View Full Version : Civil War reminds me of Secret Wars

When I was a kid nothing was bigger then the Secret Wars. It had everything and everybody. It delivered thrills, chills and one incredible black suit surprise. Civil War reminds me of the feelings I had about comics back then. I am excited to read each issue and cannot wait to see what happens next. I can feel the big battle coming and you know its only a matter of time before the big bads strike. Many of the characters are taking on new life. Tony Stark is slimey again and Reed Richards is reaching a new level of jerk. Ben Grimm is showing signs of humanity that are fantastic for this drama and where will Wolverine wind up in all of this. You add the shock of Spiderman revealing himself (I am not as crazy about where they are taking that character, but am willing to give it time) and we have one heck of a drama.
The House of M left me high and dry and Crisis was incredibly bland. Right now this is not only the best thing going, but it has a bit of magic that really makes me feel like a kid again.

In a strict story-wise sense, Civil War has so many parallels to Acts of Vengeance that it's scary... I was thinking about it recently:
The backdrop of superhuman registration is a major part of both crossovers (although obviously more for CW). In fact, some of the dialogue and talking points from normal people in AoV echo stuff from CW pretty much word for word.
Dr. Doom has his life seriously messed up and uses events in the crossover to try and regain his power (take out the imposter Kristoff in AoV, and return from hell and try to get Thor's hammer in CW).
Thor undergoes an identity crisis (Eric Masterson, his current mysterious status).
All sorts of strange alliances are being formed (all of the villains banding together in AoV, things like Iron Man and the Thunderbolts now).
And of course... the two most eerie coincidences...
The New Warriors were started in Thor #411... in an issue of Acts of Vengeance (awww how cute and innocent they all were back then! Except for Night Thrasher... he had a Bruce Wayne times 5 complex even back then), and 17 years later in Civil War they're basically finished.
And... Nitro. In AoV Vulture wants to use Nitro to further himself in the villain hierarchy, so he decides to break Nitro out of prison and explode him in his courtroom, thereby killing hundreds and making the Vulture a major player. I find it funny that Rusty and Skids were the ones that prevented this :D
I'm sure there are others... not a bad thing, mind you. And I definitely agree with what you said about Secret Wars and Civil War. Issues of CW cant come out soon enough...

Wow, those are really great parallels foxfire. Thanks for sharing. I agree with both of you. I haven't really been this into a story in a long time. The last time was during Morrison's run on X-men. I really love what has been going on so far. Ha ha, and it has never been more fun to talk about a comic. I can't wait to see what they have in store in CW 3.
