I've been thinking of getting a mod chip for the PS2. (They're legal in Australia)
What should I know? I've heard that there are some that will enable colour graphics. Are there some games that just don't work?
My main goal would be being able to play Japanese computer games directly, and maybe some American ones.
You should look for software solutions first. Modchips tend to be heavy and the circuits in the PS2 are really, really close. Unless you're a whiz at soldering, I suggest you go software.
A really good one is swap magic (http://www.pinkgodzillagames.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=41_56&products_id=176&osCsid=8b74a953d597af37444413ef07fc3a32)
The only thing I don't like about it is that it requires a flip-top mod for your ps2 -- although that's not very difficult to install.

Yeah, a friend of mine has one of those, and he loves it to death. Although, since it's different from an actual mod chip, I'm not sure about the legality of it in Australia.

I ended up getting a mod chip anyway -- so far, no problems. I've done Final Fantasy XII, Shadow Hearts New World and Gundam Climax UC on it. All NTSC-J -- haven't got any American games yet. Spoiled for choice really.

Are mod chips illegal in the States because people use them to play pirated games or something?

Unfortunately, now it looks as if the Australian government may make them illegal to own -- because of the Free Trade Deal with America. I'm going to have to just wait and see what happens now -- blah.
