View Full Version : Kevin Richardson "wants it that way" as he splits from the Backstreet Boys
Kevin Richardson splits from the Backstreet Boys "to persue other interests." (http://www.comcast.net/entertainment/index.jsp?cat=ENTERTAINMENT&fn=/2006/06/24/420733.html)
I'm shocked! Absolute shocked! Kevin Richardson leaves his fellow boybots behind as he "persues other interests." By now, their 12 year old fans must have discovered rock music. I wonder is that his "other interests?"
First the Spice Girls, then 98 Degrees, now the Backstreet Boys. Who's next??? :evilsmile

The group took a hiatus in 2001 after A.J. McLean's highly publicized entry into rehab forced the band to postpone their "Black & Blue" tour. They reunited to release the album "Never Gone" in 2005.
[...]
The group plans to return to the studio this weekend to begin work on their next album, which is due later this year.
Wait...? The Backstreet Boys are still active?

This may shock people ...but I actually liked the Backstreet Boys. They really made me a fan with some of thier tunes. Yeah it was poppy stuff for 12 yearolds but they created that sensation and others followed them. Plus lets be honest...as a band they were still getting played on MTV when most would laught at these guys in thier late 20's & 30's.
Its just that by the end of " Never Gone " you can tell the end was near. Richardson's 33 years old. He's doing Theatre now. He has money and a family now.
I can see why he's stepping away. If I was the others I'd leave too. His loss is a big one for the reason he was a good vocalist next to Carter.

I am a man of many...many musical flavors. :D
Kevin always had the "big sexy eyebrows"
I still want to lick em. . .
Could having our very own Bert lick his eyebrows be one of the "other interests" Mr Richardson is referring to? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Hey, people said the same thing when Diana Ross left the Superemes, but she showed them. You never know. Robbie Williams, although inexplicably not as successful here in the states, far outshone... what were they called? Wet, wet, wet? I think?

Actually, while we're talking about horrific news, Take That are recording a new album as we speak.

Kevin Richardson will either try out off-off-off Broadway, Broadway, pursue a solo singing career, &/or try to be a successful actor. He will more than likely try a solo singing career.
Wait...? The Backstreet Boys are still active?
I'm surprised too. MTV doesn't support them anymore. And the only real hardcore fans left are Moms/Grandmothers while their formerly 12-20 year old daughters have moved on to other things now they are 19-27 years old...

Diana Ross was long supported by Barry Gordy of Motown; that's why her music & acting careers flourished. If Barry Gordy did not support Ross, she would have vanished into obscurity.
I don't think Kevin Richardson can count of Barry Gordy to keep his career alive. Unless Richardson sleeps with a record owner & has a long affair with him...

First, let's get the necessary business out of the way: boy bands suck.
All right, now that that ritualistic formality has been taken care of, allow me to get into the subject in somewhat greater depth. Allowing that pop for pop's sake has legitimacy (and if you can't allow that, please leave this post now), there was at least one song in the Backstreet Boys' catalogue that I'd consider "good pop"...naturally their signature 1999 hit "I Want It That Way." It has all the elements of a classic pop song: memorable melody, easily accessible lyrics, and professional production values.
The thing is, when a song is *manufactured* like that, to whom do you give credit? Do you give credit to the Backstreet Boys for lending their voices to the vocal and their name and image to promoting it? Do you credit the anonymous session musicians who played the instruments on the song? Do you credit the production team that put it all together? Or do you credit the professional songwriter who was commissioned to compose the song?
That's the main reason that boy bands are disdained. It's not so much the music itself being poor as the overall product having very little integrity.

Boybots themselves usually did little to create any of their songs. The songs' credits usually go the music producer & the song writers.

I will say this...I always enjoyed " Drowning " from thier Hits collection. Yes its just vocals but it takes something to make it and stay as long. Because as we've seen with 98 degrees and other boy bands have faded away.
Plus I really liked " Never More " for the fact we saw some good musical pieces involved.

Well, I hope you don't admit you're a former Backstreet Boys fan at any rock concert. You might get yourself hurt.

They had a pretty successful club tour to promote their latest album. Yeah, maybe not staduims, but people were still showin' up to see them. New Edition hasn't made money off of album sales for YEARS. They just tour non-stop and sell out shows all the time.

A club tour is not the same as a stadium tour. The Backstreet Boys are on the way out. Boybots have lost their shine. I want it that way.

Depending upon how many people are taking how big of a cut, a Club Tour can be more profitable. It's also a more intimate setting, which allows a better rapport with the audience.

Doesn't it make it that much more noticable that you're also lip-synching as well, or is that beside the point by now?

Everyone gets credit in a miasma of performers and pre/post production. The way I see it, singers are artists or instruments; if they don't play their own tune, they're getting played.

If any of them are going ot show up on Surreal Life it'll be AJ or Nick or possibly Howie.

AJ's too easy (alcoholism)
Nick can't risk being punked by younger brother Aaron more than he already has been
So I'm gonna say Howie. He'll be the "quiet one" who's continually awe-struck by the erratic behavior of the other housemates.

Wait a minute... Am I the only one here who isn't on a first-name basis with the Backstreet Boys? "AJ"? "Nick"? "Howie"? What happened to "the annoying one", "the one with a moustache", and "the really annoying one"?

The boybots/girlbots do not get any royalty oney from the songs. When a song such as "I Want It That Way" becomes big, the royalties are likewise enormous. The Backstreet Boys just get the singing credit, but no royalties. Royalties & song publishing is where the real money is made.

Always thought he was going to first one to out himself. His fling with Paris HIlton couldn't have been anymore fake.
It only got worse when Paris had mysterious bruises after a few weeks "dating" him.
OTOH, maybe they just had really kinky sex that night.
DDM:
The legal shit is what I hate the most about boybands. They all are to stupid to realise they are getting screwed in their contracts but sign on *anyway*.
That Lou Perlman (?) show on MTV about that boyband was very enlightening.
Boy bands are constantly spat upon and yelled at by their superiors (i.e. everyone else), have no groupies, endless training, the touring, the legal loopholes that leave them with almost nothing* etc.
In said show when Ashley (?), he's a blonde guy who used to have his own show on MTV (Angel or something), didn't immediately sign on because his lawyer told him it was a bad contract the company manipulated his band mates into guilt tripping him into signing on. When he was away (he didn't come back until he got a better contract) the bandmates were constantly drilled into thinking he didn't care about them or the band. Bad shit.
* Nsync are the only boyband I've heard where they found a way to not only break away from their "creator" but also get most of profits themselves as well
