Any reason why they never did end up having Gambit be Harpoon? Was it because people liked Gambit and didn't want him being a bad guy?

Uh... are you thinking of Ahab?
I don't think Gambit was ever supposed to be Ahab. It was hinted that Cable might be Ahab, and eventually it was instead revealed that it was Rory Campbell. But I don't know that Gambit was ever a serious candidate.

Yeah, Gambit was never supposed to be Harpoon.
And Inuit is the term for the group of people who are commonly referred to as Eskimos.
