Morna and I have had the pleasure of hanging out with Tad and his wife and daughter for the last couple of days. It's been a great visit so far. Besides great meals and nice walks we've also enjoyed talking about art and comics and the mysterious differences between Americans and Canadians. We had a walk during low tide today and went out for dinner together. After that we drove to a lagoon and saw many herons and gooses. On the way back home we went and looked at the university campus overlooking the lagoon where there is a "castle" that was used as Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Children in the X-Movies.

The wonderful Tad is visiting us in Victoria. Morna and I can't make it to SDCC.

Here's Morna showing Tad a Gumboot Chiton.

... or is that Crimony Crabhead!

We saw a few of the usual suspects but nothing earth-shattering : sea cucumbers, brittle stars, the extremely cute Northern Clingfish with his suction cup on the underside for sticking onto rocks, porcelain crabs, purple urchins, green urchins, anenomes, various chitons and a more unusual sight, a good sized hermit crab with no shell. I didn't think they could survive out in a harsh predator filled world with their soft easy-to-eat rear end hanging out but he looked like he was managing just fine thank-you!

Morna: if you ever release an album or a book, it must be titled Soft, Easy-To-Eat Rear. :)

OMG, that was my favorite album back in the '80s! They sounded kinda like a cross between Jethro Tull and Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

"Homeless Hermit Crab" was a great song.
Yeah, but in retrospect, it was probably a bad choice for our 1986 prom theme. I hear they never did get the saltwater stains out of the basketball court floor. And my sea-urchin wrist corsage wasn't too appealing or fragrant by the end of the evening...but I could say the same about my date.

Yesterday was a great day. Tad came by when we closed and Morna showed him how to make a paperweight. Tad did very well and kept his little blob on center better than most beginners. After that we all went out for dinner and sampled some fine Poutine. The evening concluded with some Canada Day fireworks. I have many pictures of Tad creating a paperweight so without further ado…

Gary, I trust that in a week when Tad's paperweight is cool you'll post more pictures?

Actually, we already wrapped it up for Tad to take with him on his trip home today. I guess he'll have to post and image of the finished piece. It looked kind of like this...

He came in in this amazing red number with tigers and dragons but it wasn't cotton so we sent him home to change... so it's our fault. sigh

better than having him burst into flames *shrug*

Gary's just teasing you guys. That's one of his masterworks.

It was great fun trying out a little glasswork. It's amazing how hot the glass is as you're trying to shape it. I expected the furnace to be hot but the larger the blob of glass on your rod, the more heat it gives off.

Morna did a great job talking me through it even though she kept handing me tools I'd never seen saying, "Here. Now it's time to use this!" :p

It was amazing and the piece came out better than I expected.

Okay, here's the real thing. As much as I've enjoyed the various glass pieces that morna and Gary have posted, when you witness the process you get a whole new appreciation.

My piece was a simple paperweight and morna was kind enough to add some finishing touches that made it more professional looking than it would've been if left to me. As I was making it, the central colors were an glowing orange, like a captured flame. Seeing it's final color was a surprise. The blue is so dark that the details can't really be seen unless strongly backlit which is what I tried to do with these photos.

Thanks again, guys.
