Ghost Rider #9 isn't a Civil War, CoW, or Intiative tie-in.
So that big Casualties of War banner across the top of the cover is a mistake?
lol

GR 9 is Part 2 of 2 of the Sleepy Hollow Story. I haven't read it yet, but supposedly it ties in with Punisher War Journal also.

It would be so much easier if Marvel.com updated their gallery every Wedsnesday instead of waiting. Oh well, just one more comic to buy tomorrow. And on the topic tomorrow I'll be able to give placements for CW: The Confession, TB #112, NA #28, MK #8, and GR #9.

Finally finished CW 6 & 7!
Wanted to cast my vote at putting Frontline 10 before CW 6 & The Return after CW7.
There's enough in FL10 that happens before CW6 and no CW spoilers.
The Return doesn't add anything to CW7 except seeing "the one who returns" in one of the fight scenes. Plus the second story in The Return happens so early on in the timeline that you almost can't place the whole book.
Besides, why break up the momentum from 6 to 7? After wading through 100 or so issues, it's too climactic to interrupt them.
Anyway, those are my thoughts...

Here's some placement:
CW: The Confession: It takes place before and after Cap's death, so I'd put it after CA #25
GR #9: I'm going to say right after GR #8
MK #8: After MK #7
NA #28: After NA #27
TB #112: After TB #11
None of the issues really tell apparent placement except for after the one before it.

She-Hulk 15 & 16 were in the inative?
Not officially, but She-Hulk being hired by Sheild to hunt down Hulklevel villians fits the Initiative agenda. Besides, it takes Jen away from defending Cap in the public court case, (albeit, a no-contest now).
The next issue, we see Jen and Fury on the same cover, and the issue after that, Jen gets stuck into Iron Man when she finds out Tony sent her cousin to Planet Hulk. It all looks like Initiative stuff to me.
jackolover,
Any chance you could combine your after Civil War books in with the Initiative books, so I can see the right order? Ot are they already in the right order (with all the aftermaths coming before all of the Initiatives)?

Yes. you're right. They are in order already.
My only alteration to the CW system is that the Initiative books won't be interspersed. eg Mighty Avengers will run consecutively, because they read as a whole story. So I have lines of horizontal issues on my wall. It starts with CW Initiative, and consecutive issues of Avengers Initiative (6 issues) will be under it. Then IM, Ms Marvel, MA, NA, Tbolts, She-hulk. When the Fallen Son issues come out, I will slot them in the CW, after Cap #25, and CW: Confession. After that, we start another CW sequence, with WWH in interspersed issues again.

i know these two don't really matter the the order of the list but many people have them to complete their collection: Spiderham:Ultimate Civil War and Civil War poster book.
Like I said nowhere to put them in but some would like them in the list just throwing that out there.
Also for the initiative the daily bugle that came out on the 14th is about the new inititative and has news about it so just a heads up.
Great work to everyone who has helped especially Thor's Hammer and Curleyfries:)

Does anyone want to place Silent War #2? I have it in the middle of CW.
Edit : I'm not sure how in-continuity Agents of Atlas is, because agent Jimmy Woo appeared in Secret Wars just before CW, so I interleaved the 'Agents' amongst the CW books? Now and Then you see a picture of Ape-man on Maria Hills desk in some books.

First off, Thor's Hammer thank you very much for the full listing. I've been out of comic collecting for years, and it's been really tough getting information together to read the CW arc when starting from scratch.
I have a few questions that have popped up that I hope someone can answer. First shouldn't Thunderbolts #6-9 also be in the list? I've only glanced at them so far, but the flip-through looked like they might belong? Similarly, looking at Hulk #100-103 I don't see how that series fits; it looks like Hulk's not even on the planet? What's the connection?
And I noticed what may be a typo in "Civil War Files Civil War: Choosing Sides" where shouldn't that be two books: "Civil War Files" and "Civil War: Choosing Sides" ?
Thanks

Thor's Hammer, are you going to be adding the Back in Black issues of the Spider-Man comics to your Initiative storyline, if not that's okay, and secondly will you be going to do a World War Hulk timeline as well when those issues come out? just curious, not that you have too.

I don't know if you guys are gonna be including the 5 'Fallen Son' one-shots in your CW lists, but if so, I've placed the two we've seen so far thus...
Civil War: The Initative
Fallen Son: Wolverine
Fallen Son: Avengers
Iron man #15
I think they work well there. It's still right after Captain America's death and as we see in the 'Wolverine' issue, Tony Stark is already director of Sheild. I've put the two Fallen Son issues together because they clearly follow on directly from each other. Assuming that this continues to be the case with the remaining three issues, then they would also be placed before Iron man #15

Well, my personal reading order is slightly different to both Curleyfries' list and Thor's Hammer's list, not least because it's nowhere near as complete.
For instance, I'm not collecting Moon Knight and I'm not overly interested in the Initiative, so my reading order is much more just Civil War. And that means only the issues of series like Black Panther or Ms. marvel that tie directly into Civil War.
Having said that, I have placed some of the issues you've mentioned...
Civil War: The Initiative #1
Fallen Son: Wolverine #1
Fallen Son: The Avengers #1
Iron Man #15
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #17
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #18
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #19
I've placed the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man issues here because Peter is a lot less angry/psychotic than he is in the current Amazing Spider-Man arc, which in my opinion takes place pretty much straight after Civil War #7. I've then placed Sensational Spider-Man #35-#37 a bit later on (just before Civil War: The Initiative #1) because although he's still in a pretty dark place his mood seems somewhat lighter. By the time of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #17-#18, he's much more back to his old self. So that's why I've placed them here.
I stress that this placing isn't definitive yet, just my best guess-timate for the time being. I hope this helps! :)
I can post my whole Civil War reading order if anyone's interested in seeing it, just for comparisons sake. Like I say, it's pretty similar to the lists that have already been posted on this thread but there are some differances. For instance, I disagree with Thor's Hammer & Curleyfries' placing of New Avengers #21-#25. Anyway, let me know if you wanna see it.

Same here! :)
At the moment I've got Sensational #35 after ASM #537.
As you can see on my list, I've put Sensational #36 between FF #543 and Front Line #11, after ASM #539. I'm pretty sure that's correct since in Sensational #35, he and Connors talk about his aunt May.
However, if that's correct, Sensational #35 is also correct because aunt May isn't being discussed. One problem though: Spidey is back in black starting from ASM #539 so Sensational #35 should also be after #539.
I think the logical solution would be to move them up even more, because in Sensational #36 Spidey reacts pretty calm about aunt May being shot.
So anyway, hopefully that wasn't too complicated, and about half-way through I realized I was saying what you said all along (putting Sensational #35 - 37 just before The Initiative).
One final question, is there another issue we can put between ASM #539 and Sensational #35 where Peter reacts more heavily about aunt May? If not, that first calm reaction would seem a little odd.
Lucalias
P.S. aunt May's been shot in ASM #539, right? If it happened in #538, then you shouldn't mind my final question, because we'd see a stronger reaction in ASM #539 already
P.S. 2 sorry for my rant :P

Yes, Aunt May gets shot in ASM #538...right at the end, it's the cliff-hanger. As for an issue between ASM #539 and SSM #35, I'm assuming ASM#540 will go there when it's out. ASM #539 ends with Spidey about to go off and find the person who's responsible for Aunt May's shooting and kill them! So, I reckon ASM #540 and possibly #541 as well will still be set before SSM #35. Only time will tell though.
OK, because it was asked for, here's my own personal chronological Civil War reading order. As I said a few posts back, it's not definitive like Thor's Hammer's and Curleyfries' list is. It features only the issues I've bought, so no Moon Knight, Runaways or Young Avengers I'm afraid. And I'm not really that interested in The Initiative, so it's just Civil War that my list is concerned with.
My list is pretty similar to the ones that have already been posted. Maybe some issues are in a slightly different order but that's inevitable when you consider that events in some issues are happening simultainiously or right in the middler of another issue. I'm pretty confident that my list doesn't contain any glaring errors but having said that, I'm more than happy to hear from anyone who things that they've spotted a mistake in my ordering...as long as they can back it up with a well reasoned argument. ;)

Hmmm...very interesting question. I have no idea about this...mind you, as Wikipedia is the font of all dis-information and half-truth I wouldn't take it as gospel.
Having said that, the way it says "A new version of the Sinister Six apparently banded together during the Civil War" makes me think that this was maybe something that was referred to in character dialogue, rather than something we actually got to see. I haven't a clue when this might have been mentioned though.
Hopefully someone else out there will be able to shed some light on this.

I did a search but did not find the answer I was looking for. What do you consider essential reading in the Civil War story arch in regards to the trades?

the main civil war book is generally excellent, but it ends...flat.
wolverine is really really good, i enjoyed this and it completely outshines loebs rather boring efforts in the monthly.
fantastic 4 is average, again it tarts well, but some of the plots just appear to dissapear, which is weird for a writer of jms calibre.
personally them are the only two i read in trades, got most everything else in singles, but wolverine is class. guggenheimshould have stayed on the book.

Hi all! I have been a silent observer of this forum for quite a while and I was wondering if Thor's Hammer will be posting any more updates or if he is done now that Civil War proper is done? I am hoping for more updates but I realize that this story and the ramifications could go on in one form or another for a long time.
Either way I just wanted to say thanks to all those who helped to bang out this reading order! :D

Ok, so I've heard enough about the Civil War storyline from my comic-reading friends that my interest has been aroused to the point that I'm going to try getting into it. I've never really read comics at all before, and from the reading lists I've seen here, it looks rather intimidating. Would it be at all possible to get a somewhat shorter list, containing only those issues that are neccesary to understanding what's happening in the story while leaving out those which are only periphrially related?
Thanks in advance!

In terms of bare bones, CIVIL WAR #1-7. It's handily collected in a recently released trade paperback, I believe.
For someone getting into the event at this late date, the various trades are probably the way to go.

I have a question about these Fantastic Four books. I've gone through Thor's list and have them all... I was just wondering when it says Fantastic Four #67-70 are these the from the main FF title? They would have been released in 1967 then.
If they are indeed the actual 1967 books then would someone mind explaining what they have to do with the backstory for the Civil War?
And if they are not part of the original FF set what book set are they from?
Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
First time poster here.
Although I used to read and collect comics quite furiously when was a teen in the 90's, I stopped doing so once I discovered drugs and girls. Now that I've outgrown the drugs and stick to one girl, I'm getting back into comic books and it looks like I've missed a ton!
After reading about the Avengers: Disassembled/House of M/Civil War story arc on wikipedia, I have decided that I must read these as soon as possible. So here's my question:
For House of M and Civil War, are the 8 and 7 issue mini-series enough to get the whole sotryline or are there other crossover issues that are vital to the storyline? From what I gather the Avengers part of the arc can be read in a TBP.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Well as was previously mentioned in the beginning of Civil War 3 theres a newspaper that show Cap and Falcon beating up Shocker, Lizard and Doctor Octopus. So that is what wiki is referring to.
However in Civil War - Choosing Sides, Spider-Man has Boomerang, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Hydroman, and Sandman tied up. Electro is mentioned as the potential sixth member. Not sure how canon that's considered, but it's in there.

None are really essentials compared to the main books. If you're looking for a little more to the story I would say def. pick up Frontline. It's a good read and is fairly interesting. Don't worry as much about the other books unless you really want to fill it out.

Amazing Spider-Man tie ins were really good, and the Captain America issues were also really good (check out "Civil War: The Confession", but only after reading Cap 25). I also thought the Thunderbolts issues were good (forshadowing the use of supervillians to track down unregistered heroes).

Here's a small update. I'm going to place the Sensational and FNSM Spider-Man issues after the ASM arc ends. I have no idea where I should place the New Avengers tie-ins and I'm not sure anymore if the Fallen Son issues still work right after The Initiative. Anyway, if anyone knows where to place the missing issues or spots a mistake, don't hesitate to answer. :)

Found a post on a forum that has a great description of everything surrounding Civil War, I cannot find the post where i found this, this is not my work, I had saved it to a word file a while back, so thought I would share:
The Civil War Timeline (MASSIVE SPOILERS!)
________________________________________
Note: Take this timeline with a grain of salt or two. As seen here, Mr. Tom Brevoort himself said I've gotten some things wrong. Nonetheless, enjoy!
Marvel Boy 1-6
Noh-Varr, a Kree Warrior in an alternate dimension, is captured by the SHIELD of that reality and imprisoned in a super prison called the Cube. At some point he will be come to held in our dimension's version of the Cube, where he will be released during the Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways book.
Fantastic Four 67-70/500-508
Dr. Doom decides he has been using the wrong approach to his plans by using science over sorcery. Making a pact with a cabal of netherdemons, he gains vast magical powers and immediately goes after the Fantastic Four.
He traps Reed and Sue Richards' son Franklin in Hell itself, forcing the Four to surrender to him where he takes them to his castle in Latveria and begins torturing them. Dr. Strange is able to help Reed learn magic, which he uses to free his family and banish Doom to the Hell dimension.
Reed launches a coup on Latervia with Doom gone, setting himself up as monarch of the country. This sets off an international incident, as the UN and SHIELD look to stop him. In reality, this was all part of a plan of Reed's to make everyone think he'd gone mad while he took Doom's consciousness and imprisoned it in a small dimension he'd created.
This plan goes awry and Doom's mind possesses various members of the Fantastic Four. Finally, he was in the Thing's body and about to kill the Human Torch. Reed, using a specially designed gun, had no choice but to shoot, leaving the Thing dead and returning Doom's mind back to his body in Hell. Reed and his family later were able to bring the Thing back to life, while Doom would remain in Hell until right before Civil War begins.
Thor 80-85: Ragnarok
Ragnarok, the final war of the Nordic gods, occurs. Thor is able to stop the endless circle of it, but is forced into entering the Sleep Of The Gods (a death of sorts) to do so. No one in the Marvel U knows what happened to him, as is mentioned during Avengers Disassembled.
Pulse 1-5
Jessica Jones accets J. Jonah Jameson's offer to join the Daily Bugle staff.
Norman Osborn is officially revealed to the world as being the Green Goblin, during an investigation led by Jones and Ben Urich. During an escape he injures Jones, incurring the wrath of Luke Cage. He is brought down brutally by Cage with an assist from Spider-Man and put into custody.
Marvel Knights Spider-Man 1-12
Osborn escapes custody, this time taken down by Spider-Man himself. He considers this a violation of the truce he and Peter had, starting a plan he had planned for such a happening. The Scorpion (Mac Gargan), whom Osborn had told Peter's secret identity to, kidnaps Aunt May to set it off.
Spider-Man goes on a crazed hunt to find her, taunted by phone calls by the unknown-to-him Gargan. He faces many of his Rogue's Gallery, also part of Osborn's plan to wear him down. After battling a strange acting Dr. Octopus and hearing stories about Oscorp offices being broken into, Peter goes to talk to Osborn in his cell at Ryker's. Osborn will only say his life is in danger.
At the same time, Venom (Eddie Brock) is dying of cancer and is going to give up being Venom. He sells the symbiote at an auction attended by many super villains. Crimelord Don Fortunato wins the auction, giving the symbiote to his son Angelo.
Angelo attacks Spider-Man, planning to kill him to make a name for himself. However, the symbiote rejects Angelo during the battle and leaves him while they are airborne, Angelo crashing to his death.
Soon after this, Gargan reveals himself and the plan to Peter. He tells of a secret that has been going on since the 1950s, that big busineses have been creating and helping supervillains to keep superheroes out of their hair. Norman Osborn was a favorite of the businesses, who helped to make him very rich. However, after he went crazy, he became a liability to them. Now that he is incarcerated, he makes a very easy target for them to kill. Osborn wants Peter to break him out of prison, or Aunt May dies. Gargan also reveals Dr. Octopus has been brainwashed by the same people to kill Osborn.
Spider-Man and the Black Cat break Osborn out of prison, only to walk into a trap he set up. He has created a group of villains called the Sinister Twelve, all ready to kill Peter. Mac Gargan reveals himself as the new Venom, the symbiote coming to him not long after his meeting with Peter.
The Avengers and the Fantastic Four arrive to help Peter, alerted by SHIELD who was in turn alerted by Mary Jane. Osborn captures Mary Jane and plans to kill her, but is interrupted by the brainwashed Doc Ock. Spider-Man is able to save Mary Jane and rescue Aunt May during the chaos

Baron Zemo & the Thunderbolts work on Project: Liberator, a machine which will remove all transnormal power from Earth (including superpowered individuals) and help usher in a new era of peace. The Avengers learn of this plan and do not trust it. Iron Man masquerades as the Cobalt Man, who joins the Thunderbolts as a mole.
As Zemo is about to go through with the plan, the Avengers arrive to stop him. The machine is activated in the chaos, Moonstone absorbing all the transnormal power it collected. It is revealed she didn't trust Zemo herself, and had a plan in place to absorb the energy in case he tried to betray them.
She goes crazy with all of the new power, attacking everyone. Former Thunderbolt Mach-3, in prison, watches this unfold. He gets in contact with Carol Danvers, the Homeland Security Liason, having her help him contact another former Thunderbolt Jolt, who is on Counter-Earth.
Jolt arrives and drains the transnormal energy out of Moonstone, who is still super powerful due to her two Moonstones. The two teams work together to stop her, removing the Moonstones from her body and leaving her in a catatonic state. Zemo takes the Moonstones and escapes. The Thunderbolts disband after all of this. Mach-3, given a pardon for his role in stopping Moonstone, vows to start up a new team.
Avengers 500-503: Disassembled, Avengers Finale
The Avengers are betrayed by the Scarlet Witch, who has gone insane due to her powers. Her use of Chaos Magic takes her powers to new heights, as she is now able to alter reality in much more powerful ways than seen before. The team is decimated, several members dying during the conflict. In the aftermath of this, they disband.
Tony Stark announces he is retiring as Iron Man, and someone new will take his role, even though this is a lie to the public.
Drax The Destroyer 1-4
Drax, while being transported to an intergalatic prison, crashes on Earth where he is apparently killed by a Skrull warrior also on the ship with him. He comes back to life in a new body, with his intelligence fully intact. He becomes the protector of a teenage girl named Cammi, the two taken to the intergalatic prison at the end of the series. They will remain there until the escape in Annihilation, where they feature prominently in the storyline.
New Thunderbolts 1-6
Mach-3 starts up a new incarnation of the Thunderbolts. He is secretly being funded by Baron Strucker and Hydra, who is using the team as a distraction while he pursues his plans of world domination. Mach-3 only goes along with this as he plans to stop Strucker at some point.
In the Thunderbolts' first battle, Captain Marvel Genis-Vell arrives to help them. Atlas (secretly being controlled by the Purple Man) goes into a rage, not wanting him to disrupt the team and accidently kills him. He throws his body into the Hudson River, where Genis' body goes into a cocoon.
Strucker finally makes him move, planning on nuking Manhattan. Genis arises from his cocoon as the new Photon, helping the Thunderbolts stop Strucker. Strucker escapes in a small ship, vowing to return.
Wolverine 20-31: Enemy Of The State
Wolverine is killed by Hydra and brought back as their mind controlled assassin to kill the President of the United States, as mentioned by Goliath in Civil War #1.
Hydra is going through a Civil War of their own, as Baron Strucker's wife Elsbeth and her mutant bodyguard Gorgon are trying to usurp control of Hydra from him. Since Strucker is still missing after escaping from the Thunderbolts, they create a clone of him to take his place. The clone isn't physically accurate to Strucker (looking much older and weathered), but Gorgon using supernatural means to make everyone believe it is him.
The Strucker clone, acting on his own as he was made to do, sends Wolverine to kill Nick Fury. SHIELD stops Logan, undoing his brainwashing. Gorgon kills the Strucker clone as a result of this failure. Wolverine goes on a mission of revenge, taking out Gorgon and most of Hydra in the process.
The Irredeemable Ant-Man 1-2
We meet SHIELD Agents Chris McCarthy and Eric O'Grady. In the midst of SHIELD undoing Wolverine's brainwashing, McCarthy steals an experimental Ant-Man suit Hank Pym has been working on. This takes place about 6 months before the events seen in Civil War: Choosing Sides.
Captain America 1-14: The Winter Soldier
Aleksander Lukin, a rogue Soviet with dreams of power, "kills" The Red Skull via his cybernetic assassin the Winter Soldier. In doing so, Lukin gains possession of the Cosmic Cube, although it is almost drained of power.
He steals a WMD built by AIM for the purpose of powering the Cube, setting it off in Philadelphia and killing many. This is the "bombing in Philly" Goliath mentioned in Civil War #1. Captain America and SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter discover the Winter Soldier is really Steve's deceased ally, Bucky Barnes. Fury has known this for awhile, but was keeping the info from Steve. We shall see the Winter Soldier towards the end of the Civil War in his own one shot.
Secret War 1-5/The Pulse 6-9
In a flashback taking place before Avengers Disassembled, Nick Fury discovers the Prime Minister of Latveria, Lucia Von Bardas, has been backing super villains, making them acts of terrorism. He goes to the President with this information, but is dismissed. He forms of covert team of superheroes (Captain America, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Black Widow, Luke Cage, and newcomer Daisy Johnson) to overthrow the government, apparently successful.
One year later (present day), Von Bardas (now a cyborg) returns and attacks Cage, putting him in a coma. She later brings a large group of cybernetic villains to New York, planning ot use them as a giant bomb to blow up the city. A large group of Marvel heroes stop them, saving the city.
Fury reveals what he did the past year, going as far to erase the memory of the heroes involved. Wolverine goes berserk and kills him, but it turns out to be a LMD (Life Model Decoy). The real Fury escaped during the battle and has now gone underground.
Maria Hill becomes the Acting Director of SHIELD. Daisy Johnson, given an ultra high level of security clearance, won't tell her anything about Fury. Hill takes Johnson off duty, where she'll stay until New Avengers #20.
Luke comes out of his coma, Fury appearing via hologram to apologize to him and Jessica Jones for the hurt he caused them.
New Avengers 1-6: Breakout
Electro is contacted by a mystery man to cause a blackout in New York City and thus free all the supervillains behind held on the prison the Raft. The total number of villains that escape is 42, which will be the same number of the project Reed Richards is working on in Civil War #2.
A new team of Avengers comes together to stop the escaping villains.
Captain America and Iron Man announce to Director Hill they are forming a new team of Avengers. She says no, but Captain America says he has the authority to do so. (There is actually a continuity error in this scene, Spider-Man asks "Where's Nick Fury?" when he was among the heroes assembled at the end of Secret War #5 when Fury gave his confession and announced he was going underground. But the massive delays of Secret War #5 very likely contributed to this.)
The New Avengers discover a rogue SHIELD faction in the Savage Land, stealing vibranium, as well as battling Sauron. Hill and SHIELD arrive to take them into custody (Hill mentioning the Director of Weapon X was very thankful to have Sauron captured). After they left, Iron Man tells the Avengers he has analyzed the data from the past few months and realizes someone in stockpiling super powered criminals.
Iron Man 1-6: Extremis
Iron Man gains new powers due to the Extremis techno-virus, his body now merged with his armor
Captain America 16-17
Nick Fury is now underground, Maria Hill in charge of SHIELD. Steve and Iron Man have formed the New Avengers, which has made him fall somewhat out of favor with SHIELD's new bosses.
Nick Fury is revealed to be helping the Winter Soldier track down an AIM terrorist cell
Amazing Spider-Man 515-524
A childhood friend of Spider-Man gets super powers and ends up burning down Spider-Man's apartment as well as Aunt May's house. The bond between Spider-Man and Iron Man begins here.
Iron Man invites Spider-Man's family to live at Stark Tower.
Spider-Man gets involved in stopping a Hydra plot to blow up New York City, battling a team of evil Avenger copies in the process. You just know Iron Man saw the Thor one and started taking notes.
New Avengers 7-10: The Sentry
Iron Man meets with the Illuminati. Reed Richards says the total number of villains that escaped from the Raft was 46 and not 42 (no idea what this way about...).
The Sentry joins the team, his Tower revealed to be hidden atop Stark Tower.
The Ilumanati meet again, Tony hiding the Savage Land incident from them.

Many Marvel heroes are now living the life they always wanted, but some quickly realize things are amiss. Things are restored right at the end, but millions of mutants are left depowered in the process. Wanda vanishes, shown to be living in a remote village in Europe. The massive energy signature created by this process is shown hovering above the Earth

House Of M: The Day After
Cyclops opens the X-Mansion to all remaining mutants as a sanctuary.
The President of the United States declares a national emergency due to the confusion over the mutants being depowered, leading to the Office Of National Emergency (O*N*E) being activated, with the shady General Lazer in charge.
The new teams of X-Factor and New Excalibur are both formed to deal with the fallout of House of M.
Sentinel Squad O*N*E 1-5
O*N*E creates a Sentinel Squad program headed up by Dr. Valerie Cooper and James Rhodes. These are human piloted Sentinels designed partially by Tony Stark. A group of five are assigned to the X-Mansion to keep an eye on the arriving mutants
X-Men: The 198 1-5
More and more mutants arrive at the mansion, calling themselves the 198 (the estimated number of remaining mutants left after House Of M). They become increasingly unhappy with the situation, as General Lazer and O*N*E are making the place more of a detention area than a refuge. A mutant named Johnny Dee, who can control mutants, secretly forms an alliance with Lazer. This paves the way for the events in Civl War: X-Men 1-4.
Generation M 1-5
We meet reporter Sally Floyd, who is doing stories on depowered mutants. We also meet her nemesis New York Congressman Sykes, who is very much for registering mutants.
After escaping a mutant serial killer, she takes a job at the Daily Bugle.
Son Of M 1-6
In the wake of his connection to House Of M, Quicksilver (stripped of his powers at the end) has become very depressed. After a suicide attempt, his ex-wife Crystal takes him to stay with her on the Inhumans' base on the moon.
There, Pietro realizes he can use the Terrigen Crystals to restore his powers. He gains time travel powers instead, deciding to steal the crystals, return to Earth, and restore all of the mutants' powers.
He goes to Genosha and begins doing just so. However, the process overloads the mutants' powers and causes them to no longer be able to handle their powers. Magneto, also powerless as a result of House Of M, confronts Pietro.
The US government, who has been spying on Magneto, arrives in an attempt to steal the Terrigen Crystals Pietro has for their own purposes. The Inhumans also arrive on the scene, seeking the crystals. The government agents escape with them, Black Bolt calling for war against the humans. Quicksilver will show up later in X-Factor, opening a clinic to restore depowered mutants.
New Thunderbolts 12-14
Baron Zemo is revealed to be forcing the Purple Man to manipulate the Thunderbolts since they reformed, as Zemo wants them to be an optimal fighting unit for an upcoming battle he foresaw with the Moonstones. If they lose the battle, existance will be destroyed.
He comes to Homeland Security's Committee of Superhuman Affairs with this information, showing it to its leader Peter Gyrich. Gyrich believes him as well, enlisting the help of Carol Danvers and Dr. Hank Pym as per Zemo's request. The New Thunderbolts are contacted to attack and shame the New Avengers, which they do so. This serves as an ultimate test of their abilities, impressing Zemo.
Carol quits Homeland Security as a result of this, even though she knows it was necessary. She takes up the mantle of Ms. Marvel again.
New Avengers 11-15
The New Avengers track the Silver Samurai, one of the Raft escapees, to Japan. They are aided by Ronin, an ally of Daredevil's. In the process, they capture Madame Hydra instead, but double agent Spider-Woman lets her go. Captain America finds out. Spider-Woman tells Captain America about her past. (In the flashback, she is shown telling Hydra about the Godseye Satellite that will figure into the Hulk's book).
Nick Fury contacts the New Avengers via hologram, telling them to trust Jessica.
The New Avengers go public. They make a deal with J. Jonah Jameson, offering him exclusive stories if he lays off Spider-Man. He agrees, but quickly goes back on his word.

Ares is called by Zeus to stop him, leading a successful attack upon the Mikaboshi. We will see Ares again post-Civil War with the Mighty Avengers.
The Sentry 1-8
Bob tries to deal with his mindstate, but isn't completely successful as will be seen later on in New Avengers #17.
Oddly enough, Nick Fury appears in this arc. This has to be an LMD as well, even though I'm sure this was more of a goof up than anything.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man 1-4, Marvel Knights Spider-Man 19-22, Amazing Spider-Man 525: The Other
Spider-Man goes through a rebirth process, appearing to die in the process. He comes out of this with new powers and abilities he never had before. Baron Strucker is inside a chemical vat, recuperating from injuries caused when his escape pod crashed. Zemo arrives and stops him, awakening the Baron. Zemo wants the Baron to work with him as part of his master plan, Strucker agreeing.
Photon's powers begin to go crazy, causing pockets of time and space to open up everywhere. Songbird looks into one of these pockets, seeing an image of Baron Zemo and Iron Man shaking hands underneath the seal of the President of the United States.
As Photon's powers now threaten to annihilate all of existance, Zemo reveals himself to the Thunderbolts and tells them of everything. He was the one who put Genis in a cocoon to save his life, planning on Genis helping the Thunderbolts become a stronger team. However, Zemo used the Moonstones wrong and now Genis is completely out of control and must be killed. Zemo is able to stop Genis, dismantling his body into numerous pieces and banishing each one to a different pocket of reality.

He questions the coincidence of it all, but Tony assures him that's all it was. Later, we see Tony did indeed hire the Titanium Man to attack and try to prove his point about the act not being needed.
New Avengers 16-20: The Collective
The mutant energy at the end of House of M hits Earth, hitting a man named Michael Pointer. He goes on a bloody rampage across the planet, heading for Genosha. In the process, he kills Alpha Flight.
The energy is revealed to be under the control of Xorn, who restores Magneto's powers. Magneto procedes to attack the Avengers. The President of the United States wants all of Genosha destroyed, even though the Avengers are still on the island trying to stop Xorn. Director Hill of SHIELD refuses, secretly letting Iron Man hear this entire conversation.
The New Avengers make Hill bring in Daisy Johnson to help them take down Magneto, while the Sentry destroys Xorn.
As Magneto is being taken away on a helicopter, it explodes and he vanishes
New Avengers Annual #1
The new Black Widow, last seen getting incinerated in the first arc of New Avengers by Sauron, has now been given the powers of the Adaptoid by Hydra. The Sentry is able to subdue her, Hydra killing her before she can talk. Iron Man is very angry towards Spider-Woman due to her involvement with Hydra, setting the stage for New Avengers #23.
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones marry.
Fantastic Four 533-535
The government has enlisted the Hulk to diffuse a Gamma Bomb that Hydra has planted in Las Vegas. He is able to stop it from destroying the city, but in the process is irridiated with Gamma radiation which turns him into a savage Grey Hulk. The FF are able to stop him. In the process, Reed is given the idea of sending the Hulk offworld, based off a stray comment the Thing makes.
New Avengers: The Illuminati
After the Hulk's rampage in Las Vegas, the Illuminati vote to send him offworld in a ship. Namor refuses to go along with this and leaves. They arrange to have the Hulk go into space and stop the rogue Godseye Satellite that Tony helped design. They send a LMD Nick Fury to go talk to Banner, as that's the only person he would trust.
Tony goes on to discuss the upcoming Registration Act with the rest of the team, saying they should come out in support of it, giving an eerily accurate speech on what will happen in the upcoming future. Reed Richards agrees, but no one else does.
Fantastic Four 536-537
Thor's hammer crashes in Oklahoma. A squad of Doombots are trying to retrieve it, led by the real Dr. Doom, who was last seen in Hell. He reveals to the FF he escaped when Thor's hammer started tearing through the planes of reality, following it out of Hell. Doom is unable to lift the hammer, escaping afterwards.
A man with the initials DB is seen buying a ticket to Oklahoma
Amazing Fantasy (vol. 2) 15
We meet Amadeus Cho, a/k/a Mastermind Excello. He is considered the 7th smartest person on Earth due to a superhuman ability of his to read data from thin air. He is on the run from mysterious forces who killed his entire family, while at the same time dodging another organization who claims to want to help him.
He is somewhere in the desert, eating at a roadside cafe. The people trying to kill him track him there, launching a missile at him from a helicopter. Bruce Banner, also in the cafe (and I presume making his way up to Alaska), becomes the Hulk and stops the missile. He helps Cho escape, Cho gaining deep admiration for the Hulk as a result. Cho will surface again during Civil War.
The Incredible Hulk 88-91
Bruce Banner is now living in isolated Alaska, keeping himself far away from most civilization. The LMD Fury contacts him about the Godseye satellite, Banner agreeing to go destory it. He does, but as he's boarding the return ship it starts heading off into outer space. An explanation from the Illuminati starts playing on the screen as he starts screaming. (at the end, the LMD reports the success to Iron Man. Hell of an LMD too, he's even drinking booze....)
The Incredible Hulk 92-present
The Hulk's ship has a navigation error and crashes on a different planet than the Illuminati intended. Planet Hulk begins. Oh, this does not bode well for our heroes next year....
Iron Man 7-12: Execute Program
Iron Man takes down the Crimson Dynamo in a creative but brutal fashion. The rest of the New Avengers are not happy about this, Iron Man and Captain America having a staredown. Things only get worse when they're battling Gravitron aboard the Raft, Tony about to kill him when Steve tries to stop him. Tony endes up choking Steve to get him off.
Someone in Iron Man armor has been going around killing people related to the death of Tony's mentor, the evidence pointing to Tony himself.
Nick Fury (sigh....) is convinced Extremis has driven Tony mad, and Tony agrees to be incarcerated to prove his innocence. It turns out Tony is innocent, and the son of his mentor is behind it all. This leads Tony to realize how dangerous superheros can be, which leads right into Illuminati and Civil War #1
The MAJOR PROBLEM with this arc is Nick Fury's appearance, when it should have been Maria Hill. There is no way this was a LMD, but the actual thing. Severe continuity gaff....

Cyclops calls Captain America, who is in the process of getting stitched up as seen in Civil War #4. Steve gives him the info on where Domino is hiding the 198, as Fury helped her find a hiding place. The team finds out this is an old government facility in the Nevada Desert. He has him start attacking Bishop, intending to kill him because he harbors anger towards Bishop being in charge and not him.
Cyclops and Bishop battle, the 198 joining the battle. Valerie Cooper and Col. Reyes figure out General Lazer is using Johnny Dee to control Cyclops. They break up the mind control, Cyclops and Bishop calling a cease fire. They attempt to arrest him, but he escapes. Inside the facility is a mass of WMDs, which he activates to go off and hopefully kill all the mutants inside. He is captured after activating them.
Cooper interrogates him for the codes to shut down the WMDs, but Johnny Dee uses his powers to kill him before he can do so. Cyclops and Bishop pool their powers to open the door to try to free the 198, Iron Man and Ms. Marvel showing up to help. They succeed in doing so.
In the wake of these events, O*N*E's powers are severely restricted. The Sentinels will remain at the X-Mansion, but mutants are now free to come and go as they please. Cooper offers Bishop a job at O*N*E, his days with the X-Men seemingly over for the time being.

He learns they've also been salvaging technology during their clean up efforts for their own purposes. Because of this, he agrees to Tony Stark's orders for him to become the American liason to the new incarnation of Alpha Flight that is starting up in Canada, an offer he previously refused to do. This leads in to the upcoming Omega Flight #1.
Howard the Duck goes to a government office to register for the Superhero Act to keep himself out of trouble. There, he meets a SHIELD agent who has been assigned his casefile. The agent is furious at him for all the paperwork he makes him do, declaring that Howard the Duck officially no longer exists in the eyes of the goverment.
Eternals 1-5
Registration is a background topic of the series, with Iron Man appearing to tell Sersi she needs to reigster among other things.
Thunderbolts 106-108
The Grandmaster activates the Wellspring, a large source of energy that turns thousands of humans all over Earth into superhumans. This leads to near chaos all over the world, as all the Pro-Reg and Anti-Reg heroes are shown working side by side to quell the madness.

I found this stuff when looking for a good reading order for Civil War, I have not read comics in over 12 years and I saw the TPB at the book stores for Civil War, so I got very interested and the rest is history. I am about 1/3rd of the way through Civil war and hope to catch up to Planet Hulk / World War Hulk one day.
I am truly enjoying the New Avengers Books very much. I thought the whole House of M thing was OK, but the Decimation M Aftermath books were much better and very awesome. I went onto the Mutant Stories with Havok and Psyclops Lost brother that was hidden by Professor Xavior, then onto their brother going after the Shiar. COOL STORIES!
I am really enjoying Civil war though, it is definitely helping me catch up with the Marvel Universe. I plan on reading Planet Hulk next, then the Annihalation books 1-3 after that.

Note: 1:
I deleted the Spider-Man Unmasked Series (minus Sensational issue #28) because they really all came off as a bunch of distracting, forced, and corny Civil War story lines. Mysterio, Rhino, Chameleon, and Vulture's story arcs didn't really seem to have that much of a punch in comparison to the rest of the Civil War issues. Sure there was all the interesting side character stuff for Spider-Man, but I still feel these issues would not be missed if I left them out. So I put them in the Special Features Book within the section called: "Deleted Scenes", instead.
I also deleted Ghost Rider, and the Moon Knight issues because they were stories that did not directly deal with the meat of Civil War, as well. Yes, these books are connected to Civil War; But only in a very indirect way. Again, these issues are too muddy and distracting when you read them alongside Civil War in its entirety in my opinion.
Furthermore, I even eliminated She Hulk #9 because it was a really goofy issue that was kind of hard to take seriously, too.
To top it off: I even removed Eternals #1-3 because the story line involving Iron Man never paid off later in Civil War with the Eternals. Besides, the Civil War story arc was a back drop kind of a thing and nothing more.
On the other hand. I am not without compassion. So if you want to read everything in a chronological story arc reading order (with the deleted issues included) well I provided a list on their placement for you here:
She Hulk #9
(Should be placed after Frontline #2)
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #11
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #12
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #13
(Should all be placed together after Thunderbolts #103)

I moved Iron Man #13 and #14 near Civil War #5.
After I placed Iron Man #14 near Civil War #5: I also moved Sensational and the Friendly Spider-Man issues next to Iron Man #14.
I also added Eternals #1-3 right after Ms Marvel #10, too.

Final Civil War Reading Orders:
Okay. I looked through the Initiative Reading Order I just copied from some place else... and there are apparently some major errors as far chronological story arc placement is concerned. So I moved 45 issues and placed a couple of new issues that have slipped through the cracks, too.
I also decided to make the Initiative Reading Order not to stand on its own from Civil War (for obvious reasons).
However, if you are interested: I also created an Initiative Only Reading Order here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showpost.php?p=8327024&postcount=607) and here (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showpost.php?p=8327028&postcount=608).
Anyways, here is what should be my final update for my reading orders on the entire Civil War Saga looks like....

CIVIL WAR
(NEW TRADE PAPER BACK READING ORDER)
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc75/jasonmuzie/New%20Album/CivilWar01.jpg
This list is meant to help create a New Trade Paper Back Version of Civil War. An over-all story that helps put Civil War in better perspective. Which could be used to construct a new and more exciting hard cover series or 2nd printing.
(NOTE: All issues are are placed chronologically in story arc format. In other words: issues with no major time gaps in-between them were attempted (whenever possible) to be kept together (in an orderly time line) to preserve a more fluid, uninterrupted, and natural reading flow. (Also: Flashback issues can be placed either in a linear fashion or as they were originally intended (As Flashbacks). Which ever serves the story or story arcs the best)).

Oh, and I also removed Black Panther #26-a (Pages 1-14) in my Tradepaper Back List, too. The events in the beginning of Black Panther spoil the story arc in Fantastic Four 543.
On the other hand. I am not without compassion. So if you want to read everything in a chronological story arc reading order (with the deleted issues included) well I provided an alternative placement for you in a separate reading order list below (Titled "Civil War Reading Order: (Complete)")...

In my opinion, if you're set on reading it, the only parts you need to worry about are Civil War #1-7, The Confession, and Captain America #25.

That already looks like a good order, more or less.
I might recommend skipping FRONT LINE, the INITIATIVE one-shot and all of the "Fallen Son" books except for FALLEN SON: IRON MAN, but . . . if you already have them, you might as well give them a read.

Civil War Reading Order Update:
Apparently, I missed including New Avengers #21 in my reading order for some odd reason. It was on my master list but it wasn't posted here. Well, just to inform you I placed New Avengers #21 after Frontline #2 in both versions of my Reading Orders above.
The reason for this placement is that we see Captain America and Falcon try to recruit Henry Pym. Captain America asks Pym if he signed the Registration Act. Pym tells them that he is already on Tony's side. So this event has to happen sometime after Civil War #2 because the Registration Act has not been made law yet. In other words, the Registration Act has not been made law yet for anyone to sign yet.
Also, just to let you know... New Avengers #22 happens before issues Civil War #2 and New Avengers #21. The reason for this is that Iron Man comes to Luke Cage and warns him that the Registration Act will go into effect at midnight and he wants to know where he stands.

There's a checklist at the back of civil war #1 however I'd like to get a concise reading order.
I've seen varying lists on various sites but they all differ.
Is there a civil war reading order list anywhere that you guys would consider completely accurate?
thanks in advance!

Just place them in this order and it reads fine.

I'm sure it does because that looks very close to the published order. However, it's not the same thing as a strictly chronological reading order like those that are presented in this thread.
