View Full Version : First Diptych/Triptych Cover?

Diptych and Triptych covers are those covers that merge together to form one large image (di = two, tri= three).
What I have wondered for quite some time was "When was the first diptych/triptych comic book cover?"
Anyone have any guesses?
The earliest I've seen is New Teen Titans/Outsiders, and that seems WAY too recent.

Doesn't the whole "Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe" flow together as one long strip (at least the 2nd volume, perhaps), when you line up the front and back covers. Am I misremembering this?
I also recall hearing about a comic where 4 covers fit together in a grid. Can't recall the title - was it a Marvel book. Was it a Steranko thing? I have a real fuzzy memory on this one.
Brian - I don't think you'd find any from the 40s, 50s and 60s like this as continuity was not an issue and a cover was designed to sell that particular book.
I flipped through the Gerber books dozens of times in my life and don't recall seeing this sort of cover.

Yeah, I figure the 70s would be the first time you'd see it realistically, but I can't think of ANY that fit!!
And good call with the Official Handbooks, Scott!
Let's see which one was released first (I think Titans/Outsiders came out first)!

Nope, as of right now, the Official Handbook wins!
It came out in late 1982, while the Titans/Outsiders didn't come out until late 1983!
So can anyone beat late 1982?

You know what's really cool about those kinds of covers, is seeing them all together.
Eh? Eh?

Now I'm thinking it wasn't covers, but was consecutive double-page splashes so that you'd really have to buy two copies of the issue to get the full effect.
Was this a Nick Fury/Steranko thing?
In terms of the Marvel Handbook, was that ever sold as a poster.
If not, why not?
It would have looked pretty cool.

Force Works #1 had the first, and only, fold out/pop up cover.
Works amazingly well considering how complicated the folds in it were.
Shame the issue itself wasn't as innovative (pop will eat itself type book that it was).

The old HANDBOOKS use to do that.

This probably isn't what you're thinking of, but the first revival of DC's Outsiders (Barr & Pelletier) had two covers (by Travis Charest, I think) that could be mated on any edge: top/bottom, left/right, with either comic in either position, for four possible arrangements.
Of course, the physical comics as printed and cut weren't precise enough to match the pieces up exactly...they never are, are they?
