As shown in the newsest Fantastic Four issue:

Thor is back. You really don't get to see him, just some shadow in the lightning, but he really is back.

Well, to me, this is awesome news. I've been waiting for him to come back for a long time.

Oh Lord, please don't let JMS tell the story of how he came back. He can only screw it up

The latest issue, #538, with a blue "Civil War" banner. But it's really more of a "walk on, fly off hidden in a bright flash without saying much" role. Nothing's explained.

While the reveal may have happened on FF, I think Thor will be popping up during CW. He'll probably be all confused as to why everyone is fighting. I hope he'll be the bridge that gets all the heroes back on the same page.

Great to hear Thor will be back, however, I am restraining my exitement until we see HOW Thor will be brought back, after all. There's potential there to really, really blow it.

Hopefully, this means that Thor's world, the incredible Asgard, will be back as well somehow, along with cast like the Warriors Three and the Enchantress.

It's funny...Thor tends to be the character that unites people, isn't he? After all, was it not Thor that brought the Avengers together after the attacks by Asgardian monsters?

I have great faith if Millar is the one doing it. But yeah, Thor is one great unifying force. To me, the hammer is just as powerful as Cap's shield.

I give Thor's reappearance and whopping... Meh.

I neither care nor don't care.

It's like an afterthought tacked onto the end of the issue, most of which is about the Thing pondering whether he's on the right side or not.

We saw a blonde haired man with items that had the initials D.B. on them.

D.B. for those not in the know could stand for Don Blake. Thor's first mortal guise.

Hmm, if it is Thor, I wonder why he spent all that time disguised as a human? Hopefully, things will be explained. haha, kinda funny how so much mystery is wrapped aroung Thor in both Marvel and Ultimates universe.

Refresh my memory........was Don Blake an actual person seperate from Thor, or an alter ego-ish being?

If he was a seperate person, maybe Thor left some sort of power with him that would reignite and recreate Thor when bonded with the hammer?

Okay, I've got a definite opinion on Thor, and I'd like to get some feedback.

First, I realize most of you out there weren't born until I graduated from high school, so you don't know the Thor I know. I started reading Thor shortly after John Buscema first took over the book, when Stan Lee was still writing the character, and when Jack Kirby reprints were still appearing in the annuals. Back when Thor's tunic was black.

If Thor is going to return, I want to see Thor drawn properly. In my opinion, Walt Simonson did not draw Thor properly. He did not get the nose right. Neither did George Perez draw the character correctly. Again, the nose. I know, it may seem like a small thing, but when you draw a character, the small things count. Like the spit curl in Superman's hair, or the cleft in Captain America's chin: It's those distinctive facial characteristics that make a character recognizable.

I also hope that the folks who write the character know how to write the dialogue. I was teaching high school when the "Heroes Reborn" series came out. The owner of my local comic shop and I used to get a big kick out of how badly it was done. Wow, Jeph Loeb could not write Thor's dialogue. The way Thor used the personal possessive pronoun-- "This is MINE hammer!"-- would have cracked me up if I wouldn't have been crying so hard when I was reading it. Ugh.

Want to read GOOD Thor comics to see what I mean? Pick up Essential Thor, Volume TWO. That's the stuff. Read the original issues from about #180 to #200. Wow. Especially the one from the month when all Marvel Comics jumped from $.15 to $.25 giants. John Buscema inked by Sal Buscema, guest starring the Silver Surfer (or, come to think of it, the issue of the original Silver Surfer comic that guest-starred Thor).

Finally, like the earlier poster in this thread said, I also hope JMS does not write the character. The way he writes AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is a travesty. It is a total misunderstanding of the Gwen Stacy character to portray her as having had sex with Norman Osborn behind Peter's back. It doesn't make the character "more real," it simply demonstrates that neither JMS nor Joe Quesada have a firm grasp on the characters they are in charge of.

Hmmm... come to think of it, I don't have much hope for seeing the "real" Thor return, do I?

I agree. JMS screws up Spider-Man by ripping off Alan Moore's Swamp Thing "Anatomy Lesson" & grafting it on Peter Parker with "The Other."

JMS can only screw up Thor.

I KNOW the "real" Thor and your analysis is spot on!

I believe we don't have much of a chance of seeing the "real" Thor we grew up on. What we'll likely get is some bleached out version with a great deal of angst. We'll get a "dark" Thor without any hint of his godhood, original speech patterns, royalty, etc.. :(

The Silver Surfer issue you are seeking is #4, volume 1. It was reprinted in all it's glory in Amazing Adventures #4, which looked almost exactly like the original cover.

I second the motion to go by the Second Volume of Essential Thor (#113-130) It is classic Jack Kirby/Stan Lee Thor....

I was just entering High School when Jack Kirby left Marvel in 1970... and left Thor in spirit about a ten months before. (In Fantastic Four, he left at least a year before his departure...) So, although I continued to hang on to Marvel Comics for nearly two years after his departure... I could tell they just didn't feel the same...

Thor was gone.
And though the glimer of excitment returned with #337 BIG TIME, it was a different flavor.

I miss Thor.

Really?! Wow, I didn't think he would be coming back til the end. Well, there goes my hope that "you know who" would be the one that rebuilds the bridges burned by Steve and Tony.

I knew about Hawkeye and Punisher. I just didn't think that everything would happen during CW 3. Man, looks like a lot of plot points are going to develop from that issue then.

And the initials D.B. will probably stand for Douche Bag. Right now, I don't think Marvel even has the talent to bring back Thor properly. It would be better to leave him out of the picture for now, until somebody who actually likes the character has enough cool ideas to justify his return.

I don't know if you read Ultimates, but I love the way Thor is written there. So, if he is brought back in the actual CW mini, I think Millar will do a fine job. We probably won't know the justification for his return though until post CW.

Not for long....

The Matt Fraction-written mini starts up this month, I think, so you can safely assume he's out by then. Besides, the final page of DD #86 would lead one to make certain conclusions...
