Hello all. I am a (relative) newcomer to the Avengers. To make it clear, I started collecting at 'The Kang Dynasty', and have everything since. However, I want to pick up a TPB or two, and I have been thinking.

What is the best Avengers TPB to get? I was tempted by 'Avengers Under Siege' but I am HUGELY not a fan of the art of that era. (It sadly undermined the Kree-Skrull War for me) I have seen a few different TPBs but I was wondering what advice I could get?

Also, in terms of solo Avengers titles, what is the best? I love THor and would love it if anyone could tell me the best Thor book? I have also been very tempted by Captain America: Winter Soldier...

Any help would be appreciated.

Avengers Under Seige
Avengers Forever
Ultron Unlimited

Those are pretty much the best stories the Avengers have to offer.

Like I said, I'm not a huge fan of the art of A: US's era but I will consider it. Ultron Unlimited and Avengers Forever definitely tempt me..... I've never read an Ultron story and I love Kang as a character....

Since you liked the Kang Dynasty get the first Avengers Assemble! hardcovers (Volume 1 and 2) since they showcase Busiek and Perez's best work on the title and it's right before the Kang Dynasty trade. I'm still waiting for the Avengers Assemble! Vol. 3 hardcover myself instead of the softcover.

Other good books are the Avengers Legends: George Perez Visionaries trade which has like 4 or 5 more or less self contained stories, Avengers Forever is a must, Kree Skrull War, and JLA/Avengers. I just recently bought Celestial Madonna so I'll tell you how that one goes (I heard lots of good praise about it) and I hear Serpent Crown is quite good even though the conflict between the Avengers, Kang and the other villains (like Orca) take place in really varied spots on earth.

I plan on getting the Avengers Vision Quest TPB too just to sample more of the West Coast stuff. In fact I think my first ever owned Avengers comic when I was really small was a spanish version of the issue where Vision was showed dismantled in front of Wanda which creeped me out back then.

BTW I'm assuming you're just into the "classic" era stuff so I'll leave it at that.

Get the entire Captain America series written by Brubaker. Its best for you to read them in order from ish one thru the current storyline Twenty first century Blitz

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out all those comics. BTW Will. S, I have the Kree/Skrull War and JLA/Avengers. Which were great except for Superman beating Thor ;)

Heh yeah that was a sucky move, alot of the Marvel characters got taken out more easily by Wonder Woman and Superman which shouldn't happen quite that way but it was a great book and Thor says later on that a rematch would go quite different :)

Avengers Forever seemed boring to me.

If you like Kang, there's an Avengers: Kang - Time and Time Again that re-prints some of the older Kang stuff.

Lessee if'n I can find some more info....

Here we go:

Kang: Time and Time Again (Avengers 69-71, 267-269, Thor 140, Hulk 135; w Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Roger Stern; a Jack Kirby, Sal Buscema, Herb Trimpe, John Buscema). [From Marvel Comics: The super-villainy of Kang the Conqueror…unleashed at last! You've seen his true colors in YOUNG AVENGERS; now, see what came before! In a classic contest, the Grandmaster and Kang pit the Avengers against the Squadron Sinister and the wartime Invaders! And when the self-proclaimed "Ultimate Kang" sets outs to conquer his alternate-reality counterparts, only one force can possibly halt his mad march: himself!? Plus: Kang takes on Thor and the Hulk!]

Avengers Forever is excellent, but it has a lot of continuity that probably will go over the head of a new Avengers fan. Ultron Unlimited is great, too.

Well I want to thank you all for those suggestions.

I had decided I would probably pick up Ultron Unlimited when I took a look at some of those other books.

WOW! Avengers Assemble V1 seems great value and with amazing content and i think I will definitely be picking it up!

There a lot of good trades out for Avengers at the moment. I'd recommend:

Essential Avengers 1-5 - This covers all of the early stuff, which is a good heads up on the series.

Kree/Skrull War - One of the defining Avengers stories, and the high point of Thomas' run.

Avengers-Defenders War - A fun hero vs. hero story

Celestial Madonna - One of the first big metaphysical stories in comics. This was a huge epic that was spread out over 20 issues. Great stuff. Also, Kang is featured prominently.

The Korvac Saga - Another Avengers epic, and one of the best Avengers stories from the 70's.

Under Siege - Personally, this is my absolute favourite Avengers story. Full of emotion, great battle, excellent character moments, and brilliant art by the classic Buscema/Palmer team. Even if the art doesn't appeal to you, it's still worth it for the story alone.

The Avengers Assemble HC's - These seem to be covering all of the Busiek/Perez stuff, all of which is essential reading.

Avengers Forever - This is an amazing story that ties together all of Avengers continuity. However, it's probably good to have some grounding in that continuity before you read the book.

As for solo stuff, you can't go past the following:

Essential Thor, Iron Man, Cap - Once again, cheap reprints that provide a good heads up on the series/characters

Walt Simonson Visionaries: Thor - Absolutely essential reading for any comic fan. Simonson's run on Thor is one of the defining 80's comics. Great stuff.

Captain America current series - Brubaker is doing wonders for Cap at the moment. Definitely pick this up.

IM: Demon in a Bottle - A real defining storyline for IM. This is the beginning of Tony's alcoholism problems.

IM: Armour Wars - I don't know if this is still in print, but if you can find a copy, get it. A top story.
