I'm choosing the latter three based on a plot I'd like to see in the X-men. All of them are from the future trying to stop their own timelines from happening. I would finally have the x-men move past being the "misunderstoond-hated-poor-minority" and have them deal with over zealous Mutant Rights Supporters that try to make up for the years of mistreatment by constantly trying to sue the government and other companys. I think this would be an interesting new take on the Mutants Rights thing. We have pretty much seen the whole "hated and feared" thing to death, it would be fresh to see how the X-nen would react if the opposite point of view takes it to the same extreme. We've seen the Friends of Humanity, why don't we see some Humans start the Friends of Mutants:D And the X-men would have to step in to stop them from going over board.

*Apocalypse has some subtle involvement behind the scenes, and falls on the anti-registration side, for his own reasons. He offers Scott some technological support, which Scott reluctantly accepts.

With Storm married to the Black Panther and Jean dead, I still tried to form two iconic teams with the remaining X-men.

First, I'd switch the Astonishing cast to Uncanny after Whedon is done, and just end Astonishing:

Monet would join as the muscle and as a reluctant and uncooperative "protege" to Emma Frost (who she resembles in attitude and hates her all the more for it). Beast would be tech-guy and Polaris would be a powerhouse and a voice of reason (for once giving her sanity and diginity). Lorna and Hank would keep Jean from ripping Emma a new one. Wolverine would be in and out (depending on his mood). Cyclops, having cheated on Emma with...say...Colleen Wing, was kicked unceremoniously out of the mansion and told to come back when he had his crap back together. Alex would be leading some other team (not together with Lorna - letting both characters grow).

Somethig like that. High drama, high powers. Mixing it up a bit.

Your lineup is not bad, but what I really like is what you said: it'd be great to have a team that gets along and in-fighting kept at a minimum. Even with snarky characters like Emma, Betsy, Sunfire, and Northstar, I think I would like to see the family aspect brought to the forefront while the 'tude is directed towards the X-Men's antagonists.

They can do that, too. I was just going by what was one of the few good things about the last ongoing Gambit series - it was hinted that Gambit actually had friendships with the other residents, and that they had fun together. In one panel of an issue, Nightcrawler says he's been practicing his ping pong and is ready for a rematch with Remy as he BAMFS to the other side of the table to return his own volley.

I'm so tired of everything being doom and gloom and angst and sad and ugly and serious in the X-Books. I'm ready for some of those friendship moments, where they actually seem like a family again. I'm ready for another softball game. I don't want to be constantly depressed when I read X-Men.

If we're going to have 2 "squads" I'd prefer a setup more along the lines of what Morrison/Casey did, ie: a school centered teaching staff and a combat/field team. Just seems to make more sense imo, I've never liked the arbitrary divisions that seemed to start with the Gold/Blue split.

Thanks. I shared my rationale for both teams in the "what do you miss the most" thread, but I'll share it again here:

- For the most part, Astonishing has the formula right. I'd consider them the Blue Team at this point.

- But for the second team, the Gold Team, I think you mix in some younger characters to keep it fresh. Kind of like what Carey and Brubaker are doing with guys like Cannonball and Warpath. Throw them in with veterans like Nightcrawler, Rogue and Iceman (who are veterans, but not old veterans like Wolverine, Beast and Cyclops). To that mix I'd add either Psylocke or Mystique as the team's femme fatale. Probably Mystique because I think the relationship between her and Rogue and Nightcrawler is interesting, and her and Bobby's burgeoning romance will create some nice tension.

So, like I said above, I think this team gives any writer a ton to work with. You've got a somewhat wild and reckless leader (much like Storm was back in her mohawk days) in Rogue. A very stalwart lieutenant-type in Cannnonball, who has seen a lot of action and is just a really steady character overall ("the best of everything his teachers had to offer" is how Cable referred to him once). An original X-man with a sharp wit and a cool power visually in Iceman. Another favorite in both looks and personality in Nightcrawler. A bad@$$ Wolverine-type in Warpath. And a femme fatale with strong connections to both Rogue and Nightcrawler in Mystique (as well as a new romantic connection to Bobby). Personally, I think it works.

Now, why didn't I go with some of the other X-characters?

Havok and Polaris - With the demise of Scott and Jean as the X-men's steady couple (which obviously could never work because they were just too popular to ride off into the sunset together IMO), I'd have Alex and Lorna finally get hitched. No Alex jilting Lorna at the altar nonsense this time. They get married and decide to try to live a normal life, thereby providing a living symbol of Xavier's dream of peaceful integration into society. Polaris even dyes her hair so that she can fit in, and they do end up riding off into the sunset together because they are not as popular as Scott and Jean and thus can do that without being missed too badly (at least IMO).

Psylocke - I'd like to see her in Excalibur with her brother. No other reason.

Archangel - Another who is living Xavier's dream. He's a reserve X-man, so we may see him pop up from time to time, but for the most part he's just a successful businessman who happens to be a mutant.

Xavier - I like the idea of him staying in the Shi'ar Empire for awhile (if there even is an empire once Brubaker gets done with his run). Scott and Emma have kicked him out of his own home, and I honestly think it's more interesting that way...at least for now.

Cable, Bishop or Marvel Girl - I've made no secret of my dislike of time-traveling or dimensionally-displaced characters. IMO they take away from the main theme of the X-men, which is all about being persecuted for being different, because they honestly distract us from that. They are convoluted and confusing, and IMO they take away from that psuedo-realistic feeling that one gets from the X-men movies where you think to yourself, "could this really happen in our world?" That type of stuff belongs in books like the Fantastic Four and (to a lesser degree) the Avengers. I kind of feel the same way about a lot of the extraterrestrial stuff too.

Sabretooth -Too evil and sadistic to ever be an X-man. Period.

Gambit - I'm liking the fact that Rogue is getting a chance to breathe without him for a change. He'd still show up if I were in charge, but only as a guest-star. Perhaps looking for that sample of the Cure that Beast has in his lab, because he wants to undo what Apocalypse has done to him. I honestly think that Gambit is one of the few X-men characters who would still be interesting without any powers.

Magma - I thought about adding her to the team (to give us a little fire and ice action), but then decided that she just didn't need to be there. I'd keep her around the mansion somewhere as a teaching assistant or something, and have her guest-star in New X-men with Wolfsbane and Karma and whoever else isn't an active X-man these days.

Darwin - A cool and interesting character IMO, but too much of a rookie. I'd add him to the New X-men cast. Lord knows they could use him! Those poor kids are dropping like flies. At least we know this one stands virtually no chance of getting killed.

It's an old Iceman costume I was rather fond of, tweaked with a little more blue.

He does admittedly look like Gambit.

Well, replace Emma with Storm and add Jean and you've got the current cast of Ultimate X-men, just with different costumes.

Yeah, looks like your vision of what the "ultimate" team of X-men ought to be is pretty close to Marvel's own. But I definitely agree with your inclusion of Emma. She's pretty much my favorite X-Woman these days, so I hope Whedon doesn't end up making her a villain again.
