View Full Version : You Folks Can Help Me With A Bit About Unintentional Humor in Comics!

I was going to do a bit on the ten funniest unintentional comedy bits in comics from the past 10 years from Marvel and DC (if we expand it to the indies, then the list would be filled with really bad self-published indies, and that's no fun!), but then I thought the odds were that I would end up leaving off some good ones. So rather than post my picks and say, "Oh man, I forgot about ____, ____ and ___!" I figure I can ask you folks to name YOUR picks, and that could help me decide on mine!
So help me out!
Name the ten funniest unintentional comedy bits from Marvel and DC from the past ten years!

That's Frank Miller - As Steven Grant pointed out, everything he writes is a comedy. I doubt the funniness was unintentional.

If I had a reliable scanner, I'd pitch in, but I can always point out. One of the worst, possibly unintentionally hilarious/ridiculous moments in Marvel in the past ten years would have to be Millar's Ultimate Hulk running amok in New York City, screaming for Freddy Prinze Jr.

I'm pretty sure that "Hulk Horny!" is quite intentionally meant to be funny.

Yes, that's pretty much a given. I wasn't even aware that some people thought it was meant to be read totally straight.

Does the mauling of Ma Gnucci in the Punisher mini-series count?
Then again, most of Ennis' deaths portrayed in Preacher and Punisher are that way.

So far all I've seen in this thread are bits people didn't realise were intentionally funny.

Jean Loring's "I happened to bring a flame thrower with me just in case..." confession from IDENTITY CRISIS was pretty hilarious.

Yes it was. I had no real problem with her being the killer, but the flame thrower part was to far out there.

Spider-Man sticking MJ and Aunt May in old Iron Man armor and storming Castle Doom would have to be up there.
What about that bit where Jesus jumps off the cross and starts kicking the Greek pantheon's ass?

Yeah, that was special. Why couldn't Zeus bitch-slap Jesus soundly, and shout in true Marvelesque pseudo-Shakespearean manner, "Get back on thy cross!"

I made it the past 10 years specifically to rule out the early 90s Extreme Studios stuff, like the Jesus off the cross bit. :D

Marville - the entire series. I know it was meant to be a comedy, but that's not why it was funny. It was funny, because it was so un-funny, and Iron Man said 'nigger'.
Also funny, was the final issue 'a guide to writing comics' where Jemas told potential writers how to write a book - after writing a book that had bombed big time.
(Also worth a mention is his direction to start with no action and build up... like in Star Wars, a film which of course, starts with a fight between two space ships).
The Authority - Any moment where they claim, which they do repeteadley, that 'no one's done anything like this before' or "we've changed everything forever", and then go on to fight a supervillian team, a supervilliain, and another supervillian team.
That Heroes Reborn pic of Capt. America from Liefield, which is posted by someone everytime someone else defends his work or asks why he is disliked.
The revelation of Onslaught to be Charles Xavier. How do they do it?
By revealing a panel to Jean Grey from the x-men's first apperance where Chalres has a crush on Jean... somthing ignored for 30-40 years of comics, even by the guy who wrote it.
The Extreme Universe being in a paralysed 14 year olds head.
Was it meant to be touching or funny?

-BrianBut you're missing out on some of the early Stan Lee wonkiness as a result.
Like the first appearance of Iron Man, where the bad guy temporarily slows IM down by tipping a file cabinet on top of him that just happens to be full of rocks.

It looks to be a rendition of what that specific image of Captain America would look like if viewd from above.

Oh man, that Captain America thing is hilarious! And the bird's eye view is disturbing.
Hm, all I can think of is in a recent Nightwing when he hits a guy and goes "Y-you're metahuman?!" Horrible, but funny.
