lee/Colan, Lee/Romita, Englehart/S. Buscema, Stern/Byrne & Waid/Garney

The Glut/Buscema stuff with the Ameridroid, where it was first revealed that Cap was pulled out of the ice early, then stuck back in. I hate when they do that.

When did Cap lose his citizenship?

I love Jack Kirby, but when he returned to Cap in 1975, it was pretty painful to read. The artwork wasn't bad, but his stories left a lot to be desired. Kirby was writing some dated stuff.

"The Night People" arc has to be one of the worst Captain America stories ever. Sorry Jack!

During Waid and Garney's first run on the book.

I'd have to agree, sadly enough. I still whince when I pick up the Marvel Treasury Edition of "Captain America's Bicentennial Battles".

The arc where Waid resurrects the late and unlamented Sharon Carter.

Without digging through my stash, I'd have to agree with the Kirby run in the mid-70s. That was pretty bad, and even the artwork seemed rushed to me.

Y'know, seeing your comments on Frank Robbins remind me of a story I once heard about his CAP run:

An artist (I wanna say Gil Kane) was signing comics and a fan gave him some of his old CAP comics and stated he really enjoyed his Cap art. As the artist was signing them, the fan then started to trash Frank Robbins' Cap work which was being published at the time. Very unkind and generally negative comments.

The artist stopped mid-signature, gave the fan back his comics (including the one not even completely signed) and told him to beat it. Apparently he wasn't only bothered by the fan's comments about the artwork, but he was a friend of Robbins' who was taken aback by his friend getting trash talked like that.

I don't blame the creator. I'd have done the same.

My main point is that Frank Robbins did so much artistically earlier in his career. Unfortunately, in my viewpoint, I will always equate him with his poor version of Captain America and The Falcon.

CapWolf is so painfully bad. I actully quit reading the book back in the day becaue of that run. And yes Ron Lims art does suck.

I would say the "Iron Cap" issues were worse than CapWolf. It's sad that these were the last issues of Gruenwald, a great creator and writer, but an even better editor.
